Instructions to Authors

AIMS AND SCOPE
With its fast publication of the latest developments and discoveries in this important field of medicine, the European Journal of Cancer Prevention aims to promote an increased awareness of all aspects of cancer prevention and to stimulate new ideas and innovations. The journal has a wide-ranging scope, covering such aspects as descriptive and metabolic epidemiology, histopathology, genetics bio-chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, clinical medicine, intervention trials and public education, basic laboratory studies and special group studies. Although affiliated to a European organization, the European Journal of Cancer Prevention addresses issues of international importance.

TYPES OF SUBMISSION
Four types of manuscripts will be considered:

  1. Original research articles.
  2. Review articles in which a specific topic is extensively reviewed.
  3. Short communications, i.e. new findings which merit quick dissemination.
  4. Letters to the Editor.

PEER REVIEW
Manuscripts submitted to European Journal of Cancer Prevention are reviewed by two or more authorities for significance, originality and validity. Reviewers comments will be sent to the author. The author will generally be advised within eight weeks as to whether the article has been accepted, rejected, or will require revisions.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
(These guidelines are derived from ‘Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals? Annals of Internal Medicine 1988;108: 258?65).

Original articles are considered for publication on the understanding that neither the article nor its essential substance has been or will be published elsewhere before appearing in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention. Abstracts and press reports published in connection with scientific meetings are not considered to be publications.

Submit one original and two copies of the manuscript, in English, including text pages references legends to figures, tables, and glossy prints of figures. Only typed copy on standard-sized paper, double-spaced throughout, with margins of at least 2.5 cm is acceptable.

Authors are welcome to submit a final copy of their manuscript on computer diskettes. Diskettes should be prepared on an IBM-compatible machine and accompanied by a statement of the word-processing software used. Please note that a hard copy of the manuscript will still be required. Authors are responsible for ensuring that adequate back-up copies are retained.

Address all submissions to:

A covering letter should identify the person (with the full address, telephone, and fax numbers) responsible for negotiations concerning the manuscript; the letter should state that the final manuscript has been approved by all authors.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Authors are expected to disclose any commercial or other associations that might pose a conflict of interest in connection with the submitted article. All funding sources supporting the work should be acknowledged on the title page, as should institutional or corporate affiliations of the authors.

PERMISSIONS
Materials copied from other sources must be accompanied by a written statement from both author and publisher giving permission to European Journal of Cancer Prevention for reproduction. Obtain permission in writing from at least one author of papers still in press, of unpublished data, and of personal communications. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that such permissions are obtained.

ARRANGEMENT OF MANUSCRIPTS
(1) Title page and authors
Provide a separate page giving the title of the paper. Titles should be concise and descriptive. Also include a running head of fewer than 40 letter spaces; the name(s) of the author(s), including the first name(s) and academic degree(s); the name of the department and institution in which the work was performed; the institutional affiliation of each author and the name and address of the author to whom reprint requests should be addressed. Any grant support, technical help or other assistance that requires acknowledgement should appear on this page.

(2) Abstract page and key words
An abstract of no more than 200 words should be provided on a separate page. This abstract should present the reason for the study, the major findings (give specific data if possible), and the principal conclusions. Three to 10 key words or short phrases which will assist in indexing the article should be added to the bottom of the abstract page. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings list from Index Medical.

(3) References
References are to be cited in the text by author and year, as Black and White (1991) or (Black and White 1991). A series of references in the text should appear in chronological order, e.g. White and Black, 1989; Black and White 1991. References having three or more authors are cited Black et al., (1991). References to papers by the same authors in the same year are distinguished by letters a, b, etc. (e.g. 1988a,b). Publications having no obvious authors are cited as Anon, (1991) in the text and bibliography. References with three or more authors should be placed in chronological order after taking account of the names of the first and second authors. Some sample reference styles follow:

In journals:
Palmer KR, Duerden BI, Holdsworth CD (1980). Bacterial and endotoxin studies in cases of ulcerative colitis. Gut 21: 851?.

Books:
(Cite one location of the publisher only)
Faivre J, Hill MJ (1987). Causation and Prevention of Colorectal Cancer. Excerpta Medica, Amsterdam.

Chapters in books:
(Cite one location of the publisher only)
Wyllie AH (1987). Oncogenes: correlates or controls of tumour progression.
In Causation and Prevention of Colorectal Cancer (eds Faivre J, Hill MJ); Excerpta Medica, Amsterdam, pp. 121?2.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the reference list contains all the citations in the text and that the references are accurate.

(4) Tables and artwork
Type tables in double spacing on separate sheets and provide a title for each. Tables should be numbered in arabic numerals. Vertical rules should be used. The position of each table should be indicated in the margin of the manuscript. Illustrations should be submitted uncounted or mounted only with rubber cement, identified on the back with the author’s name, and the top plainly marked. Graphs and drawings should be c. 12.5 cm?7.5 cm glossy prints and should be of professional quality. For X-rays or clinical photos remove all markings before photographing (such as patient's initials and dates). Any arrows or lettering must be applied with a professional product (such as Chartpak). These identifying marks should be made large enough to be seen when the photograph is reduced. Sequences of radiographs should be of the same magnification. Magnifications must be indicated, preferably by a scale bar. The subject should be centred in clinical photographs. Crop out extraneous material and background. Each figure should have a separate, fully explicit legend; all sections of the figure and all abbreviations and symbols used should be clearly defined. Colour illustrations will be charged to the authors (price ?99 per printed page).

(5) General
Abbreviations. Except for units of measurement, only standard abbreviations are acceptable ?see the Uniform Requirements referred to above. The first time an abbreviation appears it should be defined.

Drug names. Generic names in general, should be used. If an author so desires brand names may be inserted in parentheses.

Units of measurement. Authors must express measurements in System International (SI) units, but they may include older conventional units in parentheses if they desire.

PROOFS, REPRINTS AND COPYRIGHT
Normally authors will be sent page proofs by fax where available. Such corrections as are necessary should be listed in the form of a table, with the location of the correction in the left-hand column and the correction required in the right-hand column. This table should be faxed to the Publisher within two days of receipt. Alterations, other than essential corrections, to the text of the paper should not be made at this stage; the cost of such alterations may be passed on to the author.
Where the above procedure is not possible for technical reasons or author absence, proof reading will be done by the Publisher.
A form for ordering reprints will be supplied with the proofs and should be returned directly to the Publisher. Manuscripts are accepted for publication on the understanding that exclusive copyright in the paper is assigned to the Publisher. However, this does not limit the freedom of the author(s) to use material in the paper in any other published works.
