Instructions to Authors
Blood Cells, Molecules, & Diseases (BCMD) publishes original articles and reviews in the broad area of hematology, including both basic and clinical studies and encompassing areas such as hemostasis, thrombosis, immunology, metabolism, genetics, molecular biology, therapy, and morphology.
SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Manuscripts must be written in English and must be submitted through one of the contributing editors. There are no submission fees or page charges. Authors should contact one of the contributing editors to ascertain whether the editor is in a position to consider the paper. It is useful to do this by FAX, including the abstract so that the editor is apprised of the subject matter of the paper. Because all papers will be transmitted (as well as set into print) electronically, all manuscripts must be submitted on disk by mail and should be accompanied by three printed copies. Please include the name of the programs used to produce the manuscript and figure(s) and the type of computer platform used.
Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if the manuscript is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher. The Copyright Transfer Agreement should be signed by the appropriate person.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions to reprint previously published figures, tables, and other material.
Electronic Transmission of Accepted Manuscripts Authors must transmit the text and art of the manuscript in electronic form, via either computer disk, e-mail, or FTP (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc), after all revisions have been incorporated and the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Submission as an e-mail attachment to the contributing editor is acceptable provided that all files are included in a single archive the size of which does not exceed 2 megabytes. Hard-copy printouts of the art must also be supplied.
Only light redaction of submitted articles will be performed to facilitate immediate distribution. If the references or other parts of the paper are not in the correct format or if the paper is not written in proper English, the paper will be returned to the author for correction.
Each paper will be converted into a form (PDF) that, with appropriate software, can be viewed directly on the computer screen appearing as a journal article (not as typescript) and can be printed out in that form. A copy of the paper will be e-mailed or faxed to the author, who will have 48 hours to proofcheck the pages and return corrections. The corrected article will be distributed over the Internet to subscribers shortly thereafter. Thus, the average paper will be published approximately 3-4 weeks after acceptance. The printed edition will be identical to that distributed electronically, and no alterations will be permitted. The printed copy of the paper will appear on an average of 10 weeks after acceptance. The exact interval will depend upon when it is received in the publication cycle. However, the publication date indicated on each paper will be the date that it was published on the Internet.
Preparation of Manuscript Manuscripts should be limited to the approximate range of 1000 to 10,000 words. With figures, tables, and references appropriate to the subject matter, articles will, in general, not be longer than 20 journal pages. Each article will usually contain the following sections and be organized as follows: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, and Acknowledgments. The author's reprint address should be provided.
References References should be numbered sequentially as they appear in the text. Only articles that have been published or are in press should be included in the references. Unpublished results or personal communications should be cited as such in the text. Please note the following examples:
Figures Figures may be submitted either digitally or as a hard copy. Digital figures must be in either TIFF or EPS format and be accompanied by at least a low-quality printout. If digital files are not sent, the hard copy must be of high quality and suitable for scanning. Please refer to http://authors.elsevier.com/ArtworkInstructions.html?dc=AI1 for detailed instrutions on preparing electronic artwork. Tables and figures should be designated by Arabic numbers. Color figures are encouraged and will be included without additional charge in the electronic edition of the journal, but will be published as black-and-white versions in the printed journal, unless the author pays for the cost of color reproductions. In addition, one color plate wil be published free of charge in each article, provided that color is deemed necessary by the editor. If the author wishes the printed edition to contain black-and-white versions of color figures, the black-and-white figures should be submitted with the color version. Mounted color figures must be submitted on paper or flexible board due to the nature of the reproduction process.
