About the journal

Cancer Causes & Control is an international refereed journal that both reports and stimulates new avenues of investigation into the causes, control, and subsequent prevention of cancer. By drawing together related information published currently in a diverse range of biological and medical journals, it has a multidisciplinary and multinational approach.
The scope of the journal includes: variation in cancer distribution within and between populations; factors associated with cancer risk; preventive and therapeutic interventions on a population scale; economic, demographic, and health-policy implications of cancer; and related methodological issues.
The emphasis is on speed of publication. The journal will normally publish within 30 to 60 days of acceptance of manuscripts.
Cancer Causes & Control publishes original and review articles, hypotheses, comments, opinions, and letters to the Editor which will have direct relevance to researchers and practitioners working in epidemiology, medical statistics, cancer biology, health education, medical economics and related fields. The journal also contains significant information for government agencies concerned with cancer research, control and policy.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Original articles are considered with the understanding that neither the article nor its essential substance has been or will be published elsewhere before appearing in Cancer Causes & Control as they become copyright of the journal. Manuscripts should be submitted in quadruplicate (manuscripts which are also supplied electronically will receive accelerated processing) to:

Kluwer Academic Publishers
The Journals Editorial Office
Cancer Causes & Control
P.O. Box 990
3300 AZ Dordrecht
The Netherlands

A covering letter should identify the person responsible for negotiations concerning the manuscript and should confirm that the final manuscript has been approved by all authors. Authors may also include names and contact details for appropriate reviewers of the work and indicate any persons to whom the work should not be sent.

Style and Presentation

Manuscripts (in English) should be typed with double spacing (including references) on standard size paper. Authors should take care to express themselves as concisely as possible.

Spelling should conform to Webster‘s International Dictionary and Systeme International (SI) units should be used throughout (although other commonly used units may be added in parentheses). Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and be defined at first mention (for standard abbreviations see the Uniform Requirements referred to above). Generic names should be used for drugs; brand names may be inserted in parentheses.

The title page should include a concise and descriptive title for the paper, the full name(s) of the author(s); the department and institution in which the work was performed; the institutional affiliation of each author; the name and address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed; an abbreviated title; and any acknowledgement of financial support. This should be followed by the abstract page, summarizing in no more than 200 words the Objective of the study, the Methods used, the Results, and the principal Conclusions, and providing 3-5 key words from the Medical Subject Headings of Index Medicus for indexing purposes. The text of the report should then proceed as follows:

Introduction - describe the background of the investigation, citing only essential references, and state the reason(s) for performing this study.

Materials and methods - give sufficient detail for others to repeat the work. Describe new methods in detail; provide references and brief descriptions for previously published methods, including methods of statistical analysis. Confirm that ethical approval was obtained for studies on human subjects.

Results - avoid repetition by presenting data in only one form. Summary numerical data should be accompanied by an indication of variability (e.g., mean SD, mean SE) and all estimates should carry an index of precision (e.g., a confidence interval and no more than one significant digit for decimal values greater than one). The word ‘significant?should be used only in its statistical sense and the level of significance used should be defined.

Discussion - review the results and conclusion of the study in the light of previous published work.

Acknowledgements - Detail contributions, including technical help or other assistance, requiring acknowledgement but not justifying authorship.

References

References should be cited in the Vancouver style, i.e. numbered in the order in which they appear in the text and arranged in numerical order in the reference list. This list must be typed with double spacing and should include: names and initials of all authors when there are six or fewer (when there are more than six authors, list the only first three, followed by et al.), year, full title of the article, journal title abbreviated according to Index Medicus, source of the reference, volume number, page span. For reference cited from books, the chapter title should be followed by the names and initials of the editors, the book title, edition, place of publication, publisher, year and page span.

Examples:

Only accepted papers should be reference; all other material should be referred to in the text as ‘in preparation,?‘personal communication,?or ‘unpublished observations?and should not be included in the reference list (see also Permissions, below). Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references.

Tables and illustrations

All tables and illustrations should be referred to in the text, with appropriate locations indicated in the text margin. Every table should have a descriptive title and, if numerical measurements are given, the units should be included in the column heading. Every figure must be labelled on the back with the author‘s name, figure number and orientation, and should be accompanied by a descriptive legend on a separate page. Line drawings should be supplied in a form suitable for high-quality reproduction at two-thirds of their drawn size. Axes should be labeled clearly; other lettering should be kept to a minimum. Photographs should be glossy prints of high quality with as much contrast as the subject allows. Photomicrographs should be submitted at the correct size for final reproduction. Magnifications should be shown by scale bars. Color illustrations are acceptable, but authors will normally be expected to cover the extra reproduction costs (for current charges contact the Publishers).

Conflict of Interest

Authors are expected to disclose any commercial or other associations that might pose a conflict of interest in connection with the submitted article. Funding sources and institutional or corporate affiliations of the authors should be acknowledged on the title page.

Permissions

Permission in writing should also be obtained for citations of unpublished data, personal communications, and papers still in press. It is the author‘s responsibility to ensure that such permissions are obtained.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail (if no e-mail address is available or appears to be out of order, proofs will be sent by regular mail).

Your response, with or without corrections, should be sent within 72 hours. Please do not make any corrections to the PDF file.
Minor corrections (+/- 10) should be sent as an e-mail attachment to: proofscorrection@wkap.nl. Always quote the four-letter journal code and article number and the PIPS No. from your proof in the subject field of your e-mail.
Extensive corrections must be clearly marked on a printout of the PDF file and should be sent by first-class mail (airmail overseas).

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints (both hard copies and PDF files) can be ordered by means of an offprint order form supplied with the proofs.
