Instructions to Authors

Dear author,

In order to simplify the procedure of interaction between an author (coauthors) and the publisher we ask you to send agreements on transfer of copyright (in Russian or in English) simultaneously with the manuscript of the article to the editorial board of the journal. The agreement should be sent in duplicate.

This agreement is a contract of adhesion.

We draw your attention to the fact that the agreement enters into force under the condition of acceptance of an article for publication in English. If for any reason your article is refused by the editorial board of the journal, the agreement automatically loses force. The decision on acceptance of an article for publication is the exclusive right of the editorial board of the journal. Signing of the agreement by an author (coauthors) means that the author (coauthors) has acquainted himself (themselves) and agrees (agree) with the conditions of the agreement.

A copyright transfer agreement form can be downloaded at our site:

Model Author's Agreement Form

The completed and signed agreements may be presented in person or sent to the editorial board of the journal:

  • by post
  • by e-mail (PDF file) or fax; the original must be subsequently mailed by post.

Rules for Authors

download the file in .pdf format guidelines.pdf

Dear Authors,

When preparing your manuscripts for submission, please familiar yourselves with our rules and advice.

Articles that are not prepared in accordance with the rules laid out below may be returned to the authors without being registered with the Editors, or sent to the archive. These rules are based on the Technical Appendix to the Agreement of Publication of the English version of “Astronomicheskii Zhurnal” between the international academic publication company “Nauka/Interperiodika” and the Editorial Board of the “Astronomicheskii Zhurnal.”

1. Formatting of Articles

1.1. The text should be entered in Times New Roman (12 pt) font and with a spacing of either 1.5 or 2. The article should be carefully edited, and all pages must be numbered. For the purposes of presenting a manuscript for inspection by the Editors of the journal, it is sufficient to send an elecronic version by email. Simultaneously, one paper copy should be sent to the Editors, together with the agreement of copyright transfer (2 copies), which can be obtained at the site http://www.maik.ru.

1.2. The electronic version of the article should be presented in LaTeX (the corresponding style file can be obtained on the site). Please use the “attach” facility when sending files by email. If the size of a file or set of files is large, we ask that you reduce this size using an archiving facility such as ZIP, RAR, or ARJ.

1.3. The beginning of the article is formatted in the following order: title, authors, full names of the affiliations in which the work was carried out, and a short abstract, followed by the PACS code for the article (see http://www.aip.org/pacs). The abstract should not contain abbreviations or references.

1.5. Acknowledgements (without a special heading) are added to the end of the CONCLUSION section.

1.6. After the CONCLUSION, the postal address, telephone number, fax number, and email address of the contact author should be indicated.

1.7. The list of references should begin on a separate page after the text of the article, with the heading REFERENCES.

1.8. Figure captions should be placed on a separate page, after the list of references.

1.9. Figures and photographs should be included separately at the end of the article.

2. General Recommendations

2.1. All abbreviations must be defined, with the exception of a small number of widely used ones.

2.2. Formulas should use only Latin or Greek letters.

2.3. Vectors should be written using bold font, for example, E, B (with no arrow above). Scalar quantities should be written using italic, for example, n, T.

2.4. Mathematical symbols such as sin, lim, log, max, exp, erf, symbols for chemical elements, and notation for types of waves (O waves, TM mode, E01 mode) and plasma-confinement regimes (L and H modes) should be written using ordinary font.

3. Formatting of References:

3.1. All references should be presented in their original language and numbered in strict agreement with the order of their appearance in the article. Each reference in the text should refer to a single source in the reference list.

3.2. Names of cited articles should not be given.

3.3. If the number of authors does not exceed four, all authors must be indicated. If there are more than four authors, the names of the first three authors are given, followed by “et al.”

3.4. In references to conference proceedings, seminars, and so forth, the full names must be indicated, together with the conference location and year (but not the month and dates of the conference). If possible, it is desirable to indicate the Editors of published conference proceedings, the publisher, and the place and year of publication.

3.5. In references to preprints, the full name of the organization (institute) publishing the preprint must be indicated, together with the year and place of publication.

3.6. If the page numbering in the journal is continuous throughout an entire volume (as for Physics of Fluids, for example), the issue number should not be indicated.

3.7. If the page numbering begins again with each issue (as for Astronomy Letters, for example), the issue number should be indicated in parantheses after the volume.

3.8. If the journal has several series (such as BAHT), the name of the series must be indicated.

3.9. Use the accepted abbreviations of names of journals (ZhETP, Astron. and Astrophys., Astrophys. J., etc.)

4. Formatting of Numerical Material:

4.1. Numerical material must be given in the form of tables.

4.2. Tables are numbered using Arabic numbers, in the order in which they are referred to in the text. The name of the table usually follows the table number.

4.3. All the columns in tables must have headers and be divided by vertical lines.

5. Formatting of Figures:

5.1. Figures should be clear and understandable. The figure number and surname of the first author must be indicated below each figure.

5.2. If several figures are shown together under a single number (for example, 1a, 1b, and so forth), they should all have a single caption.

5.3. The quantities plottedmust be indicated along the horizontal and vertical axes of plots together with the corresponding units, for example R, cm; ne, 1013 cm-3; θ, deg; I, rel. units.

5.4. Avoid cluttering figures with various labels. All the textual information referring to a figure must be contained in the caption below the figure. Curves in figures can be numbered, with a key to the numbers given in the caption.

5.5. TIFF, JPEG, GIF, or BMP format with resolution 600 dpi and 256 shades of gray should be used for raster figures. A resolution no worse than 300 dpi should be used for photographs. Figures in EPS and PDF formats are also acceptable.
