Instructions to Authors
Instructions to Authors
Statement of Purpose The Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology publishes original, peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of cardiovascular electrophysiology, including: (a) ion channels and biophysics; (b) molecular biology; (c) pharmacology; (d) cellular and in vivo electrophysiology; (e) clinical electrophysiology; and (f) catheter ablation.
All articles are sent for peer review. Articles from the Editor's institution are processed by a guest editor.
Author Guidelines JCE requires all manuscripts to be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jce. Complete, detailed instructions on uploading your manuscript are available on this web site. Any major word processing software, as well as both Windows-based and Macintosh operating systems, are acceptable to use.
The entire manuscript - including all corresponding figures and tables - should be submitted as one file, either in a PDF format or in any IBM-based word-processing program (preferably Microsoft Word).
Manuscript type should be double-spaced and prepared on an 8.5" x 11" paper size, with a minimum of 1-inch margins on all four sides. Pages should be numbered. All text should be formatted in a run-in style (do not use columns).
PLEASE NOTE: Manuscripts accepted for publication must be uploaded in an electronic format that is acceptable for print reproduction and typesetting purposes, in either a .doc or .txt file. Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems, and the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type. Corresponding figures need to be formatted as either TIFF, PDF, or EPS files. JPG, PPT, and PS files will not be accepted.
Authors should list a maximum of five suggested reviewers in the applicable field at the time of submission.
Please direct any questions to Eric N. Prystowsky, M.D., JCE, c/o The Care Group, 8333 Naab Road, Suite 400, Indianapolis, IN 46260, USA. Telephone: 317-338-6310; Telefax: 317-338-6246; E-mail: bprystow@thecaregroup.com.
Manuscript Content
Title Page Please include a brief and descriptive title of the article, as well as a short title of fewer than 50 characters; each author's full name, highest academic degree and hospital and academic affiliations; acknowledgement of ALL sources of financial support; and the name, address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the individual responsible for editorial correspondence and reprint requests.
Abstract (Page 1) Include a brief abstract (without references) of fewer than 250 words for major articles, 50-100 words for case reports. Divide the abstract into sections: Introduction (one or two sentences), Methods and Results, and a Conclusion that states the importance and potential implications of the observations. Avoid all abbreviations other than standard units of measurement and common abbreviations, such as RV, LV, etc. Use generic names of drugs.
Key Words The abstract should be followed by 5 to 10 key words suitable for indexing.
Text (Page 2) Organize into sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion, with appropriate subheadings to make the sections easily understood. Explain abbreviations at first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, and limit use only to a few commonly accepted words. References, tables, and figures should be cited in numerical order. Avoid jargon, clich¨¦s, and laboratory slang. References to pacemakers, defibrillators, and leads must adhere to code structures and usage conventions set forth by NASPE/BPEG code. Place acknowledgments at the end of the text, before references. Authors whose native language is not English are strongly advised to seek appropriate grammatical assistance. In general, manuscripts should not exceed 20 double-spaced typed pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, and 35 references.
References Include references to unpublished material or personal communications in the text in parentheses. Number all published references in the order in which they are cited in the text. Abbreviate titles of periodicals according to the style of Index Medicus, National Library of Medicine. List all authors in each reference following exactly the format and punctuation shown below; do NOT use "et al."
Journal Article - Example Pelargonio G, Fogel RI, Knilans TK, Prystowsky EN: Late occurrence of heart block after radiofrequency catheter ablation of the septal region: Clinical follow-up and outcome. J Cardiovasc Electrophysiol 2001; 12:56-60.
Chapter in Book with Different Author and Editor - Example Myerburg RJ, Mitrani R, Interian A, Castellanos A: Identification of risk of cardiac arrest and sudden death in athletes In Estes NAM, Salem DM, Wang PJ, eds: Sudden Cardiac Death in the Athlete. Armonk, NY: Futura Publishing Co., 1999, pp, 25-27.
Book with Identical Author and Editor - Example Klein GJ, Prystowsky EN: Clinical Electrophysiology Review. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1997, p. 83.
Figures/Illustrations Each figure must have a legend typed double-spaced on a separate page, explaining all abbreviations and symbols appearing in the illustration. Label each figure to match the corresponding number in the manuscript text and in the Figure Legend.
There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp.
Black and white illustrations are published without charge to the author. Arrangements for color reproductions must be made with the publisher before publication. Four-color illustrations are printed at a cost to the author of $500 (US) per figure. Written permission from publishers for any figure previously published should be provided with the original submission. Photographs in which a patient or other person is identifiable must have written permission from that person.
Tables Tables must be self-explanatory and supplement, not duplicate, the text. Number brief titles in Arabic numerals according to the order they are mentioned in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate page and designed for economy of space and readability. Notes designated in the tables and all abbreviations should be defined in a footnote. Abbreviations should be identified in alphabetical order. Footnote designations should be used in the following order: *, +, +, ¡ì.
Case Reports Case reports are limited to 4 authors and 8, double-spaced pages total - including text, 20 or fewer references, figures legends and a maximum of 4 figures.
Arrhythmia Rounds Submissions include case presentations, ECGs, intracardiac recordings, activation maps, intracellular action potentials, or other illustrative material that is used in the context of teaching concepts of diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias. Manuscripts are limited to 4, double-spaced typewritten pages and up to 3 illustrations.
EP Image
Limited to one, double-spaced, typewritten page and no more than 2 illustrations and 4 authors. Images will be judged based on their aesthetic quality and the scientific/clinical importance of the observation.
Techniques and Technology Content includes detailed descriptions of techniques in electrophysiology, ablation or device implantation, as well as reviews of new technology. Articles are mostly by invitation, but unsolicited submissions are welcome. Authors may contact Hugh Calkins, hcalkins@jhmi.edu, with their proposal prior to submission.
Letters to the Editor Correspondence should be submitted through http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jce. Letters should be typed double spaced, and should not exceed 500 words. Letters will be reviewed and are subject to editing. If accepted for publication, a copy of the letter will be sent to the author(s) of the original article, if applicable. The author(s) will have an opportunity to respond with new material that will be considered for publication with the letter.
Publication Authors whose manuscripts are accepted for publication must complete and return the Copyright Assignment and Conflict of Interest forms BEFORE the manuscript can be posted on JCE's web site or included in the printed version. Both of these forms can be printed off by visiting http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jce and clicking on the "Instructions and Forms" icon in the upper, right-hand corner of the screen. Original, signed documents should be mailed to the Editorial Office.
One Copyright Assignment form should be signed by all authors. If distance prohibits this, the form can be signed by the first author, who takes responsibility for informing the other authors of the copyright terms.
A separate Conflict of Interest Form must be signed by each author. JCE requires full disclosure of any and all financial or other relations as they relate to the authors and the data in the manuscript.
Authors of accepted manuscripts will be able to review their page proofs via an online posting site. Corresponding authors will be notified via e-mail when their page proofs are ready. Changes at the proofing stage are limited to typographical errors or errors in the presentation of data. These changes can be made only if the material is returned to the production editor within 24 hours after the page proofs have been posted.
Policies/Letter of Submission Manuscripts submitted must be original, with no portion under simultaneous consideration for publication elsewhere or previously published, except for an abstract of fewer than 400 words. Include only authors who have made an important contribution to the study and are thoroughly familiar with the primary data. All authors are responsible for the contents and must have read and approved the manuscript and conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals published in the Annals of Internal Medicine 1997; 126:36-47.
Studies involving experimental animals and humans must conform to the guiding principals of the Declaration of Helsinki, and human subjects must have given informed consent of a study that has been approved by the Institutional Committee on Human Research at the author's institution.
Please provide sex-specific data, when appropriate, in describing outcomes of epidemiologic analyses or clinical trials; or specifically state that no sex-based differences were present.
Any financial or other relations must be disclosed. (For more information on copyright and conflict of interest, see Publication section.)
Note: Letters of submission must include affirmation of all the information mentioned above.
Manuscripts inactive for more than one year will be considered withdrawn.
