Instructions to Authors
Respiratory Medicine publishes original papers on all aspects of respiratory medicine and appears ten times a year. Accepted papers become the copyright of the Journal and are accepted on the understanding that they have not been published, are not being considered for publication elsewhere and are subject to editorial revision.
Any sale of rights for translation or republication will be negotiated by the publishers on behalf of the author and the net proceeds of any such sale (other than to the author) will be divided equally between the author(s) and the Journal.
Manuscripts should be typewritten, with double spacing and wide margins. In general, articles should conform to the conventional structure of Summary, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and References. Tables and figure legends should be on separate sheets. Accepted manuscripts are retained for three months after publication, then destroyed. Illustrations will be returned to the author if specifically requested.
Manuscripts may be submitted to:
Professor Leif Bjermer University Hospital of Lund Department of Respiratory Medicine & Allergy Lund S-221 85 Sweden Tel: +46 70 2126845 E-mail: respiratory.medicine@lung.lu.se
Number of Copies The original and three copies of the manuscript should be submitted. The author should retain a further copy. Manuscripts should be submitted in English as A4 double spaced typescript with generous margins, complete in all respects, including a title and a suggested running head. The name and address of the author should appear in the exact form required for publication. Please send the original typescript and illustrations together with three photocopies of the typescript and a further three sets of high quality original illustrations.
Title Your title page, numbered as 1, should give the title in capital letters (not exceeding 100 letters), a running title (not exceeding 50 letters) and the authors' names (as they are to appear), affiliations and complete addresses, including postal (zip) codes. The author and address to whom correspondence should be sent must be clearly indicated. Please supply telephone, fax and e-mail numbers for the corresponding author.
Abstracts An abstract of your manuscript, a maximum of 200 words, summarizing the content, should be provided on a separate sheet following the title page.
Reference Format Manuscripts should use the 'Vancouver' style for references, which should be numbered consecutively (in parentheses) in the order in which they are first cited in the text and listed at the end of the paper. For journal references, all authors should be included when there are six or less (first three only when seven or more), followed by the title of article, name of journal abbreviated according to British Standard 4148: 1975 (or left in full), year, volume, and first and last pages. For example:
1. Tockman MS, Anthonisen MD, Wright EC et al. Airways obstruction and the risk of lung cancer. Ann Intern Med1987; 106:512-518.
For book references, the author(s) should be followed by the chapter title (if appropriate), editor(s) (if applicable), book title, place of publication, publisher, year and page numbers. For example:
2. Colby VT, Carrington CB. Infiltrative lung disease. In: Thurlbeck WM, ed. Pathology of the Lung. New York: Thieme Medical Publishers, 1988.
Figures For good reproduction glossy photographic prints or clear line drawings (not negatives or photocopies) in black ink on white paper are essential. Illustrations are best supplied larger than final printed size, but lettering must be large enough to be fully legible after reduction. All illustrations should bear on the reverse side author's name and the number of the illustration, also an indication in soft pencil if part only of the illustration is required. Magnification figures should be supplied. Captions should be typed and supplied separately. Permission to reproduce illustrations should always be obtained before submission and details included with the captions.
Tables Tables should be numbered in Arabic numbers, given adequate titles or headings, typed on separate sheets of paper, attached to the manuscript, and should be cited in the text.
Keywords A list of three to six keywords should be supplied.
Units & Abbreviations These should be given in SI units with the traditional equivalent in parentheses where appropriate. Conventions for abbreviations should be those detailed in Units, Symbols, and Abbreviations, available from the Royal Society of Medicine.
Case Reports These should be submitted as detailed above but should not exceed 800 words, and may normally contain only one illustration or table. No summary is required.
Disk/Electronic Submission After review, authors requested to resubmit should, where possible, supply the editorial office with a copy of the manuscript on disk together with 4 typescript copies. Ensure the disk and typescript match exactly. The Editor will accept a 3.5 inch disk in any IBM or Macintosh word processing format. Please indicate on the label attached to your disk, your name, address, typescript title and name of the word processing package used.
Please ensure that all sections of your article are in a single file in the order set out above and with references in the correct style. Tables, with their captions, and figure legends should be supplied on disk in a separate file. Line illustrations may be supplied on disk but must be in a separate file and not embedded in the text. Photographic prints will be handled separately and should not be supplied on disk.
Copyright Information Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright of the paper shall be assigned to the Publisher. The Publisher will not put any limitation on the personal freedom of the author to use material contained in the paper in any other works which may be published.
Permissions Information If illustrations are borrowed from published sources, written permission must be obtained from both publisher and author, and a credit line giving the source added to the legend. If text material totalling 250 to 300 words, or any tables, are borrowed verbatim from published sources, written permission is required from both publisher and author. With shorter quotations, it is sufficient to add a bibliographic credit. Permission letters for reproduced text or illustration must accompany the manuscript. If you have been unable to obtain permission, please point this out.
Proofs Proofs of each paper will be sent to the first named author only, except in the case of specific requests to the contrary. Only minor corrections are acceptable at this stage.
Offprints Quotations for reprints are supplied with the proofs and orders should be returned to the publisher with the proofs. Payment must be made with the order.
