Instructions to Authors
Submission The Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System publishes original research reports, case studies, reviews, letters, and news covering every topic of scientific or clinical relevance to the peripheral nervous system. All manuscripts are subject to peer review by members of the Editorial Board or other experts chosen by them.
JPNS is now accepting manuscripts electronically via an online submission site, Manuscript Central. The use of an online submission and peer review site will speed the time to decisions, enable immediate distribution and allow authors to track their own manuscripts. To access this system for submission and review, go directly to http://jpns.manuscriptcentral.com. Instructions for submitting your manuscript can be found on the site.
Authors will be required to assign copyright in their papers. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for publication unless copyright has been assigned. An appropriate copyright assignment form can be found at the following address: JPNS Copyright Assignment Form.
Please submit your manuscript via Manuscript Central, or send one original and three copies of the manuscript, four original sets of illustrations, and a disk that matches the text exactly to:
Robert R. Myers, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System University of California, San Diego School of Medicine Anesthesiology Research (0629) Medical Teaching Facility, Room 445 9500 Gilman Drive La Jolla, CA 92093-0629 Phone: (858) 534-3865. Fax: (858) 534-1445. E-mail: JPNS@ucsd.edu
Submission of the manuscript is taken as evidence that the authors have no ethical or financial conflict of interest in publishing the study. If animal or human subjects are used, a statement must be given explicitly in the text that indicates institutional approval of the study, or an equivalent statement of adherence to acceptable procedures if there is not a formal institutional policy for approval. Submission also is taken as evidence that no portion of the text or figures has been copyrighted unless previous permission of the original source has been provided to the Editor. Acceptance for publication of an article implies the transfer of copyright to the Peripheral Nerve Society, except for Government employees where other restrictions may apply.
Manuscript Preparation Manuscripts should be written in English with consistent spelling according to English or American usage. The text should contain sufficiently detailed information to enable the experiments to be reproduced. Commonly accepted abbreviations may be used but they must be defined where they first appear. Système International (SI) units should be used consistently and separated by a space after the numerical value (e.g., 27 ml). Text should be approximately 12 points in size and lines should be double spaced. Do not justify text to the right margin. Begin each of the following sections on a separate page: Title page; Abstract and Key words; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgments; References; Table Legends; Figure Legends.
Title Page The title page should include:
- Manuscript title in lower case type with only first letter of first word capitalized
- First name, middle initial(s) and surname of authors without degrees; use superscript numbers after surnames to form subgroups.
- Name and address of authors' departments and/or institutions; use corresponding superscript numbers before different institutions to identify different author affiliations.
- Running headline of not more than 50 characters.
- Address of Corresponding author in the form: Corresponding author: Name, Address, Telephone number, Fax number, Email address. Indicate if you do not want all of this information printed.
Abstract and Key words This page is to contain the Abstract and Key words. The abstract should not exceed 250 words, and there should be up to 5 key words listed on a separate line following the abstract.
Body of Manuscript Case Reports and Reviews can have loose structure but should be organized by key headings. Original Reports should have the traditional structural form outlined above. Headings and subheadings should be in lowercase bold letters, with only the first letter capitalized except for ÒMethods and Materials?where both are capitalized. Tertiary headings should be in lower case italics with only the first letter capitalized. All paragraphs should begin with an indentation. References should be italicized and listed chronologically in parentheses by the author and year of publication as in these examples: (Heumann, et al., 1987; Wood and Anderton, 1989; Dahlin, 1995) for 3 or more authors, two authors, or single author, respectively.
References References should be listed alphabetically by the last name of the first author according to the style illustrated below. List all authors and append "a, b, c..." after the year if the same authors have several listed publications in the same year.
Journal Article: Solders G, Nennesmo I, Ernerudh J, Cruz M, Vrethem M (1999). Lymphocytes in sural nerve biopsies from patients with plasma cell dyscrasia and polyneuropathy. J Periph Nerv Sys 4: 91-98.

Illustrations Illustrations are to be provided in clear black/white glossy prints. Color illustrations can only be reproduced when the author will bear the costs. In the text the figures should be referred to by Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. Their approximate place should be indicated on the manuscript. On the sheet of Figure Legends the word Òfigure?should be written in full, i.e., Figure 1.
Tables Identify the tables by number and provide legends that clearly identify the symbols and data listed.
Reprints The publisher will send a reprint order form and a copyright release form with the proofs to the corresponding author.
Electronic Submission A disk copy of the manuscript must accompany the printed copy and exactly match the text. Disks may be either IBM or Macintosh compatible. Manuscripts should be prepared preferably using a recent version of Microsoft Word or Office, or WordPerfect; alternatively, manuscripts may be saved on disk in ASCII format. Please be sure to indicate platform, software name and version number for all disks submitted (e.g., Microsoft Office 98 for Macintosh). Make sure the file is double-spaced and has no hard returns at the end of lines. Ragged right-hand margins are required. Please be sure to keep a back-up copy of the file for reference, as the original disk will not be returned.
