About the journal
|
Biocatalysis and Biotransformation is an international journal covering the application, both actual and potential, of biological catalysts (including whole cells or isolated components thereof, natural and modified enzymes and catalytic antibodies) for the synthesis, interconversion or degradation of chemical species. In addition to papers describing the synthetic applications of biotransformations the journal particularly welcomes papers focusing on the mechanistic principles, kinetics and thermodynamics of biocatalytic processes, the chemical or genetic modification of biocatalysts and the activity and stability of biocatalysts in non-aqueous and multi- phasic environments, including the design of large scale biocatalytic processes. The scope of the journal also encompasses biomimetic systems and environmental applications of biocatalysis where the mechanistic principles are understood or novel biocatalytic activities are involved.
Regular issues of the journal publish full length refereed research papers and invited review articles in topical areas. Short communications in areas such as the application of biotransformations in chemical synthesis or preliminary reports of novel catalytic activities are also welcomed.

Instructions to Authors
Biocatalysis and Biotransformation publishes regular papers, short communications, and unsolicited Reviews covering the application, both actual and potential, of biological catalysts (including whole cells or isolated components thereof, natural and modified enzymes and catalytic antibodies) for the synthesis, interconversion or degradation of chemical species. In addition to papers describing the synthetic applications of biotransformations the journal particularly welcomes papers focusing on more fundamental aspects, such as the mechanistic principles, kinetics and thermodynamics of biocatalytic processes, the chemical or genetic modification of biocatalysts and the activity and stability of biocatalysts in non-aqueous and multi- phasic environments, including the design of large scale biocatalytic processes. The scope of the journal also encompasses biomimetic systems and environmental applications of biocatalysis where the mechanistic principles are understood or novel biocatalytic activities are involved.
Manuscripts. All manuscripts should be submitted to Antonio Ballesteros, Executive Editor, Department of Biocatalysis, CSIC Institute of Catalysis, Campus Cantoblanco, 28049 Madrid, Spain (Fax: + 34 91 585 4760/4763; Email: aballesteros@icp.csic.es ), or to David Leak, Managing Editor, Biochemistry Building, Department of Biological Sciences, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London SW7 2AY, UK (Fax: + 44 (0) 207 594 5207). Manuscripts (Including Figures) should preferably be sent electronically in Word format (or preferably in pdf format converted from Word doc); if you choose to send by mail, three paper copies are necessary. Contributors should note that material submitted to the journal must be original, must not have already appeared in another publication and must not be submitted for publication elsewhere while under consideration by the journal.
Upon notification of acceptance by the Editor-in-chief, You will be required to submit a hard copy of the manuscript, Along with a version saved to disk (For Acceptable Format See "Disk Submission" Below).
Please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.
Format and Presentation. Papers should be written concisely in English and should be double spaced throughout. Measurements should be expressed in metric SI units as dictated by Quantities, Units and Symbols, published by the Royal Society, London. Nomenclature should follow the recommendations of the American Chemical Society and the International Unions of Biochemistry and Biology. Drugs mentioned by their trade name should be identified by their proper name. Enzyme and co-enzyme nomenclature should follow IUB recommendations, as found in Enzyme Nomenclature 1992 (Academic Press).
Title page The title of the paper and the author(s) name(s) should appear at the beginning of the paper. All pages of the manuscript must be numbered. All manuscripts should include full correspondence details (street address, telephone, fax and email addresses) of the corresponding author.
Abstract Each paper requires an abstract of 100-150 words summarizing the significant coverage and findings. There should also be up to six indexing key words.
Tables and figures. Tables must be typed on separate sheets and not included at part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered and typed on a separate sheet. Tables should be numbered by Roman numerals and figures by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the paper. Please supply clear copies of artwork (preferably the originals) for figures in a finished format suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher. The author(s) must arrange permission for the reproduction of illustrations and tables within articles. A limited number of colour plates may be published in each issue but, due to the costs of colour reproduction, the publisher reserves the right to reproduce colour figures in black and white, where colour reproduction is not deemed to be essential
The journal has a limited number of free colour pages within its annual page allowance. Authors should consult the editorial office with respect to colour reproduction at submission stage. Any figure submitted as a colour original may appear in a colour within the journal's online edition. Colour reproduction in excess of the journals budget will only be considered on condition that authors contribute to the associated costs.
References. References should be indicated in the text in the Harvard style. The full list should be collected and typed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. References should be complete in all details and follow the style below for a journal article (Mitra et al., 1999), book (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985) or book chapter (Smith et al., 1988). Note that the abbreviated titles of journals should be given.
Disk submissions. Authors should send the final, revised version of their article in both hard copy (paper) and electronic (disk) forms. Figures may be sent electronically, preferably in either TIFF (tagged image format) or EPS (encapsulated Postscript) formats. However, we can also accept PICT or JPEG formats. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly match the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final accepted version with the disk to the Managing Editor. Save all files on a standard 3.5-inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word (PC format), but can translate from most other common word-processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".
Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.
Copyright. It is a condition that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may use their article elsewhere after publication provided that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis Ltd. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
