Copyright And Exclusive Submission

A copyright assignment form signed by all authors needs to accompany the manuscript upon submission. An appropriate form is occasionally printed in JMRI as space permits.

Financial Interest

Authors must describe any direct or indirect financial interest they may have in the subject matter of a submitted manuscript, and must authorize the ISMRM right to publish this financial disclosure with the article if deemed appropriate. The Financial Disclosure policy of the ISMRM is as follows:

"Each author shall describe (a) any direct financial interest which that author has in the subject matter discussed in the submitted manuscript, and (b) any affiliation or financial involvement which that author has with or in any organization with a direct financial interest in the subject matter discussed in the submitted manuscript. Such information will be held in the confidence of the journal editor during the review process. If necessary, in the editor's review, this information may be shared with reviewers after discussion between the editor and author. The author shall grant permission for the ISMRM to publish the financial information described above, or an appropriate summary thereof, with the manuscript if the manuscript is accepted for publication."

Manuscript Preparation

Original writings will be accepted only with the understanding that they are contributed solely to JMRI. Manuscripts should be typewritten and double- or preferably triple-spaced (all pages) on only one side of the paper with at least 3-cm margins. If the manuscript is produced with a dot matrix printer, appropriate steps should be taken to ensure legibility (e.g., printers could be set in the double-strike mode. Each manuscript component should begin on a new page in this order: Title page, Abstract, Text, Acknowledgements, References, Tables (each on a separate page) and Captions for illustrations. The title page and abstract page should not be numbered. Sequential numbering should begin with the Introduction. FOUR copies of the manuscript and four complete sets of figures should be submitted. General guidelines for manuscript length and number of references and illustrations are as follows:

Original Research: up to 20 manuscript pages (5,000 words), 40 references, 10 figures and tables.

Technical and Clinical Notes: up to 10 manuscript pages (2,500 words), 20 references, 5 figures and tables.

Reviews: up to 30 manuscript pages (7,500 words), 100 references, 15 figures and tables.

Authors in Japan please note: Wiley-Japan can provide authors in Japan with a list of recommended services to check and improve the English in their papers BEFORE SUBMISSION. Please contact Masayo Kobayashi in the Wiley-Japan office by Fax (81-3-3556-9763)or e-mail (wileyjpn@mb.kcom.ne.jp) for more information, stating which Wiley journal you wish to submit to.

Because accepted manuscripts will not be returned, the author should retain a copy. All manuscripts are acknowledged; please allow 10-15 days from the time you mailed the manuscript for receipt of an acknowledgement.

Authors must submit electronic diskettes of the final version of their manuscript along with the typed final version of their manuscript. Please label your diskette with the title, the corresponding author and the manuscript number. Diskettes produced on IBM or IBM-compatible computers are preferred, but those produced on Apple/ Macintosh and Wang computers can also be converted. Authors preparing on Macintosh computers should not use the Fast Save Option. Identify the diskette by providing journal name, manuscript title, name of computer file, type of hardware, operating system and version number and software program and version number. The electronic copy of the manuscript needs to be exactly identical to the accepted final version of the hard copy. The journal does not assume responsibility for errors in conversion of customized software, newly released software and special characters. Mathematics and tabular material will be processed in the traditional manner.

Title Page

This page should include first names, middle initials, and degrees of all authors, the name and street address (not a postal box) of the institution from which the work originated, the telephone and FAX numbers and E-mail address of the corresponding author, and information concerning grants. The reprint address should include the complete name, street address (not a postal box), and zip code. It is important to indicate on the title page whether your paper has been presented at an ISMRM meeting (please give year) or has been accepted for presentation at a future meeting. In addition to listing the full title, the title page should include a short running title of 40 characters or less.

Abstract And Key Words

An abstract of no more than 200 words must be submitted with each manuscript. Abstracts submitted with major papers and Technical Notes must be structured as follows: Purpose (state the reason for the study; use an infinitive phrase rather than a complete sentence [e.g., To evaluate . . .]), Materials and Methods (briefly describe how the study was performed), Results (briefly describe the most important results), Conclusion (briefly state what is concluded from the results). Abstracts submitted with Clinical Notes (case reports) should follow an unstructured format and should state in a single paragraph what was done, what was found, and what was concluded. Every manuscript must include a list of three to six key words below the abstract. These words will assist indexers who will then classify the paper under specific subject headings for future indexes.

REFERENCES

Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote
EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style.
Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy, click here.
Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.

Number references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned. The abbreviations used for periodicals cited in the references should follow the style of Index Medixus. For journal articles, list surnames and initials of all authors when six or less, such as:

  1. Rapoport S, Sostman H, Pope C, Camputaro C, Holcomb W, Gore J. Venous clots: evaluation with MR imaging. Radiology 1987; 162:527-530.

When seven or more authors are listed, only the first three names need to be identified, followed by "et al," such as:

  1. Pattany P, Phillips J, Chiu L, et al. Motion artifact suppression technique (MAST) for MR Imaging. J Comput Assist Tomogr 1987; 11:369-377.

Abstracts, editorials and letters to the editor should be noted as such. In the case of books, the authors of a chapter, title of the chapter, editor(s), title of the book, edition, city, publisher, year, and specific pages must be provided.

  1. Spritzer CE, Herfkens RJ, Cardiovascular disease and MRI. In: Kressel HY, ed. Magnetic resonance annual, 1988. New York: Raven, 1988; 217-244.

Please be sure that all documentation is accurate.

Tables

Tables should be numbered in Arabic numerals and should have a title. All abbreviations used in the table should be explained in a footnote.

Illustrations

Illustrations should be limited to those required to show the essential features in the paper. Excessive illustrations encroach on the total space available in JMRI to the detriment of the publication. Unretouched glossy prints no larger than 20-x 25 cm (8-x 10 in.) are desirable. Prints to be combined into one cut, such as anteroposterior and lateral views, should be the same height to facilitate reproduction. Prints should correspond in appearance to the tonal relations of the original image (with the patient's right to the observer's left for coronal images; axial images should employ the "view from below"). Drawings and charts should be rendered professionally in India ink on white paper.

All photographs and drawings must be numbered and the top indicated on the back. For protection against loss or damage, each figure should then be neatly attached to paper (one illustration per page), and the number and top should be reindicated on this page. For attachment, avoid using glue, staples, or corner mounts. Because it holds the illustration securely to the page without damage, we recommend Scotch Removable Magic Tape (3M, St Paul, Minn.). Please do not add letters or numbers to the face of the illustration to identify the figure (such as 1A or 1B). This will be done during the printing process. Arrows should not be placed on images prior to photography for print production; they should be placed on the final print and should be removable.

If arrows, letters and numbers are added to the prints, they must be of professional quality and must be removable. The desired additions may simply be indicated on tissue or a transparent overlay attached to the print.

Illustrations become the property of the ISMRM and will be stored for 2 years after publication. Illustrations will be returned only upon receipt of a written request from the corresponding author.

For each accepted manuscript, the Journal provides one page of color free of charge. This page may contain multiple illustrations. The cost of reproduction for additional color is $500 per page, which cost the author(s) must bear. At the request of the author(s), the Publisher will also include gratis in the electronic edition of the Journal any or all color illustrations included in their manuscript, even if some or all of these illustrations appear as black and white figures in the print edition. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Andrea Ritola at aritola@wiley.com for further information. We suggest that authors make and keep a set of figures in addition to the four sets submitted to JMRI.

Electronic publishing, coupled with new image scanning technology that improves halftone production, has created the opportunity for streamlining the publication process. At the same time, quality will be enhanced. As a result, authors will no longer routinely receive photoproofs of their images. As in the past, the Publications Department and the Editorial Office will be responsible for image quality at the proof stage and most important, in the printed journal. It is extremely important, therefore, that authors check the accuracy of any keys on the images before the final versions are sent to the Editorial Office.

Electronic Submission

Images submitted must be in Encapsulated PostScript (EPS). They may be submitted from either an MS-DOS or Macintosh system. Adobe PhotoShop, or EPS files created in either Aldus Freehand or QuarkXPress are recommended. Do not submit any graphics done in Excel or PowerPoint. All cropping and manipulation must be completed before the images are submitted to the publisher.

Resolutions of scanned images are as follows: Line art is to be scanned at 1200 dots per inch (dpi). Halftones are to be scanned at 300 dpi. To ensure good reproduction on press, the minimum black value on a halftone scan (high-light) should be 4% black. The maximum value (shadow) should be no longer than 95%. Avoid the use of fine lines (1/2 point and below) for graphs and charts. Use only Adobe Type 1 fonts in creating images, and limit the number of fonts used. Do not reletter images in PhotoShop. If relettering must be done, import the image into either Freehand or QuarkXPress and reletter, then make an EPS file. Make sure all scanned images are "clean". Look for and clean up dust specks, scratches, tape marks, and any thing that is not part of the actual image. Files generated in Freehand should be saved in EPS format. All files should be submitted with back-up camera ready figures in case the digital image is not useable.

If you are using QuarkXPress to do image assembly, please follow these guidelines: a. After creating the image, adjust the page size in the "Document Setup" window in the pull-down menus. b. Modify the page size to be only slightly larger than the image size. If the image size is 20p wide by 10p deep, make the page size 22p wide by 12p deep and center the image within the page. c. Once this has been done, save the page as an EPS file by doing a "Save As..." from the pull-down menu. d. Each image must be submitted as a separated EPS file. Do not submit an entire Xpress file saved in EPS format.

Captions For Illustrations

A caption must be supplied for each illustration and should not duplicate text material. All figure captions should appear collectively on one or more pages separate from the text, and each caption should also appear below the corresponding illustration.

Text

The text of observational and experimental studies is arranged in sections with headings Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion. Long papers may need subheadings in both the Materials and Methods and the Results sections to clarify their content. The use of subheadings in the Discussion section is discouraged.

Introduction: Clearly state the purpose of the study or observation. Give only strictly pertinent references, and do not review the subject extensively.

Materials and Methods: Describe your selection of the observational or experimental subjects (patients or experimental animals, including controls) clearly. Identify the method, instrumentation (manufacturer's name and address in parentheses), and procedures in sufficient detail to allow other workers to reproduce the results. Do not include the name of the institution where the work was performed, either within the text or at the top of each manuscript page. Give references to established methods, including statistical methods that have been published but are not well known; describe new or substantially modified methods, give reasons for using these techniques, and evaluate their limitations. Include numbers of observations and the statistical significance of the findings when appropriate. Detailed statistical analyses, mathematical derivations, and the like may sometimes be suitably presented in one or more appendixes.

Results: Present the results in logical sequence in the text, tables, and illustrations. Do not repeat in the text all the data in the tables and/or illustrations; summarize only important observations.

Discussion: Emphasize the new and important aspects of the study and conclusions that follow from them. Do not repeat in detail the data given in the Results section. Include in the Discussion the implications of the findings and their limitations, and relate the observations to other relevant studies. Link conclusions with the goals of the study, but avoid unqualified statements and conclusions not supported completely by the data. Avoid claiming priority and alluding to work that has not been completed. State new hypotheses when warranted, but clearly label them as such. Recommendations, when appropriate, may be included.

Author Submission Guidelines for Supplementary Material

Supplementary material for articles published in JMRI is now available over the Internet. Access is through the World Wide Web. Supplementary material may include (but is not limited to) video clips, large sections of tabular data, program code, or electronic graphical files that are otherwise not suitable for print media. When submitting material for consideration please follow the guidelines below.

Submission of Supplementary Material

Peer review: Supplementary Material must be submitted at the time of peer review. Submit a paper copy of the material (in the case of material that exists in electronic form only, please consult the editor to whom you submitted the paper).

Acceptance and electronic submission:Once material has been accepted by the editors, it must be submitted in electronic form on PC or MacIntosh 3.5" diskette, or Zip disk.

All files submitted must be accompanied by a text file named README. The README file should include the following information.

Title of paper
Authors and their affiliations
Filename, file size, file type
Brief description of material

The data and the README file should be archived together using one of the popular archive protocols such as ZIP, TAR, GZIP, or SIT.

If you have more than one piece of supplementary material, you should submit a separate archive for each, with an accompanying README file; however, if it is intended that multiple files be downloaded as a single unit by the enduser, submit one archive and one README file.

Data file types:There are no restrictions on filetypes of data that you submit. Please keep in mind, however, that the more universal the filetype the more accessible to the community. The use of popular compression protocols is highly encouraged. If your material is presented in PostScript format, the submission of an accompanying Adobe Acrobat PDF file is encouraged, in that event both formats will be offered to the journal's readers. In cases where PDF files do not accompany a PostScript file, only the PostScript will be offered.

Publication and Access: Supplementary material for published articles will be made available via the JMRI World Wide Web Site (http://journals.wiley.com/journalofmagneticresonanceimaging)to authorized users, i.e., those whose institutions hold full rate subscriptions to the print journal, and have activated online access. From the table of contents listing, any article that has supplementary material will be noted by an icon. The icon will link to the page that describes the material in detail, and to the material itself.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author together with reprint price list and order form. Authors should indicate all corrections in the margins of the proofs. Authors' alterations in excess of 10 changes will be charged to the author.

To avoid delays in publication, proofs should be returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Reprints: Authors may order reprints by using the reprint order form that accompanies the proofs.

Book Reviews

Anyone who would like to help in reviewing books for JMRI should contact:

Johnathan S. Lewin, M.D.
University Hospitals of Cleveland/CWRU
Department of Radiology

Units and Abbreviations

Radiation measurements and laboratory values should be given in the International System of Units (SI) (resources: SI Units in Radiation Protection and Measurements, NCRP Report no. 82 [August 1985]; "Now Read This: The SI Units Are Here," JAMA 1986; 255:2329-2339). Blood pressure should still be reported in millimeters mercury. Abbreviations should be spelled out when first used in the text, such as "cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).' Magnetic resonance terminology should conform to the Glossary of MR Terms published by the American College of Radiology. Laboratory slang, clinical jargon and uncommon abbreviations should be avoided. Discussion of the previous literature and material presented must be restricted to the significant findings.

Informed Consent

Manuscripts reporting the results of experimental studies on human subjects must include a statement to the effect that informed consent was obtained after the nature of the procedure(s) had been fully explained.

The maintenance and care of experimental animals to provide humane treatment and to ensure reliable results are described in the National Institutes of Health guidelines for use of laboratory animals. Authors are advised to comply with these guidelines and to acknowledge such compliance in their manuscripts.

Rights and Permissions

Written permission must be granted by the publisher and author (for both print and electronic reproduction) to reproduce any previously published figures, and any such material must be clearly noted and its source given in the manuscript. A letter of permission must accompany photographs of patients or technologists if they could be recognized; otherwise, the eyes must be blocked out to prevent identification.

Author Responsibility

Authors must be certain that no manuscript on the same or similar material has been or will be submitted to another journal by themselves or others at their institution before their work appears in JMRI. The submission by authors of similar material to advertising media must be indicated at the time JMRI receives the manuscript.

Checklist of Requirements:

  1. Send 4 copies of manuscript and 4 copies of illustrations.
  2. Mount each illustration on a separate page, 81/2 x 11 inches. Indicate figure number and top.
  3. Double- or triple- space all parts of manuscript. Leave 3-cm (1-inch) margins.
  4. Send copyright agreement with signatures of all authors.
  5. Send institutional affiliation for each author and corresponding author's name, address, phone and FAX numbers and E-mail address.
  6. Send a brief abstract of 200 words (80 words for Clinical Notes).
  7. Give SI units for radiation measurements and laboratory values.
  8. Send copy of letter of permission to reprint a figure that was published previously.
  9. If manuscript is accepted for publication, submit revised version on computer diskette in addition to hard copy.

Disk Submission Instructions

Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy.
The hard copy must match the disk.

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).

Guidelines for Electronic Submission

Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.

Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations
All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.

Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.

Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps). 278

Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
