Instructions to Authors
Final manuscripts must be 2, 4, 6 or 8 pages in length and be submitted in three camera ready copies for direct photographic reproduction in the Journal. Two copies of the manuscripts must accompany the original. Alternatively, typographic instructions for the manuscript may be submitted as a Postscript or Windows RTF file (specifying US Letter size paper) on an IBM-compatible 3.5¡± diskette. Manuscripts can also be submitted by fax for initial editorial review of the format. However, this must be followed by submission of hard copy, with any corrections specified by the editors. The manuscript must be prepared using a word processor and printed in accordance with the instructions below using black type on good quality white bond paper. Only manuscripts printed from a laser printer or ink-jet printer will be accepted. The entire final manuscript must be written only in Times typeface; no other typeface than Times will be permitted. Manuscript from Europe should be sent to Dr. R.J. Leatherbarrow, from North America and the Americas to Prof. B.M. Dunn and from Asia & Australasia to Prof. J.D. Wade. For a listing of the Editor's addresses/e-mails please refer to the Editorial page of the journal.
CRYSTALLIZATION REPORTS: Papers describing crystallization and preliminary diffraction studies on proteins of hitherto unknown structure, or on significant mutants or ligand complexes of known structures, are acceptable for publication. Crystallization reports should include data describing the source of the protein, composition, pH and concentrations of precipitants and buffers etc., the method employed, crystal size and morphology, and time of growth etc. Unit cell dimensions, space-group assignments, resolution limit, specific volume and asymmetric unit contents must also be provided.
SHORT REVIEWS: Protein and Peptide Letters will publish short reviews on all aspects of the state-of-the-art science of proteins and peptides. Manuscripts featuring short reviews of 8-14 pages in length may be submitted openly without prior invitation by the Editor-in-Chief. It is advisable that authors first submit a short abstract of their review topic to Prof. Ben M. Dunn prior to submitting the whole manuscript.
PAGE LAYOUT: The typing area of page 1, including the title must be 19 cm wide by 24 cm deep. The typing area of the remaining pages must be extended to cover an area of 19 cm wide by 26 cm deep (using 8.5¡± x 11¡± paper or A4). Manuscripts will be reduced by a factor of 25% and the journal margins are provided during reproduction.
TITLE: The title should be entirely in capital letters, in bold, using 18 points boldface type, single spaced and centered on the width of page 1 with title 2 cm (three 18-point blank lines) from the top of the page. The title should not exceed three lines.
AUTHORS: The authors¡¯ names should appear two 12-point blank lines below the title, in 12-point Times boldface type, single spaced and centered on the width of the page, with the first letter of each word in capital letters. The corresponding author(s) should be indicated by an asterisk (*).
ADDRESS: The authors¡¯ addresses should appear two 12-point blank lines below the authors¡¯ names, in Times 12-point, single spaced and centered on the width of the page, with the first letter of each work in capital letters.
ABSTRACT: An abstract of not more than five lines should begin five 12-point blank lines below the address, in Times 12-point type and single spaced. Text should be justified ¡°full-out¡± to both margin.
Key Words: Authors must supply up to eight key words along with their manuscript.
TEXT: The main body of the text should begin three 12-point lines below the abstract. The entire text must be written in Times 12-point type with one and a half line spacing and justified ¡°full-out¡± to both margins. Authors may subdivide the main body of the manuscript into sections as they feel appropriate, but should avoid unnecessary fragmentation. Each new section should begin on a new line and be preceded by the section name in boldface type. The paragraphs should not be separated by a blank line.
ILLUSTRATIONS: Colored illustrations and plates can be published from 35 mm color slides. Figures should be 70 mm or 180 mm wide wherever possible. Photographs of biological systems should be provided with a scale bar, where required. One color plate will be published free of charge in each article, provided color is deemed scientifically necessary by the Editor-in-Chief. Additional color figures will be charged to the author. The cost for the first additional published page of color figures is US $605; the second additional page will be US $440, and each subsequent page, US $303.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: The word Acknowledgements in bold face should follow the manuscript and precede references. The acknowledgement section must be typed in single spaced Times 12-point type,full-out to both margins.
REFERENCES: The word References in Times 12-point boldface type should clearly mark the reference section which should be typed in single spaced Times 12-point type. All references must be numbered in the text in square brackets, e.g. [4], or [7-10,15], in order of citation in the text. Titles of journals are abbreviated according to Chemical Abstract Service Source Index.

Abstracts, unpublished data and personal communications (which can be only included if permission has been obtained) should not be given in the references section but they may be mentioned in the text and details provided as footnotes. All authors of referenced papers must be cited and there must be no use of the short hand version of et al. when citing authors.
FIGURES, TABLES, etc.: Figures, graphs, formulae and tables may be pasted onto spaces of the text exactly as the page will appear in the Journal. These must be large enough to read when the manuscript is photo-reduced by 25%. Figures and formulae should be drawn with special care. Drawings and formulae that are unclear will be returned for modification. Photographs of biological systems should be provided with a scale bar, where required.
SEQUENCE AND COORDINATE DATA: Nucleic acid and protein sequences, and atomic coordinates for crystal structures may be deposited with a database prior to manuscript submission. Appropriate databases are GenBank and EMBL for sequence: Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC), or Brookhaven Protein Data Bank for atomic coordinates.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION: Two copies of the manuscript must accompany the original along with the soft copy of the manuscript on a computer floppy disk(s) in MS Word file format (or created in any other well-known word processing software) should be submitted. To achieve rapid publication authors are encouraged to e-mail or fax their submission to the appropriate editorial office (see above) at the same time that they mail the manuscript. For even faster publication, authors are encouraged to submit their entire manuscript via Bentham¡¯s online submission service (see below).
