Instructions to Authors

Australasian Psychiatry is the bi-monthly Journal of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) that aims to promote the art of psychiatry and its maintenance of excellence in practice. The journal is peerreviewed and accepts submissions, presented as original research; reviews; descriptions of innovative services; comments on policy, history, politics, economics, training, ethics and the Arts as they relate to mental health and mental health services; statements of opinion; case reports and letters. Book reviews are commissioned by the Editor. A section of the journal provides information on RANZCP business and related matters. Articles are accepted on the understanding that they are not under consideration by another publication.

Manuscripts should be created in Microsoft Word and submitted using the journal’s electronic submission system found at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/iapy. Further instructions are available at the website. If you require assistance submitting your article, please contact the Editorial Offie, email: iapy@informa.com ; tel:+46-8-440 80 51; fax: +46-8-440 80 50.

Authors should declare any financial support or relationships that may pose a conflict of interest by disclosing at the time of submission any financial arrangements they have with a company whose product figures prominently in the submitted manuscript or with a company making a competing product. Such information will be held in confidence while the paper is under review and will not influence the editorial decision but, if the article is accepted for publication, the Editor will usually discuss with the authors the manner in which such information is to be communicated to the reader.

We will ask authors to sign a Disclosure form to be uploaded with together with the manuscript files during the submission process. The template for this document can be found with this link.

Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication, providing that prior permission is obtained from Informa Healthcare. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources. To view ‘Copyright Transfer Frequently Asked Questions’, please visit
http://informahealthcare.com/page/resources/authors. Articles cannot be published until a signed copyright assignment form has been received.

The copyright assignment should be signed by the corresponding author and uploaded together with the manuscript files during the submission process. The template copyright form could be found with this link.

Maximum Lengths: The maximum length of articles should, in general, not exceed 2000 words (including abstract and references), although longer articles might be published at the Editor’s discretion.

Title page: The title of the paper should not exceed two lines. The title page should also include the full names, qualifications, affiliations and position titles of all authors, and a contact address, telephone number, fax number and email address for the corresponding author. Please note that the title page must be a part of the main manuscript file that you upload online, but that parts of the data should also be registered in the submission form.

Structured abstracts (i.e. Summary): A summary of the paper must be in the form of a structured abstract (maximum of 200 words) using the following headings: Objective, Method, Results and Conclusions. In the case of articles that are primarily opinion pieces, the abstract should have the headings Objective and Conclusions. This Abstract/Summary MUST be included in the main manuscript file, after the title page but before the key words and the main text.

Key words: Up to five key words should be provided after the Conclusions section of the abstract. These key words MUST me included in the main manuscript file uploaded for consideration. They should be placed after the abstract but before the main text starts.

Case reports or case material: Where case descriptions are included, patient confidentiality must be strictly observed. Authors must confirm, in the accompanying letter to the Editor and in the article, that all identifying information has been removed/altered.

Pejorative language: Do not use pejorative labels like ‘schizophrenics’, ‘psychotics’ and ‘neurotics’. Instead refer to ‘patients with schizophrenia’, etc.

Abbreviations:
Abbreviations should in general be avoided. However, phrases may be abbreviated if their shortened form is widely known and they are used repeatedly (e.g. CNS, CSF, MAOI). When first used in the text, they must be spelt out in full followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.

References: In the main text, references should be identified by consecutive superscript Arabic numerals, e.g.:

“This finding was first reported by Smith,(1) although subsequent workers(2–7) have failed to replicate it.”

Number the references in the order in which they occur in the text. However, once a reference is cited, all subsequent citations should refer to the original number.

At the end of the paper, list references in consecutive numerical order (not alphabetically). Cite the names of all authors when there are six or fewer; when there are seven or more, list the first three followed by et al.

Unpublished data and personal communications should not be listed as references, but may be referred to in the main text as: (Brown J, unpubl. data, 2006) or (Smith J, pers. comm., 2005). Articles accepted for publication may be placed in the reference list with the

Reference style
Journal article
1. Mellsop G, Wilson J. Outcome measures in mental health services: Humpty Dumpty is alive and well. Australasian Psychiatry 2006; 14: 137–140. (DO NOT INCLUDE ISSUE NUMBER.)

Please note also: All journal titles must be quoted in full (no abbrevations); punctuation of the year, volume number and page numbers must be precisely in accordance with the previous examples; no part of any reference is to be underlined. When referring to books, the city in which the book was published and the publisher’s name must be stated; the words Company, Co., Limited, Pty Ltd, Inc., etc. are not to be included.

It is essential that authors conform strictly to this style. Papers with nonconforming reference style will be returned and will not be considered for publication until the paper in the correct format is resubmitted.

Tables: Tables should be consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals with each table presented on a separate page at the end of the article.

Figures: All illustrations (line drawings and photographs) are classified as figures. Figures should be cited in consecutive order in the text. Figures should be sized to fit within the column (82 mm) and submitted, preferably, at final size.

Line figures should be supplied as sharp, black and white graphs or diagrams, drawn professionally or with a computer graphics package. After reduction, the size of the capital letters should be about 2 mm. Allowance should be made for lines and text becoming smaller and thinner on reduction.

Electronic files of all figures are essential and the file formats EPS (encapsulated postscript) and TIFF (tagged image file) are recommended: files must be supplied at a resolution of at least 300 d.p.i. at full size. Figures should be saved individually and separate to the text.

Formatting: There should be no more than three levels of headings. Do not indent the first sentence of paragraphs. A single space only should be placed between a full stop and the beginning of the next sentence in a paragraph. Do not use enforced page breaks or any other enforced spacing apart from paragraph marks, and use only single paragraph marks between paragraphs.

Acknowledgements and Disclosure of commercial interests.
Acknowledgments section
The Acknowledgments section can detail special thanks, personal assistance and dedications. Contributions from individuals who do not qualify for authorship should also be acknowledged here. Any acknowledgments authors wish to make should be included in a separate headed section at the end of the manuscript preceding any appendices, and before the references section. The Acknowledgments section should not include any conflict of interest or sources of funding statement – instead this information should be stated separately under the Declaration of Interest section.

Declaration of Interest section
It is the policy of Informa Healthcare journals to adhere in principle to the Conflict of Interest policy recommended by the ICMJE. All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. It is the sole responsibility of authors to disclose any affiliation with any organization with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (such as consultancies, employment, paid expert testimony, honoraria, speakers bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership, patents or patent applications or travel grants) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. All sources of funding for research are to be explicitly stated. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure.

All declarations of interest must be outlined under the subheading “Declaration of interest”. If there are no declarations, authors should still explicitly state that there are none. We would like to suggest the following wording to be used for such occations: 'Declaration of interest:  The authors report no conflicts of interest. The authors alone are responsible for the content and writing of the paper.' This section should be added into the main manuscript file, after the main text, but before the references.

The ‘Declaration of Interest’ and ‘Acknowledgements’ sections will be made available to reviewers and will appear in the published article. Please note that the Editor(s) or Publisher can make or suggest changes to these statements where necessary.

The intent of this policy is not to prevent authors with these relationships from publishing work, but rather to adopt transparency such that readers can make objective judgments on conclusions drawn.

For more details on the international policy for Acknowledgements and/or Disclosure, please see the website of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE):

Proofs: It is essential that the corresponding author supply an email address to which correspondence can be emailed while their article is in production. Notification of the URL from where to download a PDF typeset page proof, associated forms and further instructions will sent by email to the corresponding author. The purpose of the PDF proof is a final check of the layout, tables and figures. Alterations other than the essential correction of errors are unacceptable at PDF proof stage. The proof should be checked and approval to publish the article should be emailed to the Publisher by the date indicated; otherwise, it may be signed off by the Editor or held over to the next issue.

Reprints: Corresponding authors can receive a pdf of their article for archiving which can be printed in up to 50 copies. So called 'Offprints' (which are referring to a printed version of your article on the same paper as the printed journal) are available for purchase to a reduced price through Rightslink® when proofs are received. More information on how to order will follow via e-mail. If you have any queries or would like to order bigger quantities of your article for print, please contact our reprints department via email: reprints@informa.com.
