About the journal

Meteorologische Zeitschrift is a journal open to original English-language manuscripts from all fields of atmospheric sciences, covering meteorology and climatology, including the interaction of the lower atmosphere with the oceans, the land surfaces, and the middle and upper atmosphere. Short contributions and review articles are particularly invited. Six issues are published per annum and form one volume. Papers published in this journal are expected to make interesting and novel contributions from all topics of meteorology, including theoretical and experimental investigations, numerical simulations, statistical studies, information about operational work in meteorological services and on applied meteorology. Contributions on the philosophy and history of atmospheric sciences are also welcome. In addition to original papers and short communications, review articles, special reports, book reviews, laudatory articles, and obituaries are published. Special issues on specific topics or conferences may be published as feasible. Papers must not have been published previously. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their papers.

Meteorologische Zeitschrift was founded in 1866 by ``Österreichische Gesellschaft für Meteorologie' (ÖGM); starting 1886 it was published jointly with the ``Deutsche Meteorologische Gesellschaft' (DMG). The German, Austrian and Swiss Meteorological Societies refounded the Journal in 1992, thereby merging Meteorologische Rundschau and Zeitschrift für Meteorologie (published by the Meteorological Society of the former GDR) into Meteorologische Zeitschrift. Since January 2000, the journal is published merged with Beiträge zur Physik der Atmosphäre (cited as Contributions to Atmospheric Physics) under its previous title Meteorologische Zeitschrift.

Our online manuscript submission and review system offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process.

Manuscripts have to be submitted to the manuscript management system.

Open Access

Authors may have their articles made freely available online against charges (Optional Open Access, OOA).
To publish a paper under the Borntraeger Optional Open Access model (OOA), the following guidelines apply:

Authors must inform the Technical Editor prior to or with the submission of the final, corrected manuscript at the latest, that they choose Optional Open Access for their paper.

The OOA-charge for a paper of up to and including six printed pages is 995,-- Euro. Additional pages will be charged at 166,-- EUR each.

If the wish to participate in OOA is expressed after the production process has started (=submission of final ms to the Technical Editor), an additional service charge of 20,-- Euro per printed page will be levied.

No further page charges for black and white pages (color pages still carry the usual page charges). Authors receive an invoice for applicable OOA-charges for their paper, indicating its DOI for linking to, citing and downloading. No separate PDF's will be made available by the publisher.

Paper reprints are available at cost price only.

Upon receipt of payment of the OOA-charges, access restrictions to the online version of the paper are lifted.
