Instructions to Authors
General instructions
Authors should submit the manuscript as a pdf-file electronically via ftp or email. It is a fundamental condition that no manuscript submitted has been or will be published elsewhere in any form or language. Manuscripts will be reproduced directly by a photographic process which excludes the possibility of further alteration. If a paper is unsuitable for reproduction, it will be returned for retyping. It is essential that these instructions be followed with the greatest care.
Depending on the country where the corresponding author of a paper resides, please submit the paper to one of three editors:
| Joe Newton (USA) |
USA and Canada |
| Yuichi Mori (Japan) |
Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Papua-Neuguinea, Australia, New Zealand and the rest of Oceania.
|
| Wolfgang Härdle (Germany) |
all countries not listed before |
Manuscripts should be typed or printed in 1 line spacing. Pages should be numbered. The sections summary, footnotes, tables and references must be also in single line spacing: the typing area should under no circumstances be exceeded, but must be used to the full: 11,7 x 18,9 cm.
The manuscript should be set out as follows:
- A 5-cm-wide margin should be left at the top of the first page for the publisher to insert the source data.
- Title of paper.
- Author's name: first name(s), followed by the surname without academic title.
- Author's full postal address.
- Summary (dispensable for short notes), which may be supplemented by key words.
- Text.
- References.
- The total number of pages can not exceed 20 pages.
For the first page see this picture. For LaTeX 2.0.9, WORD 97 and WordPerfect 8 see the table of fonts and the example style files (examples files).

Footnotes should be placed at the bottom of the page to which they refer and should be divided from the text by a horizontal line 2 cm long. They must be inside the typing area.
Figures should be drawn directly on the manuscript page. Good reproduction is achieved only when the lines are drawn very carefully.
In the body of the text references should be quoted with the year of publication in brackets if the name of the author is mentioned in the text, e.g. Smith (1982). Otherwise the name of the authorshould appear in brackets too, e.g. (Smith 1982). All references are to be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper.
They should be cited as follows:
- Journal papers: names and initials of all authors, year, title of paper, abbreviated title of journal, volume number, first and last page numbers; e.g. Embrechts, P. and Herzberg, A.M. (1991), Variations of Andrew's Plots. International Statistical Review, 59, 2, 175-194.
- Books: names and initials of all authors, year, title, edition, publisher, place of publication, e.g. Toutenburg, H. (1995), Experimental Design and Model Choice, Physica-Verlag Heidelberg.
Thirty (30) offprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge; additional offprints can be ordered from the publisher after the paper has been accepted for publication.

Example files

Some notes for LaTeX users
- The style file may work well with LaTeX 2e, we did not test it.
- To generate the PostScript file examcs.ps in LaTeX, you need the compstat and the harvard style! The examcs.bbl is generated by BIBTEX
- We would advise you to use the harvard.sty for citations and the epsfig.sty for including PostScript graphics in your text. Both styles are public and available from CTAN servers:
- Heidelberg, Germany (ftp, gopher, e-mail)
- Texas, USA (ftp, gopher, e-mail, NFS, WWW)
- United Kingdom (ftp, gopher, NFS, WWW)
or mirror sites of those archives. In order to reduce network load, it is recommended that you use the CTAN host which is located in the closest network proximity to your site.
