About the journal

Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems is an international journal dedicated to publishing original papers that relate specifically to freshwater, brackish or marine habitats and encouraging work that spans these ecosystems. This journal provides a forum in which all aspects of the conservation of aquatic biological resources can be presented and discussed, enabling greater cooperation and efficiency in solving problems in aquatic resource conservation. The publication of both practical studies in conservation as well as theoretical considerations of the underlying principles is encouraged. Contributions are accepted from as wide a geographical range as possible to ensure a broad representation of conservation issues in both developed and developing countries. The journal also publishes short communications, review articles, discussions and book reviews.

Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems serves as a focus for scientists in research institutes, universities, industry, nature conservation organizations and all levels of government as well as aquatic habitat and fishery managers and policy makers concerned with these issues.

The subjects covered include the following topics:

Theoretical principles underlying conservation.

Survey, surveillance and monitoring.

Habitat and community classification.

Assessment of conservation value.

Status of endangered species, communities and habitats.

Management of habitats and communities.

Water quality standards for nature conservation.

Impact assessment (including exploitation of living and non-living resources, aquaculture, control of predatory species, coast defence, land claim, waste disposal and pollution, acidification, forestry, recreation, shipping and navigation, educational and scientific studies, climatic change etc.).

Creative conservation and rehabilitation.

Conservation strategies - local, regional, national and international.

Legal framework for conservation e.g. protected area and species.

Inter-relationship of marine and freshwater ecosystems e.g. manipulation of river flows to estuarine and coastal waters for water resource management, hydroelectric or tidal power.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission. Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems operates an online submission and peer review system that allows authors to submit articles online and track their progress via a web interface. Please read the remainder of these instructions to authors and then click http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aqc to navigate to the Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems online submission site. IMPORTANT: Please check whether you already have an account in the system before trying to create a new one. If you have reviewed or authored for the journal in the last year it is likely that you will have had an account created.

All papers must be submitted via the online system.

File Types. Preferred formats for the text and tables of your manuscript are .doc, .rtf, .ppt, .xls. LaTeX files may be submitted provided that an .eps or .pdf file is provided in addition to the source files. Figures may be provided in .tiff or .eps format.

Please note: This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents at this time. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as a .doc file type. If you try to upload a Word 2007 document you will be prompted to save .docx files as .doc files.

Initial Submission:

NON-LATEX USERS: Upload your manuscript files. At this stage, further source files do not need to be uploaded.
LATEX USERS: For reviewing purposes you should upload a single .pdf that you have generated from your source files. You must use the File Designation "Main Document" from the dropdown box.

Submission of a Revised Manuscript:

NON-LATEX USERS: Editable source files must be uploaded at this stage. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate figure files.

LATEX USERS: When submitting your revision you must still upload a single .pdf that you have generated from your now revised source files. You must use the File Designation "Main Document" from the dropdown box. In addition you must upload your TeX source files. For all your source files you must use the File Designation "Supplemental Material not for review". Previous versions of uploaded manuscripts must be deleted. If your manuscript is accepted for publication we will use the files you upload to typeset your article within a totally digital workflow.

Copyright and Permissions

Authors must sign, scan and upload to the online system:

a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and

permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form .

The Copyright Transfer Form and the Permissions Form should be uploaded as “Supplementary files not for review” with the online submission of your article.

If you do not have access to a scanner, further instructions will be given to you after acceptance of the manuscript.

To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of the year on the Wiley Online Library website and through links in the online submission system. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editors or publisher.

Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.

OnlineOpen

OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen, the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley Online Library, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. For the full list of terms and conditions, see: http://wileyonlinelibrary.com/onlineopen#OnlineOpen_Terms

Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at: https://wileyonlinelibrary.com/onlineopen.

Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

Manuscript Style

The language of the journal is English. All submissions must have a title and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.

The title page must list the full title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.

Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s) .

Supply an abstract of up to 300 words for all articles [except book reviews]. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work and consist of a series of short, numbered statements.

Include up to eight keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.

Divide your article into sections entitled Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion and Acknowledgements unless the nature of the paper justifies an alternative format.

Pre-Submission English Language Editing

Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. Japanese authors can also find a list of local English improvement services at http://www.wiley.co.jp/journals.editcontribute.html. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.

Reference Style

References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al ., 1998)

All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Gee JHR, Smith BD, Lee KM, Griffiths SW. 1997. The ecological basis of freshwater pond management for biodiversity. Aquatic Conservation: Marine Freshwater Ecosystems 7 : 91-104. DOI: 10.1002/aqc.123

Naiman RJ. 1994. Principles of Conservation Biology . Sinauer Associates: Sunderland, MA.

Illustrations

Upload each figure as a separate file in either .tiff or .eps format, the figure number and the top of the figure indicated. Compound figures e.g. 1a, b, c should be uploaded as one figure. Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Where a key to symbols is required, please include this in the artwork itself, not in the figure legend. All illustrations must be supplied at the correct resolution:

Black and white and colour photos - 300 dpi

Graphs, drawings, etc - 800 dpi preferred; 600 dpi minimum

Combinations of photos and drawings (black and white and colour) - 500 dpi

Tables should be part of the main document and should be placed after the references. If the table is created in excel the file should be uploaded separately.

Colour Illustrations

It is the policy of Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Please note that figures are published in colour online free of charge, however, the reproduction of colour figures in print is charged at the rate of £250 GBP for the first page and £150 GBP per page thereafter. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, you must notify the Production Editor if you require your illustrations to be reprinted in colour in print.

Post Acceptance

Further Information. For accepted manuscripts the publisher will supply proofs to the submitting author prior to publication. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Free access to the final PDF offprint of your article will be available via Author Services only (unless otherwise stated). Please therefore sign up for Author Services if you would like to access your article PDF offprint and enjoy the many other benefits the service offers. Reprints of your article and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
