About the journal
Learned Publishing is a major international journal, packed with the latest ideas and informed opinion to help you maximise new opportunities. The journal publishes 6-7 informed, topical articles in each issue plus reports on major initiatives and developments in the industry from around the world. Editorials, peer-reviewed research and other articles, personal views and book reviews cover all the major issues facing the world of academic publishing today.
Its readers are not-for-profit and commercial publishers worldwide and members of other professions involved with scholarly publishing ' librarians, academic authors and teachers, and subscription agents ' as well as printers and other suppliers of services to book and journal publishers.
Instructions to Authors
"Learned Publishing gets my work expeditiously into print with class, courtesy and style . I am full of appreciation. It is also a beautiful publication." David Gordon Wilson, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
"My article arose out of an invitation from the editor ¡ members of the editorial staff were responsible for the initiation of this project, and they provided very helpful constructive criticisms of early drafts (much more helpful than many of the comments that I've received from conventional peer reviewers in the past!)." Jim Till, University of Toronto
The Editor of Learned Publishing welcome articles, short opinion pieces, comments and letters on all aspects of academic publishing. Articles should generally be between 2,000 and 5,000 words, with an abstract of not more than 150 words.
ALPSP copyright policy
Authors are asked to sign a Licence to Publish which allows them to retain copyright. A copy of this licence is available from the Editor, may be viewed at Licence to Publish [PDF], and is printed in Learned Publishing 2000:13(2) Apr, 74.

Care in preparation can help to speed up processing times. Authors are requested to read the following guidelines before submitting their work.
Presentation of material
Type material in Word, double spaced, leaving wide margins. Type subheadings on separate lines, full left, underlined (not in capitals). Do not format or right justify text. Send copy as an email attachment to the Editor: editor@alpsp.org (If you have problems with attachments send the text in the body of the email.) If you do not have access to email, send a disk accompanied by a print-out, or two paper copies typed as described above, to the Editor, Robert Welham, 7 High Street, Saffron Walden, CB10 1AT, UK.
Affiliation
Include your affiliation as you wish it to appear in the journal. In addition, please remember to include details of your postal, phone, fax and e-mail addresses to aid communication.
Artwork
Black and white illustrations (line diagrams or photographs) are welcome. Figures should preferably be supplied in TIFF or Postscript format at a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Hardcopy artwork and photographs can be sent, unfolded, in a stiff envelope, and identified by writing on a sticky label and attaching it to the back of the artwork. Provide captions and the name of the photographer where applicable.
Bibliographical references
Use initial capitals for titles and italicize (or underline) references to book and journal titles in both text and references. Indicate bibliographical references in the text by superior numerals in consecutive order. Type each corresponding reference number at the end of the article followed only by the relevant bibliographical information. References should contain enough information to enable readers easily to access the quoted source. This is especially important when citing research reports, newsletters, articles etc. A reference to a journal article should begin with the author's surname followed by forename or initials, and the title of the article, the name of the periodical followed by the year and volume number, issue number in parentheses, full date (if a daily or weekly), abbreviated month (if available), and inclusive page numbers - for example:
Doyle, Mark. Pragmatic citing and linking in electronic scholarly publishing. Learned Publishing 2000:13(1) Jan, 5-14
Abbreviations
Points after abbreviations should be the minimum necessary to a avoid ambiguity and achieve readability. Acronyms should normally be spelt out at their first appearance in an article.
Dates
Use the minimum number of characters. For example: 3 January 1997 or 1995-7. Months should not normally be abbreviated in the text of articles.
Numerals
Separate thousands with a comma (e.g. 6,000) and spell out up to and including ten except for numerals preceding units of measurement (e.g. 6 cm, seven scientists).
Lists
Flush left. Arabic numerals with point (no parenthesis). Subsidiary sequence lower case letters in parentheses indented.
Quotations
Single quotes; double within single. Longer quoted material should be indented without quotation marks.
Spelling
Follow the Oxford English Dictionary (-ize when optional)
