About the journal

Psychological Assessment is concerned mainly with empirical research on measurement and evaluation relevant to the broad field of clinical psychology. Submissions are welcome in the areas of assessment processes and methods. Included are clinical judgment and the application of decision-making models; paradigms derived from basic psychological research in cognition, personality¨Csocial psychology, and biological psychology; and development, validation, and application of assessment instruments, observational methods, and interviews.
The focus of the journal is the diagnosis and evaluation of psychological characteristics or processes and assessment of the effectiveness of interventions. Assessment of personality, psychopathological symptoms, cognitive and neuropsychological processes, and interpersonal behavior are all relevant. Methodological, theoretical, and review articles addressing clinical assessment processes and methods will also be considered. Case studies will be considered if they make unique contributions to clinical psychological assessment. Papers that focus on measurement theory and methods will be considered if specifically focused on issues in clinical assessment.

Masked Review
This journal has adopted a masked review policy for all submissions. Authors should make every effort to ensure that the manuscript itself contains no clues to their identities. Authors' names and affiliations should not appear in the manuscript. Instead, please include this information in just the cover letter.
Preparing Manuscripts
Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). Manuscripts may be copyedited for bias-free language (see chap. 2 of the Manual). Formatting instructions (all copy must be double-spaced) and instructions on preparing tables, figures, references, metrics, and abstracts appear in the Manual. See APA's Checklist for Manuscript Submission.
References
References should be listed in alphabetical order. Each listed reference should be cited in text, and each text citation should be listed in the References. Basic formats are as follows:
Mellor, D. (2004). Furthering the use of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire: Reliability with younger child respondents. Psychological Assessment, 16, 396¨C401.
Beck, C. A. J., & Sales, B. D. (2001). Family mediation: Facts, myths, and future prospects. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.
Bjork, R. A. (1989). Retrieval inhibition as an adaptive mechanism in human memory. In H. L. L. Roediger III & F. I. M. Craik (Eds.), Varieties of memory & consciousness (pp. 309¨C330). Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum.
Figures
Graphics files are welcome if supplied as Tiff, EPS, or PowerPoint. High-quality printouts or glossies are needed for all figures. The minimum line weight for line art is 0.5 point for optimal printing. When possible, please place symbol legends below the figure image instead of to the side. Original color figures can be printed in color at the editor's and publisher's discretion provided the author agrees to pay $255 for one figure, $425 for two figures, $575 for three figures, $675 for four figures, and $55 for each additional figure.
Supplemental Materials
APA can now place supplementary materials online, which will be available via the journal's Web page. To submit such materials, please see Supplementing Your Article With Online Material for details.
Permissions
Authors are required to obtain and provide to the editor on final acceptance all necessary permissions to reproduce in print and electronic form any copyrighted work, including, for example, test materials (or portions thereof) and photographs of people.
Abstracts and Keywords
Manuscripts of regular articles must be accompanied by an abstract containing a maximum of 125¨C180 words. After the abstract, please supply up to five keywords or brief phrases. Manuscripts of Brief Reports must be accompanied by an abstract of 75 to 100 words. All abstracts must be typed on a separate page.
Brief Reports
Psychological Assessment will review Brief Reports of research studies in clinical assessment. The procedure is intended to permit the publication of carefully designed studies with a narrow focus or of specialized interest.
An author who submits a Brief Report must agree not to submit the full report to another journal of general circulation. The Brief Report should give a clear, condensed summary of the procedure of the study and as full an account of the results as space permits. Brief Reports should be limited to three printed pages and prepared according to the following specifications.
To ensure that a Brief Report does not exceed three printed pages, follow these instructions for typing: set the character/space limit at 90 characters per line and do not exceed 270 lines for text plus references. These limits do not include the title page, abstract, author note, or footnotes. The number of tables and figures should be limited. The author is encouraged to limit the number of headings within the Brief Report and to combine headings whenever possible. For example, the Results and Discussion sections can be combined. Also, subheadings under the Method section can often be omitted.
Authors are encouraged but not required to have available an extended report. If one is available, the Author Note of the Brief Report should include the following statement:
Correspondence concerning this article (and requests for an extended report of this study) should be addressed to [give the author's full name and address].
Publication Policies
APA policy prohibits an author from submitting the same manuscript for concurrent consideration by two or more publications. APA's policy regarding posting articles on the Internet may be found at Posting Articles on the Internet. In addition, it is a violation of APA Ethical Principles to publish "as original data, data that have been previously published" (Standard 8.13). As this journal is a primary journal that publishes original material only, APA policy prohibits publication of any manuscript that has been published in whole or substantial part elsewhere. Authors have an obligation to inform the Editor about prior publication of any data upon which their article depends. In addition, APA Ethical Principles specify that "after research results are published, psychologists do not withhold the data on which their conclusions are based from other competent professionals who seek to verify the substantive claims through reanalysis and who intend to use such data only for that purpose, provided that the confidentiality of the participants can be protected and unless legal rights concerning proprietary data preclude their release" (Standard 8.14). APA expects authors submitting to this journal to adhere to these standards. Specifically, authors of manuscripts submitted to APA journals are expected to have available their data throughout the editorial review process and for at least 5 years after the date of publication. APA expects authors submitting to this journal to adhere to these and other standards outlined in the Manual.
Authors will be required to state in writing that they have complied with APA ethical standards in the treatment of their sample, human or animal, or to describe the details of treatment. A copy of the APA Ethical Principles may be obtained from the APA Ethics Office web site or by writing the APA Ethics Office, 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4242. Authors of accepted manuscripts will be required to transfer copyright to APA.
APA requires authors to reveal any possible conflict of interest in the conduct and reporting of research (e.g., financial interests in a test or procedure, funding by pharmaceutical companies for drug research).
Preparing Files for Production
If your manuscript is accepted for publication, please follow the guidelines for file formats and naming provided at Preparing Your Accepted Manuscript for Production. If your manuscript was mask reviewed, please ensure that the final version for production includes a byline and full author note for typesetting.
