Instructions to Authors

Process Safety Progress publishes papers that deliver practical process safety information for engineering professionals in the CPI, with a focus on chemical and hydrocarbon process safety, loss prevention and health. It regularly addresses such topics as safety evaluation, risk assessment, process hazards evaluation, ammonia plant safety, fire and explosion analysis, vapor cloud explosion analysis, hazardous chemicals management, hazardous leaks prevention, and OSHA and EPA regulatory compliance.

Authors are encouraged to submit papers that have not been presented at an AIChE meeting. These manuscripts are considered equally with papers presented at AIChE meetings.

Process Safety Progress articles are typically no longer than 16 manuscript pages (double-spaced), including tables and figures. Generally, articles are published in order of acceptance (with some exceptions for balance) and can be expected to appear in print within six to nine months of acceptance (based on the current backlog). All submissions are first reviewed by the editor. Those papers being considered for acceptance go on to a review by one or more members of the periodical's Editorial Review Board and/or other peer reviewers.

All authors should read the AIChE Code of Ethics (Revised January 17, 2003.)

Submitting Papers

Papers should be sent to:

Editor, Process Safety Progress
c/o AIChE Technical Publications
AIChE
3 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5991

Three copies of the manuscript, complete with figures, need to be sent to the editor. A decision regarding publication normally can be expected within two months and will come directly from the editor. If accepted, the editor will send a letter to the author asking that he/she send one copy of his/her paper and clear black and white print-outs of all figures to Beth Shery Sisk, associate editor, at the New York office (see below for contact information). The manuscript must also be submitted as a word processing file, either on disk, or via e-mail. The preferred word processing format is Microsoft Word, but, with the exception of WordPerfect, the staff can also handle a variety of other Macintosh and Windows® formats. If you're submitting a file in a program other than Word, be sure to note on the disk and/or on your hard copy the program in which it was created. Also include a copy of the completed copyright transfer form (see below for more information about this form).

Graphics should be submitted as TIFFs, JPEGs, or EPS files. If at all possible, do not use color figures, as the color will be stripped out and it's often difficult to read variations in shades of gray. All figures should be submitted in a separate file or files. Do not embed graphics within the text. They must be stripped out before the file can be imported into the page layout program, and this can cause extensive delays.

All materials should be directed to:

Beth Shery Sisk, Associate Editor, Process Safety Progress
AIChE, 3 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5991.
Tel: (212) 591-7845 Fax: (212) 591-8883

E-mail: beths@aiche.org

Simultaneously, a copy of the paper and copyright form should be sent to the Editor. Even if the file is e-mailed to the New York office, a letter acknowledging its submission must still be sent to the Editor.

Format

Papers need not follow any specific format, but should be written in a manner designed to best illustrate the material being presented. Please use headings and subheadings, as this type of organization simplifies things for the reader. A short review of the literature, with appropriate references, should also be included. Remember to define all acronyms and any terms that might not be commonly known outside of your area of technical specialization.

Abstracts

Each paper should include an abstract of 100-200 words, offering a brief account of the contents, conclusions, and relevance of the findings of the paper. The abstract should not be just a repeat to the opening introductory paragraphs of the paper. Emphasize what the readers will gain from reading your paper.

Literature Citation

Any literature directly referenced within the text of the paper or in any tables or figures must be notated within brackets and a full citation provided. Citations must be listed in the order in which they appear in the article, and should be as detailed as possible. For information on style and formats for citations, please read the Process Safety Progress Reference Style Guide.

Copyright and Permissions

The author will also be asked to complete and return a copyright transfer form to the New York office. No paper can be published without a signed copy of this form. For jointly authored papers, only one signature is required, but all authors must be advised of and consent to the terms of this form. All materials within the paper, including tables and figures, should be the original, unpublished work of the authors. If a paper uses figures or other materials from published sources, it is the responsibility of the author(s) to get written permission to use it from the person or publisher who holds the copyright. The permission statement must be submitted to the New York office with the manuscript. E-mail is sufficient as long as it contains the name and contact information for the person who authorized its use.

The paper's principal author will be faxed a copy of the edited, formatted article about a month before publication, and asked to review it within a set time-frame (generally 1 to 2 weeks) and return your comments/suggestions/corrections promptly. Even if there are corrections, you still must send an acknowledgement to the New York office that you reviewed the manuscript and approve of it as submitted.

Conclusion

Attention to the details listed above will expedite editing and printing and increase the readability of your paper in Process Safety Progress.
