Types of Manuscripts
Research articles: Full-length reports of original research, illustrated as appropriate. They should contain no more than 3000 words, excluding references.
Short communications: These report original data, which can be communicated in shorter format. They should contain no more than 1600 words, excluding references.
Research letters: These are brief reports of original research emphasizing the main point of the article. They should contain no more than 900 words, excluding references. Letters should be accompanied by a summary of 60 words or less.
Letters to the Editor: Letters to the Editor are encouraged and may report new or important observations. Letters may also comment on or provide criticism pertaining to developments in understanding autonomic function, or papers previously published in this journal. Criticism of published work must be objective and supported by experimental data. Any letter accepted for publication which comments upon a previously published article will be shown to the author(s) of the original paper, who will be invited to submit a reply for publication in the same issue. Letters should follow the normal presentation style of the journal. They may include references, one table and/or one illustration, and should be less than 150 words in length. Although we make all efforts to avoid mistakes, they occasionally escape our notice. Mistakes pointed out in Letters will be published in the "Department of Errors" and the author will be acknowledged.
Book reviews: Reviews of new books, or of new editions of existing texts, are normally commissioned by the Editors but unsolicited reviews may be considered for publication.
Editorials/Review articles: Authors should discuss the topic of their proposed review with the Editors before submission. Unsolicited editorials are also welcome and will be submitted for peer review.
Case Reports: Short papers documenting practical experience of a novel treatment, an unusual facet of a condition, or any other event that other practitioners will not have encountered before. They should contain no more than 1600 words.
Autonomic images: These are interesting, previously unpublished images. Title, legend, and information regarding the origin of the image should be included in the submission.

Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts must be accompanied by the "Copyright Transfer Statement," which is regularly published in this journal. The author(s) transfer(s) the copyright in and to the manuscript to Steinkopff Verlag effective if and when the article is accepted for publication. The copyright covers the exclusive and unlimited rights to reproduce and distribute the article in any form of reproduction (printing, electronic media or any other form); it also covers translation rights for all languages and countries. For U.S. authors the copyright is transferred to the extent transferable.

Manuscripts must be submitted along with a statement that (1) the manuscript has not been submitted for publication elsewhere and will not be submitted elsewhere while under consideration for this journal and that (2) all human studies have been reviewed by the appropriate ethics committee and have therefore been performed in accordance with the ethical standards laid down in the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki. It should also be stated clearly in the text that all persons gave their informed consent prior to their inclusion in the study. Details that might disclose the identity of the subjects under study should be omitted.

Reports of animal experiments must state that the "Principles of laboratory animal care" (NIH publication No. 86-23, revised 1985) were followed, as well as specific national laws (e.g. the current version of the German Law on the Protection of Animals) where applicable.

Papers must be written in English. Editorial assistance with the language is available when needed. Manuscripts should be submitted in quadruplicate and in electronic format on diskette. Please consult the Technical Instructions for diskette submission. In addition, we strongly encourage authors to send manuscripts in electronic format via e-mail to the Editorial Office at ARJ@mssm.edu.

In cases of duplicate submission, the Editors reserve the right to not accept further papers for publication from the author involved for a defined period. Further, the Publisher reserves the right to invoice the author for the costs incurred during the processing of material not published for reasons related to duplicate submissions. The Editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts that do not comply with the abovementioned requirements. The author will be held responsible for false statements or for failure to fulfill the above-mentioned requirements. In order to reduce mailing costs, rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to authors.
