About the journal

Transfusion Medicine publishes articles on transfusion medicine in its widest context, including blood transfusion practice (blood procurement, pharmaceutical, clinical, scientific, computing and documentary aspects), immunohaematology, immunogenetics, histocompatibility, medico-legal applications, and related molecular biology and biotechnology.

Cover

In addition to original articles, which may include brief communications and case reports, the journal contains a regular educational section (based on invited reviews and state-of-the-art reports), technical section (including quality assurance and current practice guidelines), leading articles, letters to the editor, occasional historical articles and signed book reviews. Some lectures from Society meetings that are likely to be of general interest to readers of the Journal may be published at the discretion of the Editor and subject to the availability of space in the Journal.

Instructions to Authors

The editorial policy of Transfusion Medicine reflects the interests of clinicians, scientists and other professionals working in the field of transfusion medicine. Authors wishing to submit a paper for publication in Transfusion Medicine are asked to follow the guidelines below.

Submission of manuscripts

Papers and editorial correspondence should be sent to the Editor:

Professor D.J. Anstee
Director
Bristol Institute for Transfusion
Sciences
Southmead Road

Bristol, BS10 5ND
UK

Tel: +44 (0) 117 991 2102
Fax: +44 (0) 117 950 6377

A telephone number, a fax number and an e-mail address should be provided to facilitate speedy handling of your manuscript.

Each article should be accompanied by a covering letter, signed by the main author, which states the following: 'The manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors, it is not under active consideration for publication, has not been accepted for publication, nor has it been published, in full or in part (except in abstract form)'. It should be noted that review of articles cannot proceed until the signed statement is received.  A completed copyright assignment form must also be included with the submitted manuscript.

Articles will normally be reviewed by two expert referees and the Editor's decision is final. The Editor will acknowledge the assistance of the referees at the end of each volume of the journal.

Instructions for the preparation of manuscripts are given below. The original and two complete copies must be submitted. If photocopies of any photographs are not adequate for assessment by referees, additional prints of the photographs must also be provided.

Authors should keep a copy of their manuscript for reference. Manuscripts will be kept for 6 months after publication (or rejection) and then shredded, but will be returned within this period at the author's request.

Preparation of manuscripts

Text

Manuscripts should be typed on one side only of A4 paper with wide margins and double-spacing. All pages should be numbered consecutively. The first page should bear the title of the paper (which should be brief) and name of the author(s), together with the name of the hospital, laboratory or institution. A running title of not more than 50 characters (including spaces) should be included.

The name and full postal address of the author for correspondence and offprint requests should be given on the first page; this will appear as a footnote in the journal and the publishers will send the proofs to this author at the given address unless contrary instructions are written on the manuscript.

The second page should give an informative summary of not more than 200 words. Three to six keywords should be listed below the summary for indexing purposes.

The body of the paper should normally be divided into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Subjects Studied, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements and References. SI units should be used throughout and authors should refer to Units, Symbols and Abbreviations published by the Royal Society of Medicine. Units should be expressed in the following way: mg mL-1. Numbers are written in full to nine, numerals are used from 10 upwards. Abbreviations must be written in full at the beginning of a sentence. The 24-hour clock is used. Statistical methods should be defined and any not in common use should be described in detail or supported by references. The Editor reserves the right to make literary changes.

Headings

Sub-headings should be used to guide the reader. The relative importance of headings must be clearly indicated.

Illustrations

These should be referred to in the text as figures using Arabic numbers, e.g. Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc., in order of appearance. Each figure should be marked on the back with its appropriate number, together with the name(s) of the author(s) and the title of the paper. Where there is doubt as to the orientation of an illustration the top should be marked with an arrow. Photographs and photomicrographs should be unmounted glossy prints and should not be retouched. Labelling should be clearly indicated on an overlay or photocopy. Line drawings should be on separate sheets of white paper in black indelible ink (dot matrix illustrations are not permitted); lettering should be on an overlay or photocopy and should be no less than 4 mm high for a 50% reduction. Each figure should have a legend clearly describing it; these legends should be grouped on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.

It is the policy of Transfusion Medicine for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing requires you to complete and return a colour work agreement before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf

If you are unable to download the form please contact the production editor at: TME@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com and they will be able to email or fax a form to you.

Once completed, please return the form to the production editor at the address below:

Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.

Tables

These should include only essential data. Each table must be typewritten on a separate sheet and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, e.g. Table 1, and given a short caption.

References

Only papers closely related to the work presented should be referred to; exhaustive lists should be avoided. In the text references should give the author's surname with the year of publication in parentheses. If more than one reference is cited, they should be in chronological order. Where the reference contains more than two authors, it should be given at each mention in the text with only the first surname plus et al., e.g. Smith et al. (1989). If citing several papers by the same author(s) and from the same year, add a, b, c, etc., after the year of publication, e.g. Smith et al. (1989 a,b). When more than one reference is made in the text to a book or monograph, referring to different pages, etc., each textual reference should contain the author's surname, the year of publication and the appropriate page number; the complete reference is thus cited only at the end of the paper. All references should be brought together at the end of the paper in alphabetical order, with names of all authors, titles of journals given in full and with both first and last page numbers given.

Examples:

Coombs, R.R.A., Mourant, A.E. & Race, R. (1945) A new test for the detection of weak and "incomplete" Rh agglutinins. British Journal of Experimental Pathology, 26, 255-266.

Bowman, J.M., Pollock, J.M. & Biggins, K.R. (1988) Antenatal studies and the management of haemolyticdisease of the newborn. In: Blood Transfusion, Methods in Haematology (ed. Greenwalt, T.J.),17, 163-212. Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh.

Perry, R.M. (1983) The occurrence and significance of platelet and granulocyte specific antibodies in bone marrow transplantation. PhD thesis, University of London.

Unpublished material should be referenced in the text only with the authors name and initials.

Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references: they must check every reference in the manuscript and again in the proofs.

Disks

The journal welcomes submission of accepted manuscripts, including any artwork (see below), on disk. On acceptance of their paper, authors should submit a disk of the final version along with two hardcopy print-outs. The final version of the hard copy and file on disk must be the same. Particular care should be taken to adhere exactly to the journal style in all respects. The editorial office will supply 'Disk Submission' forms on acceptance of a manuscript. Label the disk clearly with the first author's name, manuscript number and title of the paper. Note the software used, the type of computer and any special (non- keyboard) characters used. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph. Turn the hyphenation option off. Always enclose a hard copy of figures and tables. Disks will not be returned to authors.

Electronic Artwork

We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards can be found at www.blacksci.co.uk/elecmed/authors.htm

Proofs

Page proofs will be submitted to the author responsible for proof-correction and should be returned to the Editor within 3 days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted. Twenty-five offprints of each paper are provided free, and additional copies may be ordered when proofs are returned.
