About the journal

The Journal of Mammalian Evolution is a multidisciplinary forum devoted to studies on the comparative morphology, molecular biology, paleobiology, genetics, developmental and reproductive biology, biogeography, systematics, ethology and ecology, and population dynamics of mammals and the ways that these diverse data can be analyzed for the reconstruction of mammalian evolution. The journal publishes high-quality peer-reviewed original articles and reviews derived from both laboratory and field studies. The journal facilitates communication among international researchers in the many fields that contribute to our understanding of mammalian evolutionary biology.

Journal of Mammalian Evolution is the official journal of the Society for the Study of Mammalian Evolution.

Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission
Springer now requires authors, editors and reviewers of Journal of Mammalian Evolution to use our fully web−enabled online manuscript submission and review system, Editorial Manager. Editorial Manager has led to a reduction in the time between submission and publication, and offers authors the option to track the progress of their manuscript in real time.

You may upload your manuscripts following the instructions given on the screen. This system supports a wide range of submission file formats. If you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript online, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on "CONTACT US" from the tool bar. Manuscripts should be submitted to:

Publication Policies
Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible. Please download the Copyright Transfer Statement from the journal webpage and submit it to the editorial office listed.
Manuscript Style
Order the elements comprising the manuscript as follows:

title page

abstract

key words

text

appendix

acknowledgments

references

tables

and figure−caption list

The text should be divided into the sections Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion. All acknowledgments (including those for grant and financial support) should be included as one paragraph that directly precedes the references section (Literature Cited).

Title Page

A title page is to be provided and should include

the title of the article

author's name (no degrees)

author's affiliation

and suggested running head

The affiliation should comprise

the department

institution (usually university or company)

city

and state (or nation)

and should be included as a footnote to the author's name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof.
Abstract

An abstract that clearly presents the main conclusions is to be provided, preferably no longer than 25000 words.

Key Words

A list of 4 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes.

References

List references alphabetically at the end of the paper in the section Literature Cited and refer to them in the text by name and year in parentheses. Where there are three or more authors, only the first author's name is given in the text, followed by et al. (without italics).

References should include (in this order):

last names and initials of all authors

year published

title of article

name of publication

volume number

and inclusive pages

The style and punctuation of the references should conform to that used in the journal illustrated by the following examples:

Book
Dillon LS (1981) Ultrastructure, macromolecules, and evolution, Plenum Press, New York

Contribution to a Book
Flynn LJ, Jacobs LL, and Lindsay EH (1985) Problems in muroid phylogeny: Relationship to other rodents and origin of major groups. In: WP Luckett, J-L Hartenberger (eds.) Evolutionary relationships among rodents: a multidisciplinary analysis. Plenum Press, New York. pp. 589−−616

Abbreviations of journal titles should follow those used in World List of Periodicals or Index Medicus. All references cited in the text must be included in Literature Cited. Citation in the text for the above examples is in the form (Rasmussen and Simons 1992); (Dillon 1981); and (Flynn et al. 1985).

However, references to unpublished works or to manuscripts in preparation should be made in the text only, and not be included in Literature Cited. Manuscripts accepted for publication may be cited as "in press" in the text and in Literature Cited with the full title of the article and the name of the journal or book.

Footnotes

Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.

Tables

Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. Center the title above the table, and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table.

Color art

Color can be used without charge for the electronic edition of the journal but will appear in the printed version of the journal at the author’s expense of $1150 per article.
Gene analyses
Authors submitting analyses of gene or amino acid sequences should be prepared to supply electronic versions of their sequence alignments if requested by reviewers. These are for confidential examination by reviewers only, and reviewers are requested not to use these alignments for any purpose other than the review process.

Voucher Specimens
If the reported research includes examination of voucher specimens (including tissues), the Museum catalogue number or tissue number if the former is not available must be provided. If sequences from Genbank are used, the Museum catalogue number listed on Genbank must be listed, as well as the Genbank accession number. Genbank accession numbers can be used alone, only in the event that the Museum catalogue number is not available through the Genbank record.
Page Charges
The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs
Appendices and Supplementary Material
Authors who wish to publish electronic supplementary material to their article (Excel files, images, audio/video files) are requested to submit their manuscript via our online submission system, with a note in the author comments box that supplementary material will be submitted separately by email. This email, containing the supplementary material, should be sent to the Production Editor. In the email, the title of the submitted manuscript as well as the name of the corresponding author should be given.
Guidelines for Electronically Produced illustrations for Print
General

Submit illustrations separately from the text (i.e. files should not be integrated with the text files).

Vector (line) Graphics

Vector graphics exported from a drawing program should be stored in EPS format.

Suitable drawing program: Adobe Illustrator. For simple line art the following drawing programs are also acceptable: Corel Draw, Freehand, Canvas.

No rules narrower than .25 pt.

No gray screens paler than 15% or darker than 60%

Screens meant to be differentiated from one another must differ by at least 15%

Spreadsheet/Presentation Graphics

Most presentation programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Freelance) produce data that cannot be stored in an EPS format. Therefore graphics produced by these programs cannot be used for print.

Halftone Illustrations

Black and white and color illustrations should be saved in TIFF format.

Illustrations should be created using Adobe Photoshop whenever possible.

Scans

Scanned reproductions of black and white photographs should be provided as 300ppi TIFF files.

Scanned color illustrations should be provided as TIFF files scanned at a minimum of 300 ppi with a 24-bit color depth.

Line art should be provided as TIFF files at 600 ppi.

PLEASE NOTE: Scanned illustrations may not be of sufficient quality for our purposes. Please be prepared to send original hard copies if requested, as our printers have drum scanners which allow for better reproduction of halftones.

Graphics from Videos

Separate files should be prepared for frames from a video that are to be printed in the Journal. When preparing these files you should follow the same rules as listed under Halftone Illustrations.
Guidelines for Electronically Produced illustrations for Online
Video

Quicktime (.mov) is the preferred format, but .rm, .avi, .mpg, etc. are acceptable.

No video file should be larger than 2MB. To decrease the size of your file, consider changing one or more of the following variables: frame speed, number of colors/greys, viewing size (in pixels), or compression. Video is subject to Editorial review and approval.

Springer Open Choice
