About the journal

Molecules and Cells

Molecules and Cells is an international journal devoted to the advancement and dissemination of fundamental knowledge concerning the molecular biology of cells. It is published bimonthly and is the official publication of the Korean Society for Molecular Biology (KSMB). Papers on a broad range of topics of general interest to molecular and cell biologists are published. Submitted manuscripts are written in English.

This journal is indexed in:
Science Citation Index, Current Contents/Life Sciences, Scisearch, Research Alert, Index Medicus.

Instructions to Authors

A. General Information

Submit three complete copies of the manuscript written in English directly to:
The Korean Society for Molecular Biology
Korea Science and Technology Center, Rm. 815
635-4. Yeogsam-dong, Kangnam-gu, Seoul 135-703, Korea

In an accompanying cover letter, state the name of the journal, Molecules and Cells, and the address, telephone and fascimile numbers, and email address of the corresponding author. If the paper is a resubmission, the former manuscript number and the year of its submission should also be included. Accepted manuscript will be published with the understanding that the authors have approved the final manuscript and will pay a page charge. As a condition of publication, authors must transfer copyright to Springer-Verlag.

B. Organization of Manuscript

Suggested organization:
(a) Abstract (250 words or less)
(b) Introduction
(c) Materials and Methods
(d) Results
(e) Discussion
(f) Acknowledgments
(g) References

In some cases, presentation will be more effective if you combine some of these sections, e.g., Results and Discussion, particularly for short papers. The title should be short but clear. Numbered series titles are allowed only when a group of papers, starting with I. appear together.

On the title page, include the title, running title (not to exceed 60 characters and spaces), full name of each author, address(es) of the institution(s) where the work was performed, and each author's affiliation. In case of more than one affiliation, match authors and affiliations with superscript symbols (avoid the asterisk), except the first author. If an author is no longer at the institution where the work was done, indicate his/her present address in a footnote. Place an asterisk (*) after the name of the author to whom inquiries should be directed, and include a footnote: "* To whom correspondence should be addressed."

Citations of relevant published work in text, tables, and figures should read "Kim and Kang (1987)". For three or more authors, use "Chung et al. (1989)"; use "Park (1983a)" and "Park (1983b)" when citing more than one paper by the same author(s) published in the same year.

References must include all relevant published work and accepted (in press) papers; all listed references must be cited in the text. Submit copies of any manuscripts in press which might affect the review of the manuscript under consideration. Arrange References section in alphabetical order by author. Do not cite the following: unpublished data, personal communications, manuscripts in preparation, manuscripts submitted, pamphlets, abstracts, and materials and have not be subjected to peer review. Refer to such sources parenthetically in the text. References section format:

Abbreviate journal names according to Chemical Abstracts or Biological Abstracts List of Serials (Biosis).

Use only essential footnotes, numbered in Arabic numerals.

List nonstandard abbreviations together in a single footnote. The use of acronyms is discouraged.

C. Preparation of Manuscript

Type manuscripts with double spacing throughout including references, tables, footnotes, and figure legends, on one side of an A4-size paper with a margin of 2.5 cm all around. Submit three easily legible copies of the manuscript. Arrange the parts of the manuscript as described and number all sheets in succession, the title page being page 1. Indicate by marginal notes the appropriate location in the text of the tables and figures. Start on a separate sheet each of the following: (a) title page; (b) abstract; (c) text from introduction to acknowledgments; (d) references; (e) footnotes; (f) legends for figures (more than one legend may be on the same page); (g) tables; and (h) figures. Be sure to include at least two matt prints of all halftones figures.

D. Preparation of Tables

Each table should have explanatory title and sufficient experimental detail to be intelligible without reference to the text. Limit horizontal rules; do not use vertical rules. Use superscript lowercase italic alphabets for footnotes.

Supply an appropriate heading for each column. Include units in which the data are expressed at the top of each column. Do not use ditto marks.

E. Preparation of Illustrations

A complete set of figures, with prints approximately the same size as manuscript pages, should accompany each copy of the manuscript. Identify all figures with figure number and indicate the TOP side. Only one set of top quality is needed for the printer; others may be prints or photocopies, except electron micrographs or halftone figures, where good quality prints should be supplied with each manuscript copy.

Figures will be reproduced in single column width (8.4 cm) or less. All letters, numbers and symbols would be at least 1.5 mm but not more than 3 mm high after reduction. Do not letter the title or legend on the figure itself.
