About the journal

Aims and scope

The journal publishes articles on the main issues of meteorology, hydrology, oceanology, agrometeorology, climate changes, environmental pollution, and active transformation of meteorological processes and phenomena. In addition, the journal publishes monthly weather reports, reviews of anomalous meteorological phenomena, environmental pollution, and the status of the ozone layer.

Published under the auspices of the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, and edited by Academician Yu. A. Izrael, well-known internationally for his work in radioactive fallout, this journal provides comprehensive coverage of meteorological and hydrological research throughout the Former Soviet Union. The major topics covered are:

  • Weather forecasting, synoptic predictions
  • Climate changes, global and regional, assessment and prediction
  • Weather modification
  • Ocean hydrodynamics, sea-level fluctuations
  • Wind patterns, storms and hurricanes, space-time variability, seasonal air movements
  • Agrometeorological conditions and crop yields
  • Environmental pollution scales and impacts, assessment and forecast
  • Hydrometeorological observation instruments
  • Atmospheric turbulence and flight safety
  • Ionosphere studies
  • Geomagnetic activity
  • Arctic and antarctic research
  • River runoff series, groundwater table
  • Satellite flood mapping
  • Ozone layer and greenhouse gases
  •
Included in the journal's coverage are studies on such critical topics as global warming and the continuing aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. Articles stem from major institutes, observatories and a network of ROSGIDROMET universities, where much of the research is carried out in the framework of international cooperation and implementation of international programs developed by WMO, UNEP, UNESCO and other international organizations.
