Instructions to Authors
Cardiovascular Pathology is the official Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology. The Journal publishes peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of the pathology and pathobiology of cardiovascular disease and their implications for prevention, diagnosis and therapy. Authors are invited to submit original research articles. Brief communications, case reports with significant new findings, as well as letters to the Editors will be considered. Review articles may be invited or unsolicited submissions. Decisions regarding acceptance for publication of submitted articles will be made by the Editors. Submitted articles will be peer reviewed. Papers submitted for publication should not be under publication or review by any other journal. An assignment of copyright transfer must accompany the final version of the accepted manuscript submitted to Cardiovascular Pathology. No part of the published materials may be reproduced elsewhere without written permission from the publisher.
Aims of the Journal: Cardiovascular Pathology is a bimonthly journal that presents articles on topics covering the spectrum of cardiovascular disease. The Journal's primary objective is to publish papers on disease-oriented morphology and pathogenesis from clinicians and scientists in the cardiovascular field. Subjects covered include cardiac and vascular pathobiology, prosthetic devices, molecular biology, applied cardiovascular biology, and experimental models of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular Pathology also publishes timely and informative reviews on scientific areas in cardiovascular pathology, as well as case reports that represent significant or unique observations.
Mission: To publish timely scientific papers covering the spectrum of cardiovascular medicine with particular emphasis on cardiovascular pathology, applied cardiovascular biology, pathobiology and pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease.
General Guidelines: Manuscripts should be prepared in the style of the journal and should conform to the guidelines in "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals", fifth edition. These requirements were prepared by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 1997; 336: 309-15.
Conflict of Interest Disclosures: Sources of funding should be acknowledged and all authors must disclose any commercial association or other arrangement (financial compensation, potential to profit, consultancy, stock ownership, honorarium, patent - licensing arrangements, etc.), that might pose or imply a conflict of interest in connection with the submitted paper. Some or all such information will be available to the reviewers and at the discretion of the Editor, will be published in a footnote to the article. Failure to provide conflict of interest information may result in editorial retraction of the article.
Preparation of manuscripts: In the case of all original articles, the following materials must be submitted: An original and four copies of the manuscript, double spaced and on one side of white bond paper (size 22 x 28 cm/8.5 x 11 inches). A 3.0 cm (1.2 inch) margin all around is advised. The manuscript should be arranged as Title Page, Summary, Structured abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Figure legends, Tables and Figures. Pages must be numbered consecutively beginning with the Title Page as number 1. The last name of the first author must be typed at the top of each page. All authors listed on the title page should have full first name and degrees. This package must be submitted to the Editors-In-Chief, Cardiovascular Pathology, E4-316, University Health Network - Toronto General Hospital, 200 Elizabeth Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5G 2C4, Canada.
Upon receipt of manuscript, the Editorial Office will send a letter of acknowledgement to the corresponding author that includes the manuscript number assigned to the submitted article. All future correspondence must refer to the manuscript number.
Title Page: The Title page must include a concise title: name of each author; department, and institution address where the research was conducted; number of text pages including tables and figures; a short running title (60 characters or less); name, address, telephone number, fax number and email address of the corresponding author.
Key Words: Two to six key words should be listed on the title page for indexing of the article. These must be selected appropriately.
Summary: The mini summary should be up to 60 words long (on a separate sheet).
Structured Abstract: The structured abstract should be no more than 250 words and should be on a separate sheet. It must be divided into sections as: Background or Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusions.
References: References should begin on a separate page, be double spaced, and numbered in the order of citation in the text using Arabic numerals (on the line). References must include complete author's citations (use of "et al." is acceptable only if there are more than six authors in the listing - list the first three authors).
Example: Marino B, Digilio MC, Congenital heart disease and genetic syndromes: Specific correlation between cardiac phenotype and genotype. Cardiovasc Pathol 2000; 9: 303-316
Example: Club FJ, Cerny JL, Defarrari et al. Development of atherosclerotic plaque with endothelial disruption in Watanabe heritable hyperlidpidemic rabbit aortas, Cardiovasc Pathol. 2001; 1:2-9
Books: Silver MD, Butany JW. Diseases of the Pericardium. CV Pathol. Edited by Silver MD, Gotlieb AL, Schoen FJ, New York, Churchill Livingstone, 2001, pp 999-1041
In Press: This is to be used only for papers accepted for publication. Cite these articles as for other journal articles with (in press) in place of volume and page numbers. Papers submitted and unpublished data should be cited in the text only. They must not be referenced.
Text: Abbreviations must be defined at first mention in the text and should follow the form recommended in the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals". Headings and subheadings should be provided in the different sections of the article, such as methods, results, discussion, etc.
Experimental Animals: If experimental animals have been used in the study, a statement must be provided in the text (Method section) to indicate that all institutional committee approval had been obtained and that all procedures were in accordance with accepted institutional and governmental policies.
In the case of human subjects, the text must indicate that the appropriate institutional and ethics committee approval has been obtained.
Acknowledgements: Individuals who contributed significantly to the research or to the preparation of the manuscript may be acknowledged in this section. The covering letter to the Editor-In-Chief should indicate that those named have granted permission.
Legends: These must be typed on separate sheets, double spaced, separate from the text with Figure numbers corresponding to the order in which Figures appear within the text. All abbreviations listed in the Figures should be identified in alphabetical order at the end of each Legend. Sufficient information should be provided to permit the Figures to be appropriately interpreted without reference to the text. Material that is reproduced from previously published figures must be accompanied by written permission from the publisher. The source of the Figure should be cited in the Legend.
Tables: These must be printed double-spaced on separate sheets with the Table Number above the table and the table title immediately after the table number. Explanatory notes should be appended as footnotes. Table numbers should be in Arabic numerals and correspond to the order of appearance of the tables in the text. Tables must be self-explanatory and authors must insure that the data is not duplicated in the text. Written permission from the publisher must accompany the article when the table is reproduced from previously published data.
Figures: Illustrations must be carefully selected and of the highest quality. Four sets of unmounted glossy prints and drawings must accompany the submitted article. Artwork cannot be returned. Figures should be no larger than 22 x 28 cm (8.5 x 11.0 inches). Lettering on the Figures should be of sufficient size to withstand reduction during printing. Decimals, lines and other details must be bold enough for reproduction. Crop marks can be placed on photomicrographs to show the essential field and designate special features with arrow. The back of the Figure should list the first author's last name and a brief title for the paper along with an arrow to indicate which side is up. Figures must be limited to those essential to the paper. There is no charge for black and white illustrations. Color illustrations should be used only when absolutely essential. Color art reproduction costs will be charged to the author (about $900 U.S. per color page).
Communications: Brief communications should be limited to 1500 words, 15 references, and no more than one Figure or Table. The materials and methods may be condensed but must be of sufficient detail to permit evaluation by reviewers and reproduction by other workers.
Full Manuscripts: Manuscript text (excluding abstract, references, legends and tables) should not exceed 3000 words (12 double spaced pages). However, longer submissions will be considered.
Letters to the Editor: These should be limited to 1000 words, 10 references, and one Figure or Table.
Electronic Submissions: After review and revision of the paper, the authors must include an electronic copy of the paper on a floppy/Zip drive as well as a clean copy and a copy on which the revisions made are clearly indicated. This should contain all the corrections required by the reviewers. It is the author's responsibility to insure that the copy of the paper on the diskette is identical to the hard copy submitted with it.
Proofs: The printer will send a set of page proofs to the corresponding author. The author must check the proofs carefully and mark any printer's errors and answer all queries. Changes must be kept to a minimum. Proofs must be returned within 48 hours to avoid any further delays in publication. In exceptional circumstances, the corresponding author must communicate with the editors if any delay is anticipated. The entire manuscript must be returned to the publisher.
