About the journal

Time & Society publishes articles, reviews, and scholarly comment discussing the workings of time and temporality across a range of disciplines, including anthropology, geography, history, psychology, and sociology. Work focuses on methodological and theoretical problems, including the use of time in organizational contexts. You'll also find critiques of and proposals for time-related changes in the formation of public, social, economic, and organizational policies.
"Time has become one of the central topics of the social sciences. Time & Society symbolises this development and has played a major role in forming this new field of study" - John Urry
"Time & Society opens up the horizon for a necessary multidisciplinary discourse between social and natural scientists, historians and psychologists, technical experts and politicians for answers to the urgent questions concerning our future" - Ulrich Beck

Instructions to Authors

Articles (three copies) must be typed in double spacing throughout on one side of A4 paper with generous margins.

There is no absolute limit on length, but 7000 words, including notes and references, is a useful upper limit to aim for. Book reviews should be 500-800 words, or 1500 words if a number of books are discussed in one review.

Each paper should be accompanied by: (a) title of paper and abstract of 100 words maximum; (b) author's full name; a biographical note of no more than 70 words which includes institutional address, e-mail address if applicable, telephone and fax numbers; key words (5 maximum); and an indication of which disciplines are most likely to be interested.
Tables and figures (camera-ready copy) should be presented on separate sheets of paper at the end of the article, and should carry short, descriptive titles. Please indicate their position in the text.
Referencing. Use the Harvard-style system: surname, date and page no. cited in the text; with an alphabetically ordered end list, headed References, and typed double-spaced:
(a) Giddens, A. (1984) The Constitution of Society. Cambridge: Polity Press.

(b) Kristeva, J. (1981) 'Women's Time', Signs 7(1): 13-35.

(c) Jahoda, M. (1988) 'Time: A Social Psychological Perspective', in M. Young and T. Schuller (eds) The Rhythms of Society, pp. 154-72. London/New York: Routledge.
When citing a new edition of a previously published work, include both dates, e.g. Durkheim (1912/1976), in text and references.
Essential notes should be indicated by superscript numbers in the text, and presented at the end of the text before the references.
Authors are asked to bear in mind the inter-disciplinary readership of the journal and to avoid as much as possible the use of technical language and discipline-specific jargon.
Authors are sent proofs for checking and correction, and will be given a set number of accesses to their article on Sage Journals Online, similar to the set number of paper offprints they currently receive, with the ability to print off a set number of copies of their article, as well as the opportunity to purchase additional paper copies if they wish. We will continue to send complimentary copies of the journal in which their articles appear, in addition to the online access to pdfs.
Copyright. Before publication authors are requested to assign copyright to SAGE Publications, subject to retaining their right to reuse the material in other publications written or edited by themselves and due to be published at least one year after initial publication in this journal.
Manuscripts and other correspondence can be sent to either editor, but it is suggested that authors whose first language is not English should contact Carmen Leccardi, Department of Sociology and Social Research, University of Milan Bicocca, viale Sarca 202, 20126 Milan, Italy [email:
