IEEE Internet Computing is here to help computer scientists and engineers use the ever-expanding resources of the Internet. IC and IC Online publish the latest developments in Internet-based applications and supporting technologies and address the Internet's widening impact on engineering practice and society. The magazine targets the designers and developers of Internet-based applications and leading edge technologies -- the early adopters who develop tools for the web and the high-end users who want to use tools that exist on the web. IC's content reaches over 20,000 subscribers internationally, comprising leading researchers, developers and engineers (76% industry, 24% government/academia).

Please note:
All submissions must be 5,000 words or less, including full text, abstract, keywords, bibliography, biographies, and 250 words for each figure and table.
Overlength manuscripts will be rejected without review, pending resubmission.

Detailed information on uploading manuscripts is available here. The system requires authors to proof their files before completing the uploading process.
Login Instructions
Everyone who submits a manuscript must have a Manuscript Central account.
If you have previously volunteered in any capacity for the IEEE Computer Society, Manuscript Central has emailed or will email you a login and password. On your first visit here, click on CHECK FOR EXISTING ACCOUNT. Please try to avoid creating a duplicate account.
If you have not volunteered with the IEEE Computer Society or have not received a new-user email, then you should click on CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT. The bolded fields must be completed to continue the process.
If authors anticipate the need to be notified at two email addresses, please include the second email address (CC). You may mark this email address active or inactive as needed.
If you have technical difficulties with your account, please contact Support by clicking the Get Help Now button in the upper right corner of the screen.
Submissions
We do not allow submission to more than one publication at one time. If we determine that a manuscript has been submitted to another publication before IEEE Internet Computing's review process is completed, the manuscript will automatically be rejected.
Duplicate Submissions
We do not accept duplicate submissions of manuscripts. Authors should not attempt to enter or upload modified versions of a manuscript already in the system as a new submission.
Identical submissions will be immediately rejected.
Preliminary/Conference Version(s)
If any portion of an author's submission has appeared or will appear in a conference proceedings, the author should include a copy of the previously published manuscript along with the IEEE Internet Computing submission and a summary of changes identifying the differences between the two.
Editors and reviewers are required to check the submitted manuscript to determine whether a sufficient amount of new material has been added to warrant publication in IEEE Internet Computing. New results are encouraged, but not required. However, the submission should contain expansions of key ideas, examples, and so on.
If authors have questions regarding this policy, they should contact the Publications Coordinator.
File Types
We accept plain text, Word, LaTeX, PostScript, and PDF files. Manuscript Central will convert any uploaded file into a PDF.
Due to our system's size limitations on individual files, authors should not attempt to upload files larger than 20 Mbytes.
Contact Information
The system requires authors to submit their names and email addresses before advancing in Manuscript Central. Email is our primary means of communication, so you should verify that all information is correct. You should also update this field if any changes occur to the email address of the corresponding author and/or the contributing authors.
Contributing Authors
Authors should list who contributed to the writing of the manuscript. If necessary, you can change the list of contributing authors when uploading a revised version. For articles with more than one author, please designate one person as the contact point with the Publications Coordinator.
Abstract
The abstract should be no more than 150 words and should describe the manuscript's overall focus.
Illustrations
All illustrations must be cited in the text, numbered, and have descriptive captions. Graphs should show only the coordinated axes (or at most the major grid lines) to avoid dense, hard-to-read illustrations. We accept illustrations in tif, eps, and jpg formats. Please provide high-quality, high-resolution files for best results. We often redraw line art to conform with other drawings in the magazine; submitted drawings should be clear and complete. Detailed graphics guidelines are available here. If an article is accepted, authors should be prepared to submit separate files for each figure. Authors are responsible for securing permission to use any copyrighted figures.
Keywords/Taxonomy
Keywords should closely reflect the topic and optimally characterize the manuscript. IEEE Internet Computing provides keywords that are taken from the ACM taxonomy. (This is an extended version of the ACM Computing Classification System Copyright ©2003 ACM, used with permission.)
We recommend that authors enter a minimum of two keywords when uploading their manuscripts. Expert reviewers in the topic area will be linked to the manuscript by keywords.
Manuscript Numbers
A unique tracking number will be assigned to the manscript and should be used when corresponding with the Publications Coordinator.
Text-Formatting Requirements
The following sections describe IC's requirements for both the form and content of all manuscripts. Please review them carefully prior to uploading your submissions.
Type of Manuscript
IEEE Internet Computing publishes a variety of types of articles. For full peer review, submissions fall into three general categories:
· Regular manuscripts are those that fit within the scope of the magazine but are not submitted for a special issue.
· Special issue manuscripts cover a specific topic scheduled on our editorial calendar. Be sure to select the appropriate issue (manuscript type) when uploading your manuscript.
· Track features (Currently Standards and Service-Oriented Computing) present ongoing coverage of themes over the course of the year.
The magazine also accepts submissions to certain departments, which are handled separately from Manuscript Central. For information on these, please see our department author guidelines.
Text
IEEE Internet Computing seeks articles on the use and development of applications and technologies that let practitioners leverage the infrastructure and services found on the Internet. Our focus is on engineering and applying the Internet toolset to support individual engineers, as well as groups in collaborative and coordinated work.
Articles should be understandable to a broad audience of science and engineering professionals and students. The writing should be down to earth, practical, and original. Authors should avoid too much focus on theory, mathematics, jargon, and abstract concepts. They should not assume that the audience will have specialized experience in a particular subfield. If acronyms must be used, each one should be defined on its first appearance.
Any article that exceeds the 5,000-word limit will be rejected automatically without going through the review process. Each manuscript should have a title page containing the submission's title and the names, affiliations, and contact information for all coauthors.
Suitable topics include (but are not limited to) Internet-based engineering issues such as:
· scalability
· security and trust
· distributed and collaborative development
· e-commerce technologies
· network protocols
· programming technologies (Corba, Java, middleware, etc.)
· engineering ontologies
· storage area networks
· quality of service
· application architectures
· agent technologies
· and wireless and mobile networking
Relevance.
In all cases, submissions should be relevant to the typical professional subscriber of IC and should illustrate the applicability or effect of a specific Internet-based technology. Fielded, tested applications with hard results are preferred. Prototypes must at least include test results.
Regardless of the state of development, all papers should make clear:
· the reuseable scientific and engineering principles that distinguish the technology and
· the reason the technology is worth pursuing.
Papers should also include a complete "related works" section comparing the described work to alternative approaches and the state-of-the-art.
References.
Manuscripts should include no more than 15 references (10 references in sidebars, counted separately from the main text), numbered in the order in which they appear, and should be limited to material that the public can easily access.
IC does not accept "blanket" citations for general statements, but authors should properly reference concepts, quotations, tables, and artwork taken from other sources. Citations must include full publication information for articles, this means listing all authors, the article name, the publication's full name, the volume, issue number or month, year of publication, and the pages cited. For conference proceedings, we need the title of the article and the proceedings, the name of the proceedings publisher (not the conference's location), the year of publication, and the pages cited.
URLs.
Authors may include up to 15 non-reference URLs for related sites that would be of interest to readers.
Code.
IC encourages the inclusion of example code as well as results data. At the editors' discretion, this may be excerpted in the magazine with a pointer to the remainder, which will be published at the magazine's Web site.
Style
IEEE Internet Computing is a magazine, not a journal. Articles should use active voice instead of passive voice ("We discovered ..." rather than "It was discovered ..."). The three-paragraph introduction should describe:
· the Internet-related problem space,
· the proposed solution that the article presents, and
· they way the article progresses (while avoiding "signposting")
Our staff editors will work with authors to prepare the article to meet our style requirements.
Review Process
Once authors receive a confirmation letter from Manuscript Central, the Publications Coordinator will verify that the manuscript meets IEEE Internet Computing's word-length requirements and forward it to the Editor in Chief for an initial review. If the Editor in Chief finds the manuscript to be within magazine's scope, it will be assigned to an Editor.
We solicit peer reviews from individuals both inside and outside the manuscript's topic area. Reviews are used as the basis for acceptance and content revisions, but the Editor in Chief makes the final decision regarding publication.
Authors can log in to Manuscript Central and check their manuscript's status anytime during the process. Normally, they will receive a final decision within four to six months.
Supplemental Material
Supplemental material includes Web-only addenda and extra graphics in addition to the completed manuscript. We prefer that authors submit this type of material after disscussion with IEEE Internet Computing's Publications Coordinator.
Accepted Manuscripts
Authors cannot submit materials for accepted articles through Manuscript Central. Their acceptance letter has more information. If they have questions, authors should contact the Publications Coordinator.
Editing.
After an article is accepted for publication, it will be edited by IC staff editors. The process generally begins about eight to 10 weeks before publication and takes two to three weeks. As a magazine, IC has a much more substantial editing process than most journals. Because IC's readership is broader, articles need to present a streamlined story that our busy readers will be inclined to take the time for.
The full process includes:
· copy editing (grammar, punctuation, and capitalization)
· style editing (direct narrative using strong, active verbs to move the story forward), and
· content editing (flow, clarity, and organization).
Depending on the article's length and clarity, the editing process sometimes includes significant revision. The process is iterative to ensure technical accuracy, but it is designed to increase every article's appeal and to ensure that all usage conforms to the magazine's style.
Copyright
We assume that articles submitted to us are for our exclusive use and will be published under the IEEE CS copyright. At least one author must sign a release form transferring copyright to the IEEE (excepting certain key rights retained by the authors).
