Environmental Technology is a monthly journal for the rapid publication of technological manuscripts in the field of applied environmental studies, including environmental biotechnology, environmental and sanitary engineering, industrial waste management and hazardous waste disposal, air and water pollution control, solid waste management, industrial hygiene and associated technologies.
Instructions to Authors
The instructions below are also available in Adobe pdf format, which contains further details for submission of final manuscripts and figures, authors are strongly advised to download and read this file Instructions for Authors (289Kb).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
Manuscripts up to eight printed pages in length will be considered for publication. Long manuscripts will be considered after prior consultation and an invitation to submit by the appropriate regional editor. Authors should submit their manuscripts (4 copies) for refereeing as complete manuscripts, with figures, tables and structural formulae. Authors should submit the final manuscript, after corrections, as computer files (Please see notes on computer requirements for acceptable file formats) on floppy diskette, also include a paper copy to aid the formatting of their files into the final form. The publishers reserve the right to adjust the position of tables, figures, formulae and photographs to ensure page economy. Authors should also nominate three referees who are recognised in the appropriate field to review their work.
TYPESCRIPTS
1. Papers will be reformatted from authors typescripts which must be supplied on diskettes and paper. Proofs will be printed and the final responsibility for accuracy rests with the author(s).
2. English is the preferred language, but papers may be submitted in French, with an English abstract, English keywords and an English translation of the title, which will be included in the publication.
3. Contributions may be up to 8 printed pages (approximately 8,000 words) and should be typed in a clear script (preferably Palatino) and double spaced, with 1.5 cm margins all round. Items that are usually italicised may be typed as italics or underlined.
4. On the first page the title should be typed in capitals and followed by:
Author(s) full name indicating by an asterisk (*) the author to whom correspondence should be addressed;
Adequate postal address(es), and email address or FAX number for corresponding Author;
An abstract of no greater than 250 words.
Keywords, a maximum of 5 keywords which identify the main points in the paper. Placed immediately below the abstract
5. Three levels of heading may be used:
MAJOR HEADINGS These should be typed in upper case, not underlined and centred on the page on a separate line.
Minor Headings These should be typed in upper and lower case (as indicated), not underlined and aligned on the left of the page on a separate line.
Subheadings These may be used and should be typed at the beginning of the section on the first line of text with the first letter in uppercase, all others in lower case. The heading should be italicised.
6. Papers should include Tables figure titles and Figures at the end of the text. If Figures are drafted please send a clear copy of the figures. Figures should be high quality with uniform contrast, appropriate line thickness and suitably sized symbols and legends. Shading of any kind should be avoided in the preparation of the figures. The symbols used in preparation of the figures should be circles, squares and triangles either open (e.g. m, o) or closed (e.g. l, n). Figure titles should not appear on the Figure but on a separate page. Figures for reproduction should be numbered appropriately on the back.
Final versions of papers must be submitted on computer disk along with a paper copy. Prints of all figures must also be included, the maximum size of figures printed in Environmental Technology is 22 cm x 16 cm (one full page), however, half page figures (16 cm x 10 cm) and smaller are much more common. Disk versions are not required as printed copies, provided by authors, will be scanned. Printed copies must be of a quality suitable for publication and it is the authors responsibility to ensure that quality is acceptable. Final papers not in correct format will be rejected by the editor.
7. Formulae can be submitted as camera ready figures (without figure titles, but with clear labelling of the formula and an indication of the formulas position in the text), or, if the author(s) intend to submit the final version using a word processor capable of mathematical typesetting, they may include them in the text.
8. Tables should be included at the end of the main body of text, with appropriate titles and numbers. In electronic versions of manuscripts, they must not be saved in figure format, but constructed with the word processor table function.
9. Figure and Table numbers should be in Arabic script (Figure 4.), formulae should be numbered with roman numerals (iv).
10. Initial submissions may include photocopies of photographs included in the text at the appropriate point. Final submission of original photographs should be of the highest quality in black and white (colour is not acceptable) and be no larger than 150mm x 130mm. Titles should be written in pencil on the back of the photograph and the approximate position of the photograph should be marked in the manuscript.
11. Units: SI units should be used, but alternative units placed in brackets may be used if desired. Consistency is essential. Units should be expressed in exponential form (e.g. mg l-1 rather than mg/l).
12. Chemical nomenclature should conform to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) rules.
13. References should be numbered consecutively in the text e.g. 'It has been suggested [4, 5] that control of lead emissions is best achieved by electrostatic precipitation...' Full References should be arranged by numerical order at the end of the typescript. The authors initials should follow the surname and all authors should be listed (et al. is not acceptable). The references must contain the full titles of papers whether published in a journal, or in a book. In the case of journals, the title should be abbreviated and italicised, the volume should be emboldened, the full page reference should be included and the year of publication should appear at the end. Book titles should be italicised, all editors involved should be listed after the title, with the publishing house, the full page number reference and the year of publication at the end. This form is indicated in the following examples:
14. Manuscripts should be strengthened by stiff cardboard for mailing. Floppy Diskettes should be protected.
COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS
1. Authors are reminded that a paper copy of their final manuscript, including figures ,must be sent with computer disks.
2. Computer diskettes (3.5") should be formatted for either Apple Macintosh or PC format. Microsoft Word is the preferred format, however, the document may also be in rich text format (rtf), no other formats are acceptable. The platform (Macintosh / PC), should be clearly labelled on the diskette along with file names and file type (Word or rtf).
3 Tables should be incorporated within text using the Word, or word processor, table function. Do not incorporate as figures / pictures as editing is not possible.
4. Do not send figures as computer files. A high quality paper copy of all graphics (one per page) must be sent with the text computer files. Figure captions should not appear on the Figures but on a separate page of captions in the text. Figures will be scanned electronically and should be printed in black and white (no greyscales) on white paper. They should be at least half a page of A4 or letter (8?x 11 in.) in size. Black, white and clear hatching are acceptable where needed in bar charts etc. Lines and axes should be bold enough to be clearly visible. Ensure that units on axes are mg l-1 etc., not mg/l.
5. File compression is not acceptable and should not be necessary. Full text tables and figure titles are required on disk, but figures are not.
Authors are strongly advised to download and read the file Instructions for Authors (289Kb) as printed in Volume 20, Number 12. (1999).
ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY SUBMISSION CHECKLIST
The following are the most common errors made by authors in formatting documents for submission. If you check your manuscript against this list prior to submission, you could ensure that your manuscript complies with the Instructions for Authors and this will in turn prioritise for a rapid review by referees.
Corresponding Author must be clearly marked with an asterisk(*). E-mail and/or FAX contact numbers must be provided. Abstract must be 250 words or less, and in English only. Disk copy of manuscript must be provided. Files must be labelled on disk showing the operating system used (DOS or MAC). Files must conform to the Instructions for Authors with text in Microsoft Word or rich text (rtf) format. ALL FIGURES must be of High Quality suitable for reproduction. Printed copies of all figures MUST be included, on separate sheets of suitable size, as described in Instructions for Authors Figure captions should not be included on the Figures., but supplied as text as a separate list. Printed figures should be clearly identified by numbering in pencil on the reverse. Symbols used in figures must conform to Instructions for Authors i.e. (m, o, r) or (l, n, s). Figure axis must be clearly labelled, formulas in axis must have correct sub/super script (e.g. H2SO4 not H2SO4 and mgL-1 not mg/L). Figures must be supplied separate to text for final submission as shown in Instructions for Authors. HIGH QUALITY original, glossy black and white PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS must be supplied where photographs are included in the paper. Colour or disk copies are unacceptable as are photocopies. Your references must be numbered in order of appearance and should be enclosed in square brackets [ ] not round brackets ( ). The numbers of the references within the text must agree with the number in the Reference List at the end of the paper. The references in the Reference List must comply with Instructions for Authors. Journal abbreviations are correct and consistent.
Issue numbers of journals are NOT used (e.g. Environ. Technol., 18, (3) 112-119 (1997) is incorrect the (3) should not be included).
All authors are included in the Reference List - Smith J.J. et al. is NOT acceptable.
Have SI units been used throughout in both text and figures? Be sure to check labels on figure axes and legends in figures comply with units as exponential (mg l-1, NOT mg/l etc.). Keywords (5) must be provided. Can the number of Figures can be reduced? (Consider 5 to be a maximum target value). Can the Manuscript can be shortened? Headings must comply with Instructions for Authors. Define acronyms on first occasion use, do not use acronyms in abstract.
