Instructions to Authors
Authors are encouraged to submit their papers electronically to an editor using the online submission system. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. It is important that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the PDF is suitable for reviewing. This will also allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated, however please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork. Moreover, the PDF file may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by email via the website and no paper correspondence is performed. Authors are, however, legally obliged to sign and return a physical transfer of copyright form by conventional mail. To submit your paper online, please go to http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/jlpp.
One or more referee whose names are not normally disclosed to authors assess all contributions. On acceptance for publication papers are subject to editorial amendment. Authors are solely responsible for the factual accuracy of their papers.
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.
Manuscript Preparation General: Manuscripts must be typewritten and double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. For hard copy submissions, good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final hard copy version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
Paper Length: Authors should be brief and should refer to other published work when possible. Papers should be a record of original work and not exceed 3000 words of text. Only when essential should the same information be represented by both a table and a graph. Short communications should be no more than 1000 words accompanied by a brief abstract of around 25-75 words.
Abstracts: Each paper should possess a self-contained synopsis of between 50-200 words.
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers but used sparingly.
Units: SI units should be used wherever possible; the fps or other equivalent should be given in parentheses afterwards if necessary. On graphs, if values are recorded in non-SI units then additional scales in SI units should be used.
Symbols: If a large number of symbols are used it is helpful if authors submit a list of these symbols and their meanings.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". For 2-6 authors, all authors are to be listed at first citation, with "&" separating the last two authors. For more than six authors, use the first six authors followed by et al. Subsequent citations for three or more authors use author et al. In the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form: Gibbons, D.B., Azzopardi, B.J., & Bott, T.R. (1983). Laser tomographic investigation of the entrained liquid in annular two-phase flow. In International Conference on Physical Modelling of Multi-Phase Flow. Coventry: BHRA, Fluid Engineering.
Hervieu, E., & Veneau, T. (1996). Experimental determination of the droplet size and velocity distributions at the exit of the bottom discharge pipe of a liquid propane storage tank during sudden blowdown. Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, 9(6), 413-425.
Perry, R.H., & Green, D. (1984). Perry's chemical engineer's handbook (6th ed.). New York: McGraw Hill.
Zehn, G., & Leuckel, W. (1995). Influence of transient injection induced turbulent flow on gas and dust explosions in a closed vessel, Loss and safety promotion in process industries. In J.J. Mewis, H.J. Pasman, & E.E. De Rademaeker, Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium, Antwerpen (p. 257). Amsterdam: Elsevier.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet. Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations. Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied, in triplicate, as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable. Colour: Colour figures can be accepted at the discretion of the Editors. Authors will be expected to contribute towards the cost of colour printing.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).
Preparation of manuscipts on disk Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final hardcopy version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Furthe information on disk submission and formats can be obtained from http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/disksub or from Author Services at Elsevier.
