About the journal

The South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences (SAJEMS) is a leading publication for interdisciplinary research in economic and management sciences, with a special focus on the African continent. SAJEMS publishes and disseminates academic articles that contribute to the understanding of African markets and the behaviour of economic agents operating in those markets, including consumers, firms and regulators. In addition to applied research on African markets and market participants, the editorial board invites authors to submit interdisciplinary research that breaks down common intellectual silos and prepares a new path for debate on the operation and development of markets in and around Africa.

SAJEMS is a refereed scientific journal and is accredited by ISI Thomson in their Social Sciences Citation Index and by the South African Department of Education. SAJEMS is also indexed and abstracted in EconLit, the electronic database of the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL); the relevant JEL classification number appears with the abstract of each article.

SAJEMS, which appears in March, June, September and December, is hosted by the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria. All published articles are assumed to represent the views of the authors; neither the editorial board of the journal nor the University of Pretoria accept responsibility for those views.

Instructions to Authors

Requirements for manuscript submission

All submissions are to be written in English. We request that you submit two documents: a title page and an anonymous manuscript, i.e.,the entire manuscript without author or contact information. The separate title page should include the title, the abstract (no more than 135 words), Journal of Economic Literature (www.aeaweb.org/journal/jel_class_system.html) classification number, keywords, the author(s), their institutional affiliations, and the contact details of the corresponding author. You are welcome to submit the documents in word or pdf format via email to sajems@up.ac.za.

Submission of a manuscript confirms that the research was conducted by the listed author(s), and that it is not under consideration at any other journal. SAJEMS condones neither plagiarism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism) nor the infringement of copyright (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_infringement). Violation of either of these principles will result in immediate rejection and follow-up with the author's or authors institution(s). Submission of a manuscript to SAJEMS implies author consent to the preceding principles.

Submission Fee

A submission fee of R400 (VAT inclusive) is payable upon submission of a manuscript by authors from South African institutions and US$50 by authors from foreign institutions. The manuscript will only be considered for review once proof of payment has been received. An official invoice can be issued or payment can be made directly to the University of Pretoria: ABSA Bank Hatfield branch, acc no 2140000038, clearly stating A9373-3501 SAJEMS submission fees and your name.

Types of Manuscript

According to the mission of SAJEMS, the purpose of the journal is to publish economic and management science research, preferably of an interdisciplinary nature, maintaining a focus on the operation, regulation and development of markets in and around Africa, including trading partners. The following types of papers will be considered for publication: original research, new perspectives on previous research and research notes. Original research should be empirical, theoretical or experimental and should not exceed 7000 words  approximately 25 pages including figures, tables, references, and other necessary items. New perspectives on previous research should also not exceed 7000 words. Although a detailed survey of the literature is likely to be a part of such a contribution, a summary of the literature does not constitute a new perspective on previous research, and, therefore, will not be considered for publication. Research notes should not exceed 1500 words  approximately 5 pages including figures, tables and references. One example of a research note is an application of a previously developed methodology to a different set of secondary data, in which case, to a debate on the robustness of results or the interpretation of results. All manuscripts are subjected to a double-blind reviewing process handled by the editorial board. Although the review processing time does vary by article, the average response time, following payment, is approximately four months.

Format of Manuscript

Authors of accepted papers are asked to place their article into the journal's format, after which it is text-edited by SAJEMS language consultants. Edited papers are returned to the author(s) for approval. We ask authors to submit the accepted text-edited version within three days, following which, it is sent to the publishers.

Section headings should be bold integer values, e.g., 1, 2 and 3. Subsection headings should also be bold and numbered sequentially, e.g., 2.1 and 2.2. Sub-subsection headings should be italicised, e.g., 2.2.1 and 2.2.2. Further sub-headings should follow as: 2.2.1.1 and 2.2.1.2. We ask that articles not be broken further than that. Appendix enumeration is to follow a similar pattern: A and B, A.1 and A.2, A.2.1 and A.2.2, and, finally, A.2.1.1 and A.2.1.2.

Any thanks, acknowledgements or other considerations should be placed in a final section of the paper; the heading of the section should be Acknowledgements.

Endnotes are to be used, and not footnotes. These should be numbered sequentially and placed immediately following the text of the manuscript.

Tables should be self-explanatory in all instances, i.e., a reader should be able to open to the table and know what is in it, without reading the article. The title and reference number of the table should be placed at the top of the table and the tables should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript, and not within sections. Notes immediately following the table should explain any symbols or other useful information to the reader. The source of the table and any software used to calculate the numbers in the table should be listed. Avoid using variable names; instead use accurate, but short descriptions that are easily understood.

Figures should be self-explanatory in all instances. The caption and number of the figure should be placed at the top of the figure. Figures should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript. Any notes describing the figure should be included immediately below the figure, and that must include the source of the figure and any software used to create the figure, especially if specific calculations were required.

Equations should be numbered consecutively, and those numbers should appear to the right of the equation. Theorems, lemmas, corollaries and proofs should also be numbered consecutively; however, we prefer that proofs be relegated to the appendix, in order to maintain the flow of the manuscript.

Referencing should follow the Harvard referencing system. For details, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Harvard_referencing.
