About the journal
Heteroatom Chemistry is designed to bring together a broad, interdisciplinary group of chemists who work with compounds containing main-group elements of groups 13 through 17 of the Periodic Table and certain other related elements. The fundamental reactivity should, in all cases, be concentrated about the heteroatoms. It does not matter whether the compounds being studied are acyclic or cyclic; saturated or unsaturated; of a monomeric, polymeric or solid state nature; inorganic, organic or naturally occurring, so long as the heteroatom is playing an essential role. Also, both experimental articles and those based on computational chemistry are welcomed. In general, Heteratom Chemistry will not accept manuscripts based on classical heterocyclic chemistry (for which several special journals are available). It welcomes, however, interesting articles on heterocyclic systems beyond the scope of classical organic chemistry.
Instructions to Authors
Please supply:
- The final version of the manuscript in hard copy. The manuscript must contain original unpublished work and not be submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. Unless requested, submitted material will not be returned to the author.
- An electronic copy of the final version.
- A Copyright Transfer Agreement or Letter of Agreement (Jossey-Bass journals) with original signatures in ink. Without this, we are unable to accept your submission. Please be sure to send either of these documents with your manuscript.
- Permission Grants. If the manuscript contains extracts (including illustrations) from or is based in whole or in part on other copyrighted works (including, for the avoidance of doubt, material from online or Intranet sources), the Author, at the Author's expense and in the form specified by the Publisher, will obtain from the owners of the respective copyrights written permission to reproduce those extracts in the manuscript in all territories and editions and in all media of expression and languages, and in all derivative works. All necessary permission grants must be submitted with the manuscript to the editor. Without these, we are unable to accept the submission. When obtaining permission, our official Permission Request Form should always be used, as this is worded to include all of the rights which we require.
Manuscript Style
All submissions, including book reviews, must have a title; be printed on one side of the paper; be in plain, double-spaced type; and have a margin of 1 inch (3cm) all around. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate pages and not be incorporated into the text. Please ensure that captions and, if appropriate, accurate acknowledgements, are provided for all figures and tables.
- The title page must list the full title, along with the short title and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone, and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs. Please remember to include a short title for your manuscript, to be used as a running head if needed.
- Include the names of any sponsors of the research contained in the manuscript, along with grant numbers.
- Supply an abstract where required. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole article, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the article. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Please ensure that all references in the reference list are cited in the text and vice versa. Reference styles for individual journals vary. Please refer to the journal's home page under "Instructions to Authors" for the appropriate style.
- Please include a hard copy of all figures and tables, ensuring that each is called out in the text. Where possible, please enclose an electronic copy as well.
Text Style
Format the text in plain, double-spaced type, flush left, using regular uppercase and lowercase letters. Separate each sentence with one space only and each paragraph with one return (the "Enter" key). Use standard level headings where appropriate (see Headings section below). Type your text as one long, continuous page without page breaks. Within the text you may use boldface, italics, superscripts, and subscripts, but do not attach these attributes to headings. Use your word processor's special character function to insert Greek characters and mathematical symbols that do not appear on a standard keyboard.
Headings
Section and paragraph headings within the text should be typed so that each level is clearly differentiated from the rest. There are typically four levels of headings used.
A sample journal may, for example, have the following headings:
- LEVEL-1 HEADING: all capital letters, boldface
- Level-2 heading: plain text, initial capital letter
- Level-3 heading: italic
- Level-4 heading. Italic, followed by a period, run into the text
Numbered heads are acceptable but are not used in all journals and may have to be altered to match the style of the individual journal.
Lists
Lists should be preceded and followed by a blank line. Each item in a list should be followed by a return (press "Enter"). Bulleted and numbered lists are both acceptable. List items should end with a punctuation mark only if the item is a complete sentence.
Tables
Tables should be formatted as simply as possible so that the information is clear and the structure of the table can be easily interpreted. Place the tables at the end of the manuscript file and note within the text where each table should appear [Table 1 to appear here]. You may use your word processor's table editor to create tables, but the format of tables may be altered by the typesetter to conform to the individual style of the journal without affecting the content. (See sample tables in the printed version of the journal to which you are submitting for style.)
Equations
Equations may appear within the text or on a separate line. You may use an equation editor to create equations and insert them into your file. Please note that the typesetter may have to retype complex equations and that they need to be carefully read in the proof stage (see Correcting Your Proofs ).
Footnotes
Do not use your word processor's automated footnote or endnote feature. Footnotes should appear in a list at the end of the file with a number or a symbol that refers to a corresponding number or symbol typed in the text.
References
Reference styles for individual journals vary. Please refer to the journal's home page under "Instructions to Authors" for the appropriate style.
