Optical Fiber Technology
|
Innovations in optical fiber technology are revolutionizing world communications. Newly developed fiber amplifiers allow for direct transmission of high-speed signals over transcontinental distances without the need for electronic regeneration. Optical fibers find new applications in data processing. The impact of fiber materials, devices, and systems on communications in the coming decades will create an abundance of primary literature and the need for up-to-date reviews. |

Optical Fiber Technology: Materials, Devices, and Systems is a new cutting-edge journal designed to fill a need in this rapidly evolving field for speedy publication of regular length papers. Both theoretical and experimental papers on fiber materials, devices, and system performance evaluation and measurements are eligible, with emphasis on practical applications.
Instructions to Authors
Optical Fiber Technology focuses on practical and novel applications of optical fibers in communication systems. Recently developed fiber amplifiers allow the direct transmission of high-speed digital signals over transcontinental distances without the need for electronic regeneration, and there are many new applications for optical fibers in all-optical data processing. This journal provides both technical and tutorial information for engineers and researchers in the field of optical fiber technology, both in industry and in academia.
Theoretical and experimental work representing original research on fiber materials, devices, and systems, with emphasis on practical applications, can be submitted to the journal as contributed papers. Each journal will also include invited review papers. Topics and applications covered by both types of papers include, but are not limited to:
- Optical fiber components
- New fiber materials and designs
- Fiber lasers and amplifiers
- Fiber switching, memory, and signal processing
- Optical solitons in fibers
- Fiber nonlinearities and countermeasures
- Long-haul transmission systems
- Fiber local area networks
- Fiber sensors and instrumentation
Submission of manuscripts. Manuscripts should be written in clear, concise, and grammatical English and should be submitted in quadruplicate, i.e., one original with a set of original figures and three good-quality photocopies, directly to:
Optical Fiber Technology Editorial Office 525 B Street, Suite 1900 San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA Telephone: (619) 699-6469 Fax: (619) 699-6801 E-mail: oft@elsevier.com
Do not fax or mail manuscripts to the Editors. Peer reviewers evaluate the quality of the manuscript, its originality, and its suitability for the journal. The structure of the refereeing process ensures the anonymity of the reviewers. Photocopies of halftone artwork must show sufficient detail to be used for the review process. In the case of rejected manuscripts, only one copy of the manuscript will be returned to the author.
Electronic files. Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper, including all artwork, with the final version of their manuscript either on disk or via ftp (ftp.elsevier.com, with username anon and password essd4acc). The electronic copy should match the hard copy exactly. The manuscript will be edited accordingly to the style of the journal, and the proofs must be read carefully by the author.
Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published (unless under the form of short abstracts or letters), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out, and that all clearances have been received by the author by the time a manuscript is submitted for publication. It is further understood that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation; written authorization may be required at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. Articles and any other material published in Optical Fiber Technology represent the opinions of the authors and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editors or the Publisher.
Copyright and Permissions. Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see http://authors.elsevier.com). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.
If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.
Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following style rules. Deviation from these rules causes publication delays.
Form of manuscript. Submit word-processed manuscripts in quadruplicate, including the original copy, double-spaced (point size 12, vertical spacing 24), on one side of good-quality 8.5 x 11-in. or A4 white paper. Number all pages consecutively, including references, footnotes, tables, and figure captions.
Page 1 should contain (1) the article title, author(s) names(s), and complete affiliations(s) and (2) an abstract (about 150 words) that is a brief but informative summary of the contents, claims, and conclusions of the paper. The abstract should be intelligible to a nonspecialist in the field and should avoid specialized terms and abbreviations or symbols that require definition. Beneath the abstract include the name, complete mailing address, and telephone, fax, and electronic mail contacts of the author to whom proofs should be sent. At the bottom of page 1 place any footnotes to the title. Avoid footnotes within the text; if necessary, identify them by superscript Arabic numerals in order of appearance and type them double-spaced together on a separate page.
References. Include only published or in-press articles; cite personal communications or unpublished results as such within the text. Arrange references in the order mentioned in the text and cite by Arabic numbers between brackets: [1], [1,2], [1. Theorem 5.4], etc. Give text references in the form "As Jones [31] showed..." rather then "As [31] showed...". Abbreviate the names of journals according to the latest Science Citation Index. When in doubt about employing abbreviations, use clarity as a guide. For unpublished lectures or symposia, include the title of the paper, the full name of the sponsoring society, and the date. Note the reference styles in the following examples:
[1] E. Simova, I. Powell, C. P. Grover, Biased-shifted low-coherence interferometry for measuring polarization mode dispersion (PMD), Opt. Fiber Technol. 8 (2002) 4-23.

Tables. Number tables consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page, with a short descriptive title directly above the table and any footnotes (cited by superscript lowercase letters) directly below the table.
Figures and diagrams. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals and mention in order in the text. A high-quality version of each figure, suitable for direct photographic reproduction in the published paper, must be supplied. Lettering on the figures should be of professional quality and should be large enough to be legible after reduction to fit the journal page. A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our Web site at http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork. Illustrations in color can be accepted only if the authors defray the cost. To minimize the costs to the author, multiple color figures may appear out of numerical sequence.
Equations. Type all equations and place the numbers for displayed formulas in parentheses at the right margin. References to equations should use the form "Eq. (3)" or simply "(3)."
Biographies. The manuscript should include a small photograph and a brief professional biography of approximately 100 words for each author. The author's name must be printed in soft pencil on the back of each photograph. The biography should consist of where and when the author's degrees were received, where and in what position the author is currently, what the author's research interests are, and whatever other information about the author's professional career the author wishes to include.
Proofs. Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Authors will be charged for alterations in excess of 10% of the original composition cost.
Author inquiries. For inquiries relating to the submission of articles (including electronic submission where available) please visit the Elsevier Author Gateway at http://authors.elsevier.com. The Author Gateway also provides the facility to track accepted articles and set up e-mail alerts to inform you of when an article's status has changed, as well as detailed artwork guidelines, copyright information, frequently asked questions, and more. Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided after registration of an article for publication.
