About the journal

Journal of Mammary Gland Biology and Neoplasia provides researchers within and outside the field of mammary gland biology with an integrated source of information derived from studies of the development, function, and pathology of the mammary gland. This quarterly journal offers comprehensive analyses of all aspects of the field, considering the fundamental biology and pathology of the mammary gland including, but not restricted to mammary development, the biology of breast cancer, lactation, milk proteins, bioactive agents in milk, hormonal regulation, growth factors, signal transduction, nutrition, and genetics. Each outstanding issue, guest edited by prominent authorities in the field, contains a series of minireviews encompassing a single topic. Researchers in the field of mammary gland biology, dairy scientists, and breast cancer researchers, as well as cell biologists, medical scientists, oncologists, nutritionists, pediatricians, and obstetricians will benefit from this quarterly.

Each journal issue comprises papers on an integrated theme solicited by invitation only. The journal does not accept unsolicited manuscripts.
  2. Copyright. Submission is representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Plenum Publishing Corporation will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
  3. Format of manuscript. Type double-spaced, and submit the original and three copies (including copies of all illustrations and table). Type on one side only of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper with 1 1/2 inch margins all around.
  4. Order of elements. Order the elements comprising the manuscript as follows: title page, abstract, key words, text, appendix, acknowledgments, references, tables and figure-caption list.
  5. Title page. A title page is to be provided and should include the title of the article, author‘s name with full first name (no degrees), author‘s affiliation, and suggested running head. The affiliation should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city and state (or nation) and should be typed as a footnote to the author‘s name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof. For office purposes, the title page should include the name and complete mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the one author designated to review proofs. The number of words comprising the text, references and figure legends as determined by the word processing program should also be placed on the title page.
  6. Abstract. An abstract, preferably no longer than 150 words, is to be provided as the second page.
  7. Keywords. A list of 4-6 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.
  8. Abbreviations. All abbreviations used in the text should be placed in a list with the following format: ECM, extracellular matrix; MEC, mammary epithelial cell; etc.
  9. Acknowledgments. All acknowledgments (including those for grant and financial support) should be typed in one paragraph on a separate page that directly precedes the references section.
  10. Illustrations. Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals in the order in which they are cited in the text. The captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast. Drawings should be prepared with India Ink, if hand drawn, and with lines and characters of sufficient width and size to be clearly visible on reduction to single column width. Either original drawings or good-quality photographic prints are acceptable. Artwork for each figure should be provided on a separate sheet of paper. Identify figures on the back with the author‘s name and the number of the illustration. Include an indication of "top," if not obvious. Special arrangements can be made for color reproduction of figures. Note that all costs for color must be paid by the author.
  11. Tables. Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to be number in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. Center the title above the table and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table.
  12. References. References should be typed double-spaced at the end of the paper and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are cited in the text. Cite in the text by the appropriate Arabic numeral enclosed in parenthesis on the baseline. If and when authors?names are used in the text together with reference citation, where there are three or more authors, only the first author‘s name is given followed by et al. References should include (in this order): initials and last names of all authors, year published, title of article, name of publication, volume number, and inclusive pages. The style and punctuation of the references should conform to the following examples:

    Journal article
    1. J.L. Gabrielson, P. Johansson, U.Bondesson, and L.K. Paalzow. (1985). Analysis of methadone disposition in the pregnant rat by means of physiological flow model. J. Pharmacokin. Biopharm. 13:355-372.

References to unpublished personal communications should be avoided. The reference list should not be exhaustive, but should cover the field adequately.
  13. Footnotes.Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.
  14. After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor‘s Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information ?software, journal name, and first author‘s last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor‘s Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard-copy manuscript.
