Instructions to Authors
Scope Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention (CEBP) publishes original research on cancer causation, mechanisms of carcinogenesis, prevention, and survivorship. The following topics are of special interest: descriptive, analytical, and molecular epidemiology; the use of biomarkers to study the neoplastic and preneoplastic processes; chemoprevention and other types of prevention trials; and the role of behavioral factors in cancer etiology and prevention.
Particular attention will be given to the identification of factors associated with various aspects of the carcinogenic process, including genetic susceptibility, host factors, infectious agents, chemical and physical carcinogens, environmental contaminants, dietary components and behavioral factors such as tobacco use and sun exposure.
Besides welcoming manuscripts that address individual subjects in any of the relevant disciplines, the Editors encourage the submission of manuscripts with an interdisciplinary approach.
Editorial Policy When a manuscript is received for consideration, the Editors assume that all authors have agreed to its submission and that no similar paper has been or will be submitted for publication elsewhere. Upon acceptance, authors must transfer copyright to the American Association for Cancer Research, Inc., the publisher and copyright owner of the journal, prior to publication. Once an article is accepted for publication in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention the information therein is embargoed from reporting by the media until the mail date of the issue in which the article appears.
The Editors endorse the principles embodied in the Declaration of Helsinki and expect that all investigations involving humans will have been performed in accordance with these principles. A copy of the Declaration is available from the World Medical Association, Bôite Postale 63, 01212, Ferney-Voltaire Cedex, France.
Journal policy requires that authors, reviewers, Associate Editors, and Senior Editors reveal to the Editor-in-Chief any relationships that they believe could be construed as causing a conflict of interest with regard to the manuscript submitted for review.
Publication Categories Descriptions of the types of articles considered for publication (and page limits, if any) are listed below. [Note: A single published page is approximately equal to 1000 words of text, 50 references, or 4 tables or figures of average size.]
Original Research Paper Research Articles.Manuscripts that report original studies in epidemiology, biomarkers, prevention, or behavioral sciences relating to cancer which are well-documented, novel, and of high scientific merit. Most manuscripts will be published within 8 weeks of acceptance. Short Communication. Original research articles of scientific merit that are limited in scope; short communications should be no more than 4 published pages in length. Null Results in Brief. Original reports of null results of important a priori hypotheses tested with sufficient statistical power. These brief reports should be no more than 1 published page in length and must follow the specified format exactly. Please indicate in your covering letter that your submission is for the Null Results category. Note that authors of submissions to the Null Results in Brief category will be permitted to make only minor revisions; submissions that require substantive revisions will not be accepted. In addition, reviewers' comments may not be provided to authors of rejected manuscripts.
Special Articles Letters to the Editor. Readers are welcome to submit comments on articles recently published in the journal. Letters should be no more than 1 published page in length. Reviews and Minireviews. Reviews and minireviews on timely subjects of interest and importance to the readers of CEBP are welcome. Unsolicited reviews will be considered for publication, and others will be invited by the Editor. Reviews should be no more than 10 published pages in length. Minireviews are more focused articles and should be no more than 5 published pages in length. Meeting Reports. Reports on relevant symposia and conferences should include a statement of purpose, a summary of the findings presented, and recommendations for future research. Meeting reports should be no more than 5 published pages in length. Hypotheses/Commentaries. Creative new insights or commentaries that present original ideas relating to cancer causes and prevention. Hypotheses and Commentaries should be no more than 4 published pages in length. Global Perspectives. Summaries of current national research programs which increase international awareness within the scientific community are welcome. These summaries should be no more than 5 published pages in length.
Invited Articles Editorials. Brief papers commenting on articles in the journal. Point-Counterpoint. Articles featuring two or more experts in a particular field who present counter-balancing views on a topic of interest to the readership. News. Information of interest to the readers of CEBP, such as public issues, funding for cancer research, public education, science education, training opportunities in the field, etc.
Priority Publication The standard time from final acceptance to publication is approximately 8 weeks. However, outstanding manuscripts will be placed on an accelerated Priority Publication schedule, reducing the publication time for these papers to 4-5 weeks. Priority Publication status is assigned at the discretion of the Senior Editors and applies only to manuscripts that require minor modifications. Revisions of Priority Publication manuscripts should be returned to the AACR Publications Office by express mail within one week of notification.
Manuscript Submission CEBP is now accepting manuscript submissions online. The AACR Online Manuscript Submission System is available at www.rapidreview.com/AACR2/author.html.
Authors are expected submit their manuscripts online. Authors that cannot submit their files online will be asked to fill out the online submission form and either e-mail their manuscript files or mail hard copy manuscripts to the Editorial Office for uploading. For hard copy submissions, mail four copies of manuscripts to Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, AACR Publications Department, 615 Chestnut St., 17th Floor Philadelphia, PA 19106-4404. If a manuscript is closely related to papers that are in press or have been submitted elsewhere, please provide copies of those papers with your submission. If study subjects or methods are more fully described elsewhere, please provide reprints. In order to expedite the review process, authors must indicate in a cover letter the specialty area of the paper. Specialty areas are as follows:
Epidemiology Molecular Epidemiology Genetic Epidemiology Biomarkers in Prevention Nutrition in Prevention Screening and Early Detection Behavior in Prevention Chemoprevention Survivorship and Supportive Care Methods and New Models Fax transmission and overnight delivery service will be used to expedite review and publication.

Typesetting Manuscripts from Computer Disks Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention requests the submission of disks to expedite production of accepted manuscripts. If your article is accepted for publication, you will receive instructions regarding disk submission and a form which must be completed and returned with your disk to the AACR Publications Department within 48 hours of notification of acceptance. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that the material on the disk matches the final accepted version of the manuscript.
Proofs Page proofs must be returned to the office of the American Association for Cancer Research within 24 hours of receipt. Return proofs by overnight mail. Proofs not received by the deadline will be published without the authors' corrections. Accepted manuscripts are regarded as final copy and should not be altered substantially in proof. Extensive alterations could cause publication delays, and authors will be charged for excessive changes in proof.
Publication Fees A page charge of $50 per printed page will be levied on all manuscripts accepted for publication. It is understood at the time of submission that the author(s) agree to pay this charge in the event of publication. Under exceptional circumstances, when no grant or other source of support exists, the author(s) may apply to Dr. Margaret Foti, Director of Publications, AACR Publications Department (address below) at the time of submission for a waiver of the page charges. All such applications must be countersigned by an appropriate institutional official stating that no funds are available for the payment of page charges.
