About the journal

The Journal of Combinatorial Designs is an international journal devoted to the timely publication of the most influential papers in the area of combinatorial design theory. All topics in design theory, and in which design theory has important applications, are covered, including:

  • block designs, t-designs, pairwise balanced designs and group divisible designs
  • Latin squares, quasigroups, and related algebras
  • computational methods in design theory
  • construction methods
  • applications in computer science, experimental design theory, and coding theory
  • graph decompositions, factorizations, and design-theoretic techniques in graph theory and extremal combinatorics
  • finite geometry and its relation with design theory.
  • algebraic aspects of design theory.

Instructions to Authors
Guidelines for Electronic Submission

Submission

Manuscripts for this journal and all correspondence concerning manuscripts under review should be sent to:

Journal of Combinatorial Designs
Dr. Jeffrey H. Dinitz
Department of Mathematics
University of Vermont
16 Colchester Avenue
Burlington, VT 05405
Email:jcd@uvm.edu

Electronic submission in either postscript or PDF format is encouraged. A cover letter must accompany each submission indicating the name, address, and telephone and fax numbers of the author to whom all correspondence and proofs are to be addressed. An affiliation must be supplied for each author.

Submission of a manuscript to the Editors implies that the paper has not been published, that it is not being submitted for publication elsewhere, and that, if the work reported is officially sponsored, it has been released for publication.

Copyright

No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed publication agreement, which serves as a transfer of copyright from author to publisher. A publication agreement may be obtained from the editor or the publisher. A copy of the publication agreement appears in most issues of the journal. Only original papers will be accepted and copyright in published papers will be vested in the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another publication. A copy of the agreement, executed and signed by the author, is required with each manuscript submission. (If the article is a "work made for hire," the agreement must be signed by the employer.) No manuscript can be accepted without a signed copyright transfer.

Manuscripts should be submitted in English in triplicate, one original and two copies, on standard 8 1/2 x 11 in. (21 x 28 cm) paper with 1 in. (2.5 cm) margins. All copy, including captions, footnotes, and references, must be typed double-spaced and on one side of the sheet only.

The paper must be divided into sections with appropriate section headings.

Each formal paper must be accompanied by an abstract not to exceed 200 words. It should consist of a concise statement of the main ideas contained in the paper as distinct from a summary.

Authors are cautioned to type, wherever possible, all mathematical and chemical symbols, equations, and formulas and to identify in the margin all Greek characters or unusual symbols the first time they are used (e.g., Greek kappa and the letter "kay"; Greek chi, the letter "eks" and the multiplication symbol; the number one and the letter "ell"; the number zero and the letter "oh"; etc). Underline all vector quantities and use fractional exponents in place of radical symbols.

Authors are requested to avoid footnotes to text wherever possible.

Wiley's Journal Styles and EndNote
EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style.

Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy of EndNote, click here.
Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.

References. The references should be numbered in alphabetical order, with all journals abbreviated as in Mathematical Reviews. Reference citations in text are indicated by Arabic numerals in square brackets [1], [2],.... The forms of a typical reference to a journal article [1], an article in a book or conference proceedings [2], or a book [3] appear below. Please see Mathematics into Type (American Mathematical Society) for further examples.

References to unpublished material are discouraged.

Figures.
All figures must be cited in the text, numbered, and supplied with captions. All captions should appear together on a separate sheet after the reference listing.

Figures should be professionally prepared and submitted in a form suitable for reproduction (camera-ready copy). Computer-generated graphs are acceptable only if they have been printed with a good quality laser printer. Original, full-tone prints are required for photographs. Screened prints are unacceptable.

All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Ethan Pavlo at (201) 748-6714 or e-mail: epavlo@wiley.com for further information.

Tables. All tables should be cited sequentially in text, numbered, and supplied with explanatory captions. Table columns should have explanatory headings. Tables should be supplied, typed on separate sheets, and placed at the end of the manuscript following any figure captions. Tables should never be supplied typed within the body of the manuscript.

Proofs

Authors will be supplied with proofs to check the accuracy of typesetting. Authors may be charged for any alterations to the proofs beyond those needed to correct typesetting errors. Proofs must be checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Reprints

Senior authors will receive 25 reprints of their articles without charge. Additional reprints can be purchased by filling out the reprint order form which will be sent to the corresponding author along with the proofs. Reprints are normally shipped six to eight weeks after publication of the issue in which the item appears.

Correspondence

All other correspondence should be addressed to the Publisher, c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 605 Third Ave., New York, NY 10158.

Electronic Proofing

In order to expedite the publication and on-line posting of articles in Wiley InterScience, the Journal of Combinatorial Designs now offers electronic proofing. Corresponding authors with e-mail addresses will be sent page proofs (and paperwork, such as reprint order forms) in pdf format via e-mail. Please follow the instructions in the e-mail; contact names and numbers are given for questions, problems, or if an author wishes to receive a paper proof. A fax cover form with the Production Editor's information is also provided for authors to fax their corrections.

Guidelines for Electronic Submission

Authors are strongly encouraged to deliver the final, accepted version of their manuscript on a disk.

  • Storage Medium. 3?inch disk in IBM MS-DOS or Macintosh format.
  • Software. LaTeX is preferred.
  • All TeX files will be accepted. However, if you prefer to use the macros created by the publisher, they are available via the Internet on the John Wiley & Sons, Inc. FTP server. The address is: ftp.wiley.com/public/journals/tex/combdesi. Log in as anonymous and use your e-mail address as a password. For more information see the README file in the combdesi subdirectory.
  • Illustrations. Electronic illustrations are encouraged, but not required. Submit each article's illustrations in a separate directory on the same disk as the article. TIFF and EPS files or native application files are accepted. For grey scale and color figure submissions please contact us for more detailed instructions.
  • File names. Submit each journal article as one single file. Each file should be named using your last name (not to exceed 8 letters). If your last name exceeds eight letters it should be truncated to fit.
  • Label all disks with your name, the title of your article, the file name, and the program used.
  • The disk must be accompanied by hard copy printout.
