About the journal
|
International Journal of Selection and Assessment (IJSA) is a quarterly scientific journal that publishes original articles related to all aspects of personnel selection, staffing, and assessment in organizations.
Using an effective combination of academic research with professional-led best practice, IJSA aims to develop new knowledge and understanding in these important areas of work psychology and contemporary workforce management.
Led by an international editorial board of academics and practitioners, IJSA continues to lead and develop personnel staffing research and practice and is the only established publication with a selection and assessment focus. Its growing importance in personnel management and among human resource management and work psychology researchers is highlighted by its consistently improving ranking in the ISI Journal Citation Reports.
Each issue also includes an Information Exchange section consisting of:
- short empirical papers reporting reliability and validity evidence for specific measures, normative data for groups of special interest (specific occupational groups, men, women, various ethnic groups), etc.
- replication studies
- illustrations
- select book reviews
- position papers
- practice accounts.
IJSA is intended for an international readership of industrial, work and organizational (IWO) psychology researchers and personnel/human resource management practitioners in organizations.

Instructions to Authors
International Journal of Selection and Assessment (IJSA) is a quarterly scientific journal that publishes original articles related to all aspects of staffing (including, but not limited to, personnel selection), and assessment in organizations. Papers that contribute new knowledge and understanding in assessment of individual differences, test validation, psychometric measurement, and personnel decision making are appropriate for the journal. Articles can also deal with other aspects of personnel selection/staffing, such as job analysis, recruitment, downsizing, and performance measurement. Other topics appropriate for IJSA include validation; validity generalization; group differences; fairness; bias; adverse impact; predictors; criteria; job performance; counterproductive work behaviors; organizational citizenship behaviors; adjustment; absenteeism; turnover; utility analysis; ability, knowledge, skill and personality measurement; classification; placement; and applicant reactions.
Given IJSAs world-wide audience, cross-cultural investigations are especially welcome. The goal of the IJSA is to publish empirical studies, review articles, and theoretical expositions which make a substantive and original contribution to knowledge.
Each issue includes the Information Exchange section consisting of (1) short empirical papers reporting reliability and validity evidence for specific measures, normative data for groups of special interest (specific occupational groups, men, women, various ethnic groups) etc.; (2) replication studies, (3) illustrations, (4) select book reviews, (5) position papers, and (6) practice accounts.
The readership of IJSA is multinational and comprises both academics in staffing and practitioners in organizations. Papers should be written in a style that keeps the needs of both groups in mind.
The following instructions refer to the submission of manuscripts and other contributions to the journal.
Feature Article Manuscripts
Feature article submissions to IJSA are primarily empirical studies, however, review articles or theoretical expositions can also be considered. The primary criterion for acceptance is whether or not a manuscript makes a substantive and original contribution to knowledge. Submissions will be evaluated according to the following criteria: Importance of research question/problem, grounding of the research in theory/literature, methodological soundness (for empirical papers), appropriateness of data analyses (for empirical papers), legitimacy of conclusions, originality of the contribution, implications for research and/or practice, relevance for an international audience, clarity and readability.
Empirical studies should use appropriate methods for the research question(s) and a detailed description of the methods utilized and measures employed, and samples should be given. Data analysis should be appropriate for the type of data and should be sufficiently comprehensive to support interpretation of the results. Results should be explained clearly and related to previous literature in the area. The potential generalizability of results reported should be addressed, as should their implications for future research and practice. Empirical studies which rely on student participants will only be considered exceptionally and where sufficient justification is provided.
Reviews should present a state-of-the-art review and critique of an area of current research or practice. References to literature and study findings should not be restricted to the country of origin, but should cite international developments in the area under review. Theoretical developments should include a clear, concise, but comprehensive exposition of the theory or model proposed. Theories and models should be testable and falsifiable by empirical investigations. Sufficient details of the operationalization of the theory should be provided to allow researchers to conduct further empirical investigations.
Authors should follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.) in preparing manuscripts for submission. Authors are requested to adhere to APA guidelines for both style and presentation. All manuscripts must be typed in double line spacing, and include an abstract (max. 120 words). Instructions for preparing tables, figures, references, and abstracts are detailed in the Publication Manual. Figures and Tables should each be supplied on a separate sheet. Diagrams will not be re-drawn, and should be supplied as clean artwork, or as computer-generated figures using a good laser printer. Lettering should be of a high standard and large enough to be legible when the diagram is reduced in size for publication. Author notes should appear on the title page. Authors should avoid the use of sexist language.
The review process for publication in IJSA is blind. Submissions are sent out for masked review by 2-3 independent referees. Authors should ensure that their submission includes a separate title page listing author names and affiliations, as well as contact information for the corresponding author(s) (address, phone number and e-mail).
Information Exchange Manuscripts
Manuscripts appropriate for this section include short empirical papers reporting different lines of reliability and validity evidence for specific measures, normative data for groups of special interest (specific occupational groups, men, women, various ethnic groups), replication studies, illustrations, select book reviews, position papers, and practice accounts. Papers for this section should be 6-7 double spaced, manuscript pages long. A typical empirical paper for this section should include the following sections: (1) A statement of purpose (limited to a few sentences), (2) Description of methods (full description of sample, setting, measures and procedures), (3) Presentation of results (the text should state which analyses were carried out and should present results in tabular format. Also, all means, SDs, and intercorrelations among study variables should be presented in tables), (4) Statement of conclusions (limited to a few sentences). The references for information exchange articles should be kept to a minimum (5-10 references). Book reviews published in IJSA are typically commissioned by the Editors.
General
Academic papers are refereed anonymously and are considered for publication on the understanding that they have not been published previously or submitted for publication elsewhere.
The Editor or Associate Editors decision is final.
Authors should obtain, in writing, permission to reproduce material held in copyright by others, and a copy of this permission should be submitted with the paper.
The Editors and publisher cannot accept responsibility for damage to or loss of papers submitted to them.
Upon acceptance of a manuscript, authors will be expected to provide a copy of their paper on disk. Preferred file format is MS Word. The disk copy must be identical to the accepted, printed paper manuscript.
Authors whose papers are accepted for publication will be sent proofs for checking. They may be charged for any alterations other than the correction of printers errors. On publication, five copies of the relevant issue of IJSA will be sent to the corresponding author without charge. Off prints may be ordered on the form accompanying the proofs.
Submissions
IJSA uses primarily an electronic submission process. Submitting authors should make every effort to submit manuscripts electronically (via e-mail) as this will result in faster decision making. Files e-mailed as an attachment can be in Microsoft Word. The electronic version of the submission should be complete copy of the paper, prepared for masked review. A separate file should be attached for the title page of the manuscript, listing author names and affiliations, as well as contact information for the corresponding author(s) (address, phone number and e-mail). Please ensure that submission files are virus free.
Electronic submissions should be sent to one of two Editors of the journal using the e-mail addresses listed below. Authors without access to the Internet should mail four hard copies and a disk copy of their manuscript to one of two Editors of the journal:

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
Exclusive Licence Form.
Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here
