Notes for Contributors Authors should submit three complete copies of their paper, with any original illustrations, to the Editor, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Cardiff Business School, Colum Drive, Cardiff CF1 3EU, or to a member of the Editorial Board. It will be assumed that the authors will keep a copy of their paper. Submission of a paper to the journal will be taken to imply that it presents original, unpublished work not under consideration for publication elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript, the authors agree that the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article have been given to the Publishers, including reprints, photographic reproduction, microfilm, or any other reproduction of a similar nature, and translations. Submissions should be in English, typed in double spacing with wide margins, on one side only of the paper, preferably of A4 size. The title, but not the authors name, should appear on the first page of the manuscript. The publishers encourage submission on disk; however, please ensure that the typescript is exactly the same as the version of the article on disk. Articles should normally be between 7,000 and 8,000 words in length. Tables and figures should not be inserted in the pages of the manuscript but should be on separate sheets. They should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals with a descriptive caption. The desired position in the text for each table and figure should be indicated in the margin of the manuscript. Permission to reproduce copyright material must be obtained by authors before submission and any acknowledgements should be included.
Direct quotations of 40 words or more should start on a separate line and be indented.
Footnotes should be used necessary to avoid interrupting the continuity of the text. They should be numbered consecutively using superscript Arabic numerals. They should appear at the end of the main text, immediately before the list of references.
The Harvard system of referencing uses the name of the author and the date of publication as a key to the full bibliographic details which are set out in the References. When the author's name is mentioned in the text, the date is inserted in parentheses immediately after the name, as in Smith (1970). When a less direct reference is made to one or more authors, both name and date are bracketed, with the references separated by a semi-colon, as in several authors have noted this trend (Smith, 1970; Cook, 1968; Dobbs, 1973). When the reference is to a work of dual or multiple authorship, use Smith and Dobbs (1978) or Jones et al. (1976). If an author has two references published in the same year, add lower case letters after the date to distinguish them, as in Smith (1980a, 1980b). Where appropriate, page numbers should also be provided (Roberts, 1956: 56). Always use the minimum number of figures in page numbers, dates, etc., e.g. 22-4, 105-6 (but 112-13 for teen numbers) and 1968-9.
Submissions should include a reference list, in alphabetical order, at the end of the paper. The content and format should conform to the following examples:
Book: Jones, S. (1989) The Headhunting Business. London: Macmillan.
Multiple author: Evans, P.A.L. and Bartolome, F. (1979) Must Success Cost So Much? New York: Basic Books.
Two references in same year/translated text: Jaspers, K. (1983a) General Human Resource Management (7th edn) Trans. Hoenig, J. and Hamilton, Management. Manchester: Manchester University Press.
Article in edited volume: Davis, S.M. (1989) 'Future Perfect'. In Evans, P., Doz, Y. and Laurent, A. (eds) Human Resource Management in International Firms. London: Macmillan. Article in journal: Laurent, A. (1946) 'The Cross-cultural Puzzle of International Human Resource Management', Human Resource Management, 25: 91-102.
Article in newspaper: The Observer (1988) 'The Key to Human Resource Success'. 2 September, 25.
For any other matters of presentation not covered by the above notes, please refer to the usual custom and practice as indicated by the last few issues of the journal.
On acceptance for publication, authors will be requested to provide a copy of their paper in exact accordance with the conventions listed in the preceding notes. If the final version of the paper is not submitted in accordance with these conventions then publication may be delayed by the need to return manuscripts to authors for necessary revisions. Authors should note that, following acceptance for publication, they will be required to provide not only a hard copy of the final version, but also a copy on a virus-free disk, preferably in MS-Word 6 format, if possible. Authors will also be required to complete a Publishing Agreement form assigning copyright to the Publisher.
Page proofs will be sent for correction to a first-named author, unless otherwise requested. The difficulty and expense involved in making amendments at the page proof stage make it essential for authors to prepare their typescript carefully; any alteration to the original text is discouraged.
Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.
Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors retain a number of other rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies documents. These policies are referred to at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf for full details. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
