An international journal reporting original experimental investigations into the biogenesis and progression of pathologic processes which afford new insights into the basic mechanisms underlying human disease. Both the results of clinical research and of investigation based on appropriate in vivo and in vitro experimental models are published. Experimental pathology encompasses the use of multidiciplinary scientific techniques and includes research into such diverse fields of interest as:
the causes of impaired resistance to infection
stress-related diseases
environment-related toxicity
the effect of disease processes including carcinogenesis
biochemical malfunctions
iatrogenic disease
Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines
All papers (in English) should be sent to:
The Editor
Professor D.R. Katz
International Journal of Experimental Pathology
Department of Immunology and Molecular Pathology
University College London
Windeyer Building
46 Cleveland Street
London W1T 4JF
UK
Papers received are assumed to have been submitted exclusively to the International Journal of Experimental Pathology as they become the copyright of the journal. A completed copyright assignment form must be included with the submitted manuscript. The Editor will decide on the time of publication and retains the usual right to modify the style and length of the contribution; major changes will be agreed with the author(s).
In the interest of space and prompt publication papers must be prepared in clear and concise English. Scientifically sound papers which are presented in poor English may be returned to authors for rewriting prior to acceptance.
Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be typed double spaced on one side of the paper with wide margins. Four copies of the manuscript and illustrations should be sent. On acceptance of their paper, authors should submit a disk of the final version. A title page should contain: the names of author(s); their appointment(s); address(es) at the time of preparation of the manuscript; address for correspondence including e-mail address; and a short running title. Authors are advised to keep a copy of all manuscripts, as no responsibility can be accepted for loss.
Disks
The final version of the hard copy and the file on disk must be the same. Note the software used, the type of computer, and any special (non-keyboard) characters used. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph. Turn the hyphenation option off. Always enclose a hard copy of figures and tables. Disks will not be returned to authors. Instructions for disk submission are obtainable from the Editorial Office.
Reports of original work should usually be arranged in the conventional order of summary, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements and references with suitable headings for each part. Further sub-divisions, with appropriately less significant headings, can be used.
The summary should contain a factual account of the methods and results in not more than 200 words, rather than a description of the subject of the paper and the opinions of the author(s). For indexing purposes, up to six 'keywords' should be identified.
Results may be presented in the text, in tables and figures, but the text should, in general, comment on rather than repeat information in tables.
Persons named in the acknowledgements must have formally agreed to their names so appearing.
Reviews
Reviews will normally be commissioned: unsolicited reviews will not be considered unless the editors have been consulted in advance.
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures should be separate from the text, with their positions indicated in the text margin. Both are numbered with arabic numerals. Figures should be marked on the back (light in pencil) with the name(s) of the author(s), the figure number, and the top edge indicated. Each should have a separate descriptive legend typed on a separate sheet. Photographs (three copies) are usually reproduced at the magnification submitted without trimming and should be unmounted glossy prints of good contrast, well matched and preferably with a transparent overlay for protection. Lettering or arrows may appear on the overlay or ready for reproduction on the print itself. Magnifications may be indicated by a scale bar or stated in the captions.
Line drawings should be on white board or be glossy prints, arranged to save space. Keys should be given in the legends, not in the figure itself.
All illustrations, both drawings and photographs, must be of good quality since delay will result if referees need to see improved versions.
Save figures on disk in as many different formats as are available to you. Encapsulated postscript CEPS files can usually be used but cannot be modified. Always enclose a hard copy of figures.
Colour Illustrations
The first colour figure is free but the author must pay the cost of reproduction in full for subsequent figures. Please note that if there is more than one piece of colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is:

If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor at the address below, aand they will be able to email or FAX a form to you. Once completed, please return the form to the Production Editor at the address below:

Spelling
Spelling should conform to The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English. Authors should avoid excessive use of jargon or obscure technical terms.
Measurements
Measurements should be expressed in SI units. If the original observations were recorded in other units, this should be stated, together with the appropriate conversion factors.
Standard Abbreviations
Standard abbreviations are used and should follow those laid down in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (1994) published by the Royal Society of Medicine. Abbreviations should be used sparingly and only if a lengthy name or expression is repeated frequently throughout the manuscript. Words must appear in full on first appearance in both summary and text, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Drugs should be described by their official names but trade names should be indicated in parentheses the first time the drug is quoted in the text.
References
References must be typed double spaced and should be made only to papers closely related to the author's work: exhaustive lists should be avoided. In the text, use the name of the author(s) followed by the date of publication; where there are two authors use the form: Maley and House (1983); where there are more than two authors use the form: Boyse et al. (1965).
Arrange the list of authors quoted at the end of the text in alphabetical order set out as follows; name(s) and initials of author(s), year of publication (in parentheses), title of the article, name of the journal (abbreviated according to the World List of Scientific Periodicals), volume number, first and last page numbers. In the case of books the order is; name(s) and initials of author(s), year of publication (in parentheses), chapter title, full book title, edition, names of the editors, place and name of publisher, and page numbers. References to 'personal communications' and 'unpublished work' may be quoted in the text with all names and initials to avoid confusion but should not be included in the references. Examples of the style to be used are given below:
Boyse E.A., Old L.J. & Stockert E. (1965) The TL antigen: a review. In Immunopathology. 4th International Symposium, Monte Carlo. Eds P. Graber & P.A. Miescher. Basel: Schwabe. pp. 280-295.
Piguet P.F & Vesin C (1994) Pulmonary platelet trapping induced by bleomycin: correlation with fibrosis and involvement of the ?2 integrins. Int. J. Exp. Path. 75, 321-328.
Complimentary Subscription
On acceptance, corresponding authors will receive a complimentary subscription for the year in which their paper appears; thereafter qualifying for a preferential author's rate, currently ¡ê25.
Page Proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
Offprints
Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free to authors, but additional copies may be ordered on the printed form sent with the proofs.
