The Rangeland Journal
The Rangeland Journal publishes papers of scientific merit for a readership of scientists, educators, managers and users. Contributions may be on any aspect of the ecology, use. management or conservation of rangelands, either within Australia or internationally.
Papers may present the results of original research, contributions to theory or management, or new conclusions reached from the review of a topic. Their structure need not conform to that of standard scientific articles but writing style must be clear and concise. Papers describing management practice are acceptable where that practice is well documented, scientifically analysed and objectively presented.
All authors are expected to have their papers peer-reviewed before submission, both for scientific content and for correctness in presentation of text, references and illustrations. Submitted papers that do not conform with the editorial requirements given below may be returned without consideration. |

Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts
Three copies of the manuscript each accompanied by copies of all illustrations should be sent to the Editor, Dr R.D.B. Whalley, Botany, University of New England, Armidale, N.S.W., 2351, Australia. Papers should be typed in double spacing on one side of the paper only with a margin of at least 4 cm on the left hand side. All pages should be numbered consecutively, including the bibliography, figure captions and tables.
The Journal requires electronic copies of all accepted manuscripts. Either Apple Macintosh or DOS (IBM compatible) disks or CDs as well as email copies are acceptable. All figures should be in separate files from the text.
Title
The title should be short and informative and should contain the key words used in the text; a short running title should also be provided.
Abstract
A brief and informative abstract should be provided. It should not exceed 300 words and should be suitable for direct use by abstracting journals.
Key words
Up to six key words selected from the CAB Thesaurus (or an equivalent reference volume) should be listed at the end of the Abstract.
Botanical names
Authorities should be quoted at first mention. Alternatively a reference can be given to the nomenclature being followed.
Animal experimentation ethics
Where an experiment has involved the use of captive animals, the animal experimentation ethics committee approval number should be given in the acknowledgements.
Headings
The hierarchy of headings is: upper and lower case left flush; upper and lower case italic left flush; upper and lower case italic indented; and upper and lower case italic on the same line as the text. Only words to be set in italics should be underlined. It would be helpful if authors could indicate the weight of heading by use of ringed capital letters in the margin; that is A for first order; B for second order and so on.
Abbreviations
SI units should be used throughout; Imperial equivalents are not required. Numbers referring to units of measurement (e.g. 10 mm) are never spelt out; if it does not refer to a unit of measurement then numbers under ten are spelt out. Figure is abbreviated to Fig. both in the text and figure captions, except when it is the first word of a sentence.
Tables
These must be self explanatory, typed on separate sheets, numbered consecutively and carry an appropriate title. The same material should not be presented in both tabular and graphical form. If material can be presented in either form then the graphical form is preferred. Vertical rulings should not be used in tables. ....continued inside back cover
A table of mean yields should always present an estimate of the variation, usually the standard error of the mean (S.E.M.) or the standard error of difference between two means (S.E.D.). Please ensure that tabs are used in tables not spaces.
Figures
Authors with facilities for lettering illustrations to a standard suitable for direct reproduction should submit lettered drawings and lettered and mounted photographs. Authors who do not have such facilities should submit unlettered originals. The Production Manager may be consulted for further guidance.
Line drawings
Original line drawings must be drawn in black ink on white board or on drawing or tracing paper, and with regard to the size of the Journal column (13.5 x 21 cm).
Lettering should be of a sanserif type (Helvetica preferred) and should be about 10 point (the Journal's text is set in 10 point) after reduction to final size for reproduction.
Good quality, computer generated graphs are acceptable but please follow the above guidelines regarding lettering. Remember if you are submitting computer generated graphics they must be in a separate document from your text and tables.
Photographs
These will be accepted only if they make a definite contribution to the value of the paper. They should be good quality unmounted glossy prints and be lightly numbered in pencil on the reverse side. Colour photographs can be reproduced but the full additional cost must be met by the author(s).
References
In the text a reference should be cited by the author's name and date. Where there are three or more authors the first author's name is given followed by et al. An alphabetical list of references should be provided at the end of the text giving surnames of authors, initials, year of publication (in parentheses), title of paper, name of journal (in full), volume number and first and last page numbers. (The Production Manager will abbreviate journal titles before publication). Authors should check the most recent issue of the Journal to familiarise themselves with the conventions used for citing references to books, periodicals and other literature.
Proofs
These will be sent to authors to enable them to check for the correctness of the typesetting. Alterations made due to amendments of the author's original copy may be charged to the author.
Page charges
Non-members are charged $100 for papers up to 12 printed pages with an additional charge of $8 per page for each additional page. Page charges do not apply to members of the Australian Rangeland Society.
Offprints
Authors can order offprints on the appropriate form sent with the proofs.
