Electronic Submission: Manuscripts submitted to either the Munich or College Station offices should be sent as a single Word file (PC version) including the figures which must be placed at the end on separate pages, one figure per page. To avoid confusion, other formats will not be accepted at this stage. The manuscript may be e-mailed to jvr@physiol.med.uni-muenchen.de or jvr@tamu.edu as an attached file or by post on a diskette. In any event, two printed copies should also be submitted by post. Please see also JVR E-Mail and Disk Submission Guidelines for more details.
Paper Submission: Manuscripts, including photocopies of line drawings, should be submitted in quadruplicate, typewritten double-spaced on one side of the paper, 10 characters per inch, with a margin not less than 25 mm on each side. Two photographs of linedrawings and four copies of micrographs should be supplied on glossy paper.

 Conditions
All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.
Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication.
Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of Journal of Vascular Research and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher.
It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

 Arrangement of Research Papers
Manuscript organization: Manuscripts should include, in sequence and on separate pages: title and authors, address, running title and acknowledgment of support; abstract and key words; introduction; methods; results; discussion; acknowledgments; references; tables; figures. The normal maximum length is 10 printed pages (including tables, illustrations and references), one printed page containing 6,460 letters, spaces included.
Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head.
Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.
Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 3¨C10 key words in English is essential. Consult previous numbers of Journal of Vascular Research for suitable entries.
Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 200 words.
Style: All measurements should normally be in SI units. Blood pressure may be given in mm Hg. Use generic names of drugs. Avoid jargon, euphemisms and abbreviations.
Footnotes: Acknowledgment of support is printed as a footnote to the title. Other footnotes should be avoided. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page.
Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 180 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author’s name, and ‘top?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800?200 dpi.

 Color Illustrations
Up to 6 color illustrations per page can be integrated within the text at the special price of CHF 660.?USD 545.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author’s expense. Where an author is unable to pay these charges, they may be waived at the discretion of the Editors.

 References
In the text identify references by Arabic numerals [in square brackets]. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be noted as ¡®unpublished data¡¯ and not be included in the reference list. The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. Do not alphabetize; number references in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text.
The surnames of the authors followed by initials should be given. There should be no punctuation other than a comma to separate the authors. Preferably, please cite all authors.
Abbreviate journal names according to the Index Medicus system. (Also see International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. N Engl J Med 1997;336:309¨C315.)
Digital Object Identifier (DOI) S. Karger Publishers supports DOIs as unique identifiers for articles. A DOI number will be printed on the title page of each article. DOIs can be useful in the future for identifying and citing articles published online without volume or issue information. More information can be found at www.doi.org

Rapid Communications, Reviews, Correspondence and Commentaries
Manuscripts intended for a rapid communication must present new findings of sufficient importance to justify their accelerated acceptance. They should follow the normal arrangement of research papers, including an abstract not exceeding 150 words. Rapid communications should not be more than four printed pages in length (including figures, tables and references). Rapid communications can only be accepted as they are or with minor modifications. Rejected manuscripts can only be reconsidered as regular papers. Review will be rapid, and once accepted, the paper will be included in the next planned issue.
Reviews: Reviews concerned with topics in vascular research of current interest will be welcomed. Potential authors are asked to check first with the Editors to avoid clashes with other pending reviews. All reviews will be subjected to normal critical peer refereeing.
Correspondence: Letters to the Editor concerning articles published in Journal of Vascular Research may be submitted for publication. If accepted, the authors of the articles concerned will be given the opportunity to reply.
Commentary: Comments concerning current topics of interest in vascular science will be considered for publication by the Editors. They should not be more than one printed page.

 Page Charges
Authors are charged CHF 75.¨C / USD 53.00 per printed page. 1 printed page is equal to approximately 2 manuscript pages.

 Galley Proofs
Unless indicated otherwise, galley proofs are sent to the first-named author and should be returned with the least possible delay.
Alterations made in galley proofs, other than the correction of printer's errors, are charged to the author. No page proofs are supplied.

 Reprints
Order forms and a price list are sent with the galley proofs. Orders submitted after the issue is printed are subject to considerably higher prices.

The printout of your manuscript must be double-spaced and must match the file on disk exactly.

 Disk Submission of Final Version
Following acceptance for publication, authors will be requested to provide a disk (specifications) with the final version of the manuscript. For this final version, preferably the text should be saved as a Word file, while figures should be in PowerPoint, both PC versions.
It is essential that authors carefully check the text and figuers for typographical errors, and follow the guidelines below. Otherwise delays in publication result.
Text and illustrations should be saved as separate files.
The disk must be accompanied by two copies of the printout (text and figures) and a statement from the authors that this version is exactly the same as that which has been accepted.

 Disk Format
 For text only, use:
- 3.5 inch disk
MS-Word format is preferred, Macintosh-OS format is acceptable For text and illustrations, use:
- CD-ROM (DOS or hybrid)
- Iomega Zip/DOS (100 MB/250 MB)
Please store only data pertinent to the manuscript you are submitting.

 Data Description
Please always label and accompany your disk with the following information:
- the title of the journal (i.e. Journal of Vascular Research) for which it is submitted
- a short version of the paper's title
- your name, postal and e-mail address, fax and telephone number
- hard and software used, including the version
- the complete list of the file names
All file names should consist of 8 characters before the dot identifying the file and 3 characters after the dot identifying the application (FILENAME.APP).

 Copy Editing
All manuscripts accepted for publication by Karger are subject to copy editing. Changes introduced by the copy editor and / or questions will be marked in the manuscript/printout so please be sure to check the galleys against the manuscript.
The copy edited manuscript and your disk will be returned to you along with the galley proofs.

Do's and Don'ts of Text Formatting
Apart from the general rules on style and arrangement as set out in the Guidelines for Authors please note the following:
- Do not use any special page layout or worry about unsightly line and page breaks.
- Enter your text continuously flush left. Do not use hard returns ('enter') within a paragraph, only at its end.
- Do not justify.
- Do not use footer and header functions.
- Do not split words at the end of a line.
- Do not use indentations anywhere in your manuscript, including the references.
Mark the beginning of a paragraph by inserting an extra blank line, i.e. use two hard returns ('enter') to mark the end of a paragraph.
- You may use the automatic page numbering function.
- Headings should be arranged left. Do not center headings, space them or set them in uppercase.
- Use the same style for headings of the same ranking throughout the text.
- You may use boldface and italics as well as sub- and superscript where appropriate.
- Use block letters (UPPERCASE) only for abbreviation.
Do not s p a c e individual words for emphasis.
- Insert one ¨C and only one ¨C space after each punctuation mark, e.g. at the end of a sentence and with reference numbers, i.e. [22, 27, 35].
- Distinguish hyphen and dash as follows:
 |
| hyphen |
|
high-resolution |
| en-dash |
|
1890¨C1990 |
| em-dash |
|
the incident ¨C as responses showed ¨C was perceived... |
| minus sign |
|
at a temperature of ¨C75¡ã |
 |
- Use your word-processing program to insert Greek letters and mathematical symbols etc. whenever possible and make sure they are correctly represented in your printout.

 Tables
- Tables are part of the text. Place them at the end of the text.
- A table consists of heading, head and body and, if necessary, footnotes. Use a line to separate the individual parts.
- Do not use spaces in tables, use the tabulator.
- Within tables, format operation data (e.g. 15.1 ?7.23) on one line in the same column.
- Do not use boldface or screens in tables.

 Legends
The legends to your figures are part of the text and should be listed after the tables.

 Illustrations
If your data does not correspond with the following guidelines it may be much more economical for us to use the original/print for traditional reproduction.
Always include two sets of originals/prints when submitting digital images.
Illustration data must be stored as separate files for the final version. Do not incorporate your figures into your text.

 Line Drawings
- Use PowerPoint to generate drawings.
- When preparing your line drawing, make sure the size of the drawing corresponds to its importance and complexity, and that the size and weight of all elements are balanced.
- Keep in mind that it may have to be scaled down: Do not use 'hairlines', minute type or very fine details. Screens should be used sparingly. Fine background screens should not be used.
- Save your line drawings as separate files, not embedded in the text.

Black and White Half-Tone and Color Images
- For processing and retouching scanned half-tone images, use Photoshop or similar software.
Please save the original scan as well as your processed version.
- Export black and white half-tones or color images in PowerPoint format, as close as possible to their anticipated size in print.
- Save the half tones as separate files, not embedded in the text.

 Scans
- Scanned line drawings must be digitalized with a resolution of at least 800, better 1000 or more dpi (dots per inch) after scaling.
- Scanned half-tone images should be digitalized with a final resolution of 300 dpi, a 14 bit grayscale accuracy and a density range of 3.3.
- Scanned color illustrations must be digitalized in RGB mode with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, a 14 bit accuracy and a density range of 3.3.
