About the journal

Human Resource Management Journal aims to promote the theory and practice of HRM, to provide an international forum for discussion and debate, and to stress the critical importance of people management to a wide range of economic, political and social concerns. HRMJ’s focus lies in providing a critical link between high quality academic research and the practical implications for business practice. It has become essential reading for everyone involved in personnel, training and human resource management and is the only HRM journal to be endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.


 

Aims and Scope


 

Human Resource Management Journal is a scholarly journal which seeks to promote the understanding of HRM to academics and practicing managers. It aims to provide an international forum for discussion and debate and to stress the critical importance of people management to wider economic, political and social concerns. The journal is essential reading for everyone involved in personnel, training and human resource management and is the only HRM journal to be endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

From 2006, HRMJ has also broadened its editorial scope to become more globally orientated and has strengthened the international character of its Editorial Board.

HRMJ seeks to publish scholarly articles on any aspect of employment studies but especially those focused on issues related to the management of people at work. Articles should make a substantive contribution to contemporary issues, incorporate good use of theory and research, and offer well-founded conclusions with practical implications. The journal is particularly interested in articles which will appeal to an international readership. Critical reviews are also welcomed, especially those pointing to how theory and practice can be developed further.

Instructions to Authors

Human Resource Management Journal seeks to publish well-written, well-researched and well-informed articles on any aspect of employment studies but especially those focused on issues related to the management of people at work. Articles should appeal both to practitioners and academics by virtue of their contribution to contemporary issues, the good use of theory and research and well-founded conclusions and practical implications. Critical reviews are also welcomed, especially those pointing to how theory and practice can be developed further.

Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (maximum), including cover page, abstract, tables, figures and bibliography, and should conform to HRMJ style. An abstract of circa 100 words should also be provided. Articles should also conform to HRMJ:

Tables, figures and graphs should be given appropriate, clear titles and show the source and base numbers for percentages. These should be supplied on separate pages at the end of the paper with their position in the text clearly marked ‘put table one here’. Mathematical notations should be provided in both symbols and words.

Please note that titles may be changed to accommodate length constraints, avoid repetition and attract readers. Normally this will be done in consultation with authors.

References in Articles
There are several software packages available to help authors manage and format the references and footnotes in their journal article. We recommend the use of a software tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

References in the text should give the name of the author(s) referred to, the year of publication and the page number(s). For example, 'as Pfeffer (1998: 165) has argued . . .', or 'many studies on HR and performance (see, for example, Huselid, 1995: 643; Guest et al, 2000: 74) . . .'

If there is more than one reference to the same author and year, use letters (a, b, c) to distinguish the publications, for example, Boxall, 2000a.

References cited in the text should be supplied on a separate page which is headed ‘References’; they should be listed alphabetically, by author, and for each author by year of publication. Please use the following format:

  • For books: Legge, K. (1995). Human Resource Management, Rhetoric and Realities, Basingstoke: Macmillan.
  • For chapters in books: Kessler, I. (2000). ‘Reward systems’, in J Storey (ed), Critical Approaches to Human Resource Management, Oxford: Blackwell.
  • For articles in journals: Wood, S. (1995). ‘Can we speak of high commitment management on the shop floor?’ Journal of Management Studies, 32: 2, 26-42.

Submissions
Articles should be submitted online in Microsoft Word format, double-spaced, with pagination. The title should be given at the top of the first page without the author's name or affiliation. A separate title page should contain the title, author's name(s), work address, email and title. Any acknowledgements should also be included on the title page rather than the main document.An abstract of 100-150 words should be provided on a separate page. Tables, figures and legends should be placed at the end of the article.

All articles are double blind-refereed. In most cases a considered response from the editor with referees' comments can be expected within three months of submission.
