About the journal

The Journal of Intelligent Materials Systems and Structures is an international peer reviewed journal that publishes the highest quality original research reporting the results of experimental or theoretical work on any aspect of intelligent materials systems and/or structures research also called smart structure, smart materials, active materials, adaptive structures and adaptive materials.
Each submitted article is assigned to an associate editor chosen according to the submitted paper's topic. The associate editor then sends the manuscript to 3 researchers who have expertise in the technical topic of the manuscript.
This reviewers names are not known to the author according to the single blind system. We encourage our reviewers to respond within 6 weeks of submission.
Impact Factor*: 1.177
Ranking: 104/212 in Materials Science, Multidisciplinary * Journal Citation Reports®, Thomson Reuters, released June 2010
Instructions to Authors
Submitting Papers to the Journal:
1. Electronic submission of the manuscript as a PDF or MS Word file attached to an email message sent to journals@vt.edu is the desired format for submission of papers. Otherwise, three double-spaced hard copies and one electronic version (on a 3.5 in. disk or CD using Microsoft Word in an IBM/PC format) should be submitted to:
Dan Inman,
Editor, Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures,
Dept. of Mechanical Engineering,
310 Durham Hall,
Mail Code 0261,
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University,
Blacksburg,
VA 25061, USA.
Revised manuscripts should be resubmitted in final print and electronic versions.
2. Centred title should be brief, followed by centred name, affiliation, address, country, and postal code (zip) of author(s). Indicate to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent, including a telephone number, fax number and e-mail address.
3. Include a 100-word abstract.
4. Include a list of key words and author biographies
5. A list of five potential reviewers should be submitted to the Editor at the time of manuscript submission [optional].
6. ILLUSTRATIONS
-Computer generated graphics. Any art that is sent electronically should be in .tif files, in 300 dpi resolution, for superior reproduction. Colour original should be saved as greyscale images.
-Line Drawings. Originals should always be submitted. Wherever possible, graphs should be boxed in, and scale divisions should be marked on the inside of the boxes. Grids should not be shown. Insofar as possible, explanations should be placed in the legend. Original drawings should not be larger than 20x25 cm (8x10 in); if this is impossible, they must be accompanied by two sets of small photoprints. Measurements should be indicated in SI units.
-Lettering should be planned for 50% reduction; text must be readable after reduction.
-Photographs. Photographs should be supplied as glossy prints, and wherever possible, of the same size as they are to appear in the journal. Illustrations should be referred to as Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. The name(s) of the author(s) should be written on all illustrations, as should the Figure number. The indication 'Top' must be given, if necessary. Besides the original illustrations, one duplicate set must accompany each copy of the manuscript; these copies may be photoprints, if clear and legible.
-Text must be readable after reduction.
7. JOURNAL AND BOOK REFERENCES should be identified in the text by author-date.
References, author-date, within text:
Last name of author and the year of publication of the work, separated by comma (Smith, 1798)
For works of multiple authorship use names for two or three authors:
(Clark and Lewis, 1989)
Clark and Lewis (1989)
(Byrnes, James, and Hoover, 1988)
Byrnes. James, and Hoover (1988)
In a reference to a work by two family members with the same last name, the name is repeated:
(Smith and Smith, 1980)
The plurals of the name may be used in the text when the reference is to the persons rather than the work:
The Smiths (1980) maintain that . . .
For more than three authors use the name of the first followed by 'et al.':
(Brown et al., 1960)
Brown et al. (1960)
Two or more references given together are separated by semicolons:
(Kim, 1983; Rogers and Liang, 1975; Wynne, 1977)
Several works by the same author are cited by date only and separated by commas; when page numbers are given, the references are separated by semi-colons and the name is repeated. References with the same author and year of publication should be distinguished in the text by appending a lowercase 'a' to the year of publication of the first cited, a letter 'b' to the second cited, and so on.
Rogers (1988a) discovered. . .
It was also noted (Rogers, 1988b) that. . .
(Brown, 1963a, 1963b, 1971)
Literature references should be listed alphabetically at the end of manuscript.
Author(s), date, 'title of article,' title of publication, volume, page, etc.

8. FIGURE, TABLE, EQUATION: spelled out in text, capitalized. Figure 1 Table 1 Equation (9)
9. TABLES. Number consecutively and type on a numbered, separate page.
Please use arabic numerals and supply a heading. Column headings should be explanatory and carry units (see example). Do not include vertical rules.
10. UNITS & ABBREVIATIONS. SI units should be used.
11. SYMBOLS. A list of symbols used and their meanings should be included if a
large number of symbols appears in the text.
12. PROOFREADING AND OFFPRINTS. Authors will receive page proofs, which
they should correct and return as soon as possible. An offprint order form for purchase of additional offprints will be provided. No free offprints can be provided; the correspondence author will receive one free copy of the journal for each contributor.
13. COPYRIGHT INFORMATION. All original journal articles are copyrighted in
the name of the publisher. All original articles accepted for publication must be accompanied by a signed copyright transfer agreement available from the journal editor or from the publisher's website. Previously copyrighted material may be published with the written permission of the copyright holder.
14. HEADINGS. Your article should be structured into sections. Normally two headings are used as follows:
Main Subhead: DESIGN OF A MICROWAVE INSTALLATION [all capital letters, centred]
Secondary Subhead: Principal of the Design Method [capitalize first letter of main words, left justified]
15. EQUATIONS. Number equations with arabic numbers enclosed in parentheses at the right-hand margin. Type superscripts and subscripts clearly above or below
the baseline, or mark them with a caret. Be sure that all symbols, letters, and numbers are distinguishable (e.g., 0 for zero, one or lowercase 'el', 'vee' or Greek nu).
16. PERMISSIONS. The author is responsible for obtaining releases from other publishers for Sage Publications to publish material copyrighted by someone else.
GENERAL
Neither Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, nor the editorial board or the publisher is responsible for the views expressed by individual contributors in articles published in the Journal.
