About the journal
The aim of the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology is to provide a forum for the publication of papers dealing with all aspects of the study of human and animal bones from archaeological contexts. The journal will publish original papers dealing with human or animal bone research from any area of the world. It will also publish short papers which give important preliminary observations from work in progress and it will publish book reviews. All papers will be subject to peer review.
Papers from any of the following principal areas of work would be considered for publication.
Palaeopathology: Human and animal diseases as found in actual human and animal remains, including radiographic, histological and serological and immunological studies.
Physical anthropology: Ageing, sexing, metric and morphological analysis of human and animal bone. The application of demographic analyses to both.
Epidemiology: Prevalence and aetiology of disease and the factors influencing these in human and animal populations. Secular trends.
Chemical analysis: Exposure of past populations to toxic substances; reconstruction of the diet and other nutritional studies of human and animal bones.
Exploitation of animal resources: Studies of the means of procuring and managing animal food sources including hunting, butchery and domestication.
Taphonomy: Processes, both natural and man-made, which affect the preservation and survival of bone.
The journal will be aimed principally towards all those with a professional interest in the study of human and animal bones. This includes archaeologists, anthropologists, human and animal bone specialists, palaeopathologists and medical historians. We also hope to attract and encourage students and others for whom this field is of serious but peripheral interest.
Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to one of the editors at the following addresses:
- Professor T O'Connor, Department of Archaeology, University of York, King's Manor, York YO1 7EP, UK or
- Professor G J R Maat, Department of Anatomy, Leiden University, PO Box 9602, RC Leiden, The Netherlands or
- Professor S A Saunders, Department of Anthropology, McMaster University, 1280 Main Street West, Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4L9, Canada.
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested. The editors cannot enter into correspondence about papers which are rejected as unsuitable for publication and their decision is final.
Final Submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect and TeX or one of its derivatives.
Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply an abstract of up to 300 words for all articles [except book reviews]. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to eight keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998)
All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
Gerasimov MM. 1955. Reconstruction of the Face on the Skull. Nauha: Moscow.
Estevez J. 2004. Vanishing carnivores: What can the disappearance of large carnivores tell us about the Neanderthal world?. International Journal of Osteoarchaeology 14: 190-200. DOI: 10.1002/oa.755
Smith PG and Moss AR. 1994. Epidemiology of tuberculosis. In Pathogenesis, Protection and Control., Bloom BR (ed.). ASM Press: Washington, DC; 47-59
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing.
The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
