About the journal
|
Journal of Molecular Recognition (JMR) publishes original research papers and reviews describing molecular recognition phenomena in biology. Molecular recognition refers to the non-covalent specific interaction between two or more biological molecules exemplified by receptor-ligand, antigen-antibody, DNA-protein, sugar-lectin and many other interactions. Biomolecular interactions are studied both at the structural level in terms of atomic coordinates and at the functional level in terms of kinetic and equilibrium binding constants. The journal will focus on studies that aim to achieve a complete description of recognition sites in terms of the structure, dynamics and activity of biomolecules.
JMR will provide a forum for research papers in the field of quantitative biomolecular interaction analysis using biosensors and other solution or surface-mediated experimental techniques including microcalorimetry. Since the understanding of molecular recognition at a microscopic level can be aided by theoretical approaches, including electrostatic analysis, and molecular dynamics and free energy simulations, these aspects will also be covered. In addition, submission of manuscripts related to the application of other instrumental methods, such as HPLC, LC-MS, CE-MS, employed in the elucidation of the biophysical basis of the pathways of molecular recognition between interacting biological molecules are encouraged.
The design, synthesis and application of structural or topological mimics of naturally occurring molecules in the characterisation of molecular recognition processes represents a further aspect encompassed by the Journal. These technologies in conjunction with crystallography, NMR and site directed mutagenesis are providing new insights into the correlation between atomic structure and binding energy and pave the way to improved computer simulation, docking and molecular design of biologically active molecules. JMR will also publish articles on the applications of chemically and biologically generated molecular libraries to the study of biomolecular interactions and the creation of novel functions.

Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit four copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to one of the Associate Editors or to the Editor-in-Chief, taking into account their areas of expertise (listed on the Editorial Board). Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
The journal publishes Reviews and Research Articles. Reviews will usually be written at the invitation of the Editor-in-Chief or an Associate Editor. Authors wishing to submit a review are advised to first consult one of the Editors. Research Articles will describe in detail original data in the fields covered by the journal. Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Receipt of papers will be acknowledged. Submitted material will not be returned to the author, unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. Where available, send an electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted. Write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use files produced by most word processing packages, but prefer them in Word or WordPerfect format. Submit illustrations in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, preferably in TIFF or EPS format, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them: we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. Present all submissions printed on one side of the paper, double-line spaced with a margin of 3 cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, not be incorporated into the text.
- Include on the title page the full title of the paper, a short title of up to 70 characters and the names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Give the names of any sponsors of the research contained in the paper, along with grant numbers.
- Supply an abstract for all articles. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper.
- Include up to ten keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
- Supply a list of abbreviations used, excluding standard abbreviations.
Nomenclature. For nomenclature, abbreviations, symbols and conventions follow the (identical) guidelines published in J Biol Chem 260:16-42 (1985) and Eur J Biochem 138:9-37 (1984).
Acknowledgments. These should be brief and appear at the end of the paper, before the references.
Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within square brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. Journal titles should conform with the present Index Medicus abbreviations. Full paper titles should be given. References should be listed in the following style:
Cavallaro V, Thompson P, Hearn M. 1998. Solid phase synthesis of cyclic peptides: model studies involving i¨C(i+4) side chain-to-side chain cyclisation. J Peptide Sci 4: 335-343.
Edmundson AB, Harris DL, Guddat LW, Schley BT, Hanson BL, Tribbick G. 1995. In The Antibodies, Vol. 1, Zanetti M, Capra JD (eds). Harwood Academic: Luxembourg; 41-100.
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name, figure number and orientation on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Use hatching, not tints; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible in case of reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing.
When considered necessary by the Editors, two colour illustrations per article will be printed free of charge. The cost of additional colour illustrations printed in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. In order to enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) is reproduced occasionally in the journal or may be printed from this Web site. Copies may also be obtained from the Editor or Publisher.
Further Information. Typeset proofs will be sent to the author specified on the typescript for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. There is no page charge to authors.
