Instructions to Authors
Submission
Four copies of each typescript should be submitted to the Editor:
Professor Jim Horne Journal of Sleep Research Department of Human Sciences Loughborough University Loughborough Leicestershire LE11 3TU UK
Tel: +44 (0) 1509 223004 Fax: +44 (0) 1509 610724 Telex: 34319 e-mail: j.a.horne@lboro.ac.uk
Further information can be obtained from the Editor above.
A covering letter must be included, signed by the corresponding author (i.e. the author to whom correspondence should be addressed), and stating on behalf of all the authors that the work has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. On acceptance of their paper, authors should submit a disk of the final version, together with a signed Copyright Assignment Form.
The final version of the hard copy and the file on disk must be the same. Note the software used, the type of computer, and any special (non-keyboard) characters used. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph. Turn the hyphenation option off.
Always enclose a hard copy of figures and tables. Particular attention should be taken to ensure that any articles submitted in this form adhere exactly to the journal style in all respects. Further details can be obtained from the Publisher. Disks will not be returned to the authors, and are not necessary for Letter submissions.
Authors will be required to assign copyright in their paper to Blackwell Publishing Ltd. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned. (Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement). To assist authors the editorial office will supply an appropriate Copyright Assignment Form. Alternatively, the copyright form can be accessed on line at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/jsr_caf.pdf (see instructions on hhttp://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/jsr_notes.pdf).
Manuscript Style
There are several categories of material:
Fast-track Short Papers These should be approximately 2000 words in length, with a maximum of four figures or tables. Fast-track papers are rapidly reviewed and published.
Regular Research Papers These are of a more usual length (3000-5000 words), and will preferably be oriented towards basic clinical and non-clinical findings.
Review Papers These are intended to be well argued, preferably controversial reviews of topical subjects which, it is hoped, will generate debate.
Letters to the Editor The Editor welcomes succinct correspondence relating to articles published in the journal, and of an academic and interesting nature.
Invited Symposia The journal presents symposia papers by invitation, covering topical subjects.
Typescripts should be on A4 paper, double-spaced and with ample margins. It should consist of the following sections.
Title Page
This should contain a concise title of the article, a shortened version (no more than 50 characters including spaces) for the running head, names of the authors, their affiliations, and the full postal and e-mail address, fax and telephone number of an author to whom correspondence can be addressed.
Summary
This should be on a separate page, and less than 250 words. It should be followed by up to six key words.
Main Text
This should start on a separate folio, and include: an introduction, methods, results and discussion. The suggested points of insertion of figures and tables, etc., should be indicated. Authors should avoid abbreviations (except for those commonly understood), long sentences, and many juxtaposed numbers in sentences.
References
These should be in the Harvard style, i.e. using the names of the authors in alphabetical order (where there are more than two authors, use the first author only, followed by et al.), followed by the year of publication. Unpublished work should only be cited in the text. Only references genuinely in press should be listed in the reference list.
Examples of References:
Illustrations
These should be referred to in the text as figures using Arabic numbers, e.g. Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc., in order of appearance. Each figure should be marked on the back with its appropriate number, together with the name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the paper. Where there is doubt as to the orientation of an illustration, the top should be marked with an arrow.
Photographs and photomicrographs should be unmounted glossy prints and should not be retouched. Labelling should be clearly indicated on an overlay or photocopy.
Line drawings should be on separate sheets of white paper in black indelible ink (dot matrix illustrations are not permitted); lettering should be on an overlay or photocopy and should be no less than 4 mm high for a 50% reduction. Each figure should have a legend clearly describing it; these legends should be grouped on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse. Always enclose a hard copy of digitally supplied figures.
Colour Illustrations It is the policy of the journal for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded on-line at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf. However, if you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Editor at the address below, who will be able to email or fax a form to you. Once completed, please return the form to the Editor at the following address: Prof Jim Horne, Journal of Sleep Research, Dept of Human Sciences, Loughborough University, Loughborough, Leicester LE11 3TU, UK (e-mail: j.horne@lboro.ac.uk; fax: +44 (0) 1509 223108). Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.
Electronic Artwork
We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated PostScript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available on-line at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp
Tables
These should include only essential data. Each table must be typewritten on a separate sheet and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, e.g. Table 1, and given a short caption.
Acknowledgements
These should be brief and must include references to sources of financial and logistical support.
Units
Measurements must be in SI units. Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (Royal Society of Medicine, 1988) is a useful guide.
Page Proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
These must be returned to the Editor within 3 days of receipt, ideally by fax. Only typographical errors and other essential small changes can be made at this stage. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Reprints
The corresponding author will receive a pdf 'reprint' of his or her article. Printed copies can be ordered with the return of proofs.
