Instructions to Authors

MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts containing new material are accepted for consideration for publication with the provision that they are submitted solely to the Journal of Investigative Medicine and that no part of the material has been submitted to any other publication. Authors should prepare the manuscript in Microsoft Word arranging the material in the following order: title page, abstract, text, acknowledgment, references, figure legends, and tables. Review articles do not require an abstract. The authors should include a cover letter signed by all authors indicating the corresponding author (with address, fax and telephone numbers, and e-mail address) responsible for receiving all correspondence regarding the manuscript. Credit for authorship requires substantial contributions to (a) conception and design, or analysis and interpretation of data; and (b) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content. Authors must address any situation regarding possible conflict of interest (see Guidelines for Conflict of Interest in the AFCR Newsletter, Vol 2, No 2, Mar 1990) in their cover letter.

Manuscripts may be submitted as an e-mail attachment in Word or as a PDF file (including all illustrations) or on a high-density diskette or CD-ROM (R/W). Also, authors should provide one hard copy of their manscript.

TITLE PAGE

The title page should include title of manuscript; author(s); laboratory or institution with city and state; acknowledgement of grant support; name, address and telephone number of grant support; and name, address, fax and telephone numbers, and e-mail address of the corresponding author. An abbreviated title of no more than 40 characters should be included to be used as a running foot. The title page should provide complete information (meeting title, city, state, country, and dates) if the paper was presented at a scientific meeting.

ABSTRACT AND KEY WORDS

For original investigations prepare an abstract of no more than 250 words labeled (a) Background, (b) Methods, (c) Results, and (d) Conclusion. Below the abstract provide 3 key words or short phrases for indexing purposes. Terms from the Medical Subject Headings in Index Medicus should be used.

REFERENCES AND UNITS OF MEASURE

References should be prepared according to the Decker House Style for references, which can be accessed at the following Web site: . It is preferred that authors do not use a reference manager when preparing references. Authors should use the International System of Units for all units of measure.

TABLES

Tables should be prepared in Excel and provided with an arabic number and title. Avoid excessive use of horizontal lines. Do not use vertical lines. Tables cannot be used if they are in PowerPoint.

ILLUSTRATIONS

Illustrations should be submitted in an electronic format. Charts and line drawings should be prepared electronically using the program Adobe Illustrator and saved as EPS. Medical illustrations should be prepared using Adobe Photoshop and saved as TIFF at a minimum of 300 dots per inch (dpi). Decker recommends Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop as they provide quality results and are compatible with Decker¡¯s publishing requirements. Photographs should be taken using a high-quality digital camera and saved as TIFF at a minimum of 1600 x 1200 pixels, which would provide a 300 dpi image at a minimum of 5 inches in width. All color images should be saved as CMYK. If using illustrations that have not been prepared electronically, authors should scan images according to the following recommendations: Color and greyscale digital images should be scanned at a minimum of 300 dpi at a minimum width of 5 inches and saved in TIFF or EPS. Line art should be scanned at a minimum of 1200 dpi at a minimum width of 5 inches and saved as a BMP. We cannot accept images that are JPEG or RGB. Also, we cannot accept images produced in PowerPoint or Excel. If possible, authors should provide proofs of electronic images for color and detail verification. Should it be impossible to provide illustrations electronically, we ask that you submit them as finished professional artwork, photographs as glossy. All figures should be labeled clearly and indicate which side is the top.

PAGE CHARGES

A fee of $90 will be charged for each printed page. There are no additional charges for black and white photographs or figures, but if color is desired, a fee of $350 per page is assessed. Additional color photos or figures may be added to that page for a fee of $80 per additional photograph/figure. Every new page using color results in the $350 per page charge.
