About the journal

The journal is meant for ecologists who, because of their research interests or occupation, are involved in designing, monitoring, or constructing ecosystems. It is meant to serve as a bridge between ecologists and engineers, as ecotechnology is not wholly defined by either field. The journal will be read and contributed to by applied ecologists, environmental scientists and managers and regulators, natural resource specialists (e.g. foresters, fish and wildlife specialists), environmental and civil engineers, agroecologists, and landscape planners and designers. The journal is also for engineers who, as a result of training and/or experience in biological and/or ecological sciences, are involved in designing and building ecosystems. The journal is of particular interest to practising environmental managers due to its multidisciplinary approach to practical problems and opportunities.

Ecological engineering has been defined as the design of ecosystems for the mutual benefit of humans and nature. Specific topics covered in the journal include: ecotechnology; synthetic ecology; bioengineering; sustainable agroecology; habitat reconstruction; restoration ecology; ecosystem conservation; ecosystem rehabilitation; stream and river restoration; wetland restoration and construction; reclamation ecology; non-renewable resource conservation. Applications of ecological engineering (or ecotechnology) include wetland creation and restoration, pollution control by ecosystems, restoration and rehabilitation of forests, grasslands, lakes, reservoirs and rivers, and development of sustainable agroecosystems. Because ecological engineering is based on the premise of conserving both renewable and non-renewable resources by using both in partnership, the journal will also be pertinent to those involved in global change, alternative energy policies, ecological economics, environmental conservation, and global geopolitics.

The journal welcomes full papers, short communications, comments, letters to the Editor, and will publish review articles upon invitation.

Papers will be published in the English language. The journal will not levy page charges and the senior author of each contribution will receive 50 free reprints.

All papers will be subject to peer review and they will be dealt with as speedily as is compatible with a high standard of presentation.

Audience

Biologists, Applied Ecologists, Environmental Scientists, Civil Engineers, Agroecologists, Landscape Planners.

Instructions to Authors

Types of contributions

Full papers reporting original work.
Short Communications. A means for communicating urgent matter or the reporting of preliminary findings with a minimum of publication delay.
Technical Notes. Very brief descriptions of new, or modifications of existing, techniques which mark major advances and are of practical value.
Letters to the Editor. A means of allowing written discussion of papers published in the journal. Letters are accepted on the basis of originality and timeliness.
Reviews. Critical evaluation of existing data for defined fields of investigation together with considerations of historical development of topics. Those wishing to prepare a review should first consult the Editor concerning acceptability of topic and length.
Proceedings of symposia and/or conferences will be considered for publication. The Editor should be contacted as early as possible to discuss details.

Submission of papers

The original and three copies of the manuscript should be submitted to the following address: Dr W.J. Mitsch, School of Natural Resources, The Ohio State University, 2021 Coffey Road, Columbus, OH 43210-1085, USA. Fax: (614) 488-0136, E-mail: mitsch.1@osu.edu

Manuscripts

English is the official language of the journal. Manuscripts should be typed in double spacing on consecutively numbered sheets of A4 size white paper allowing wide margins of at least 3 cm on both sides as well as top and bottom. The title of the paper should be concise and informative. It should be followed by the author's full name, academic or professional affiliations and addresses. An abstract, not exceeding 200 words, should then follow. It should identify the main points of the paper, not be a repetition of the title and, as far as possible, replace rather than supplement a "concluding" summary. The text should be divided into well-defined sections, each headed by a caption, e.g., Abstract, Introduction, Experimental, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References. Avoid (or define, at first use) any non-standard abbreviations, unfamiliar terms, symbols and acronyms. The telephone and Fax numbers of the corresponding author should be included on the first page of the article. Authors are also requested to provide keywords (5-10) for indexing purposes.

Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.

Electronic manuscripts

It is essential that the floppy disk submitted for publication is the final corrected version of the article and exactly matches the accompanying final manuscript. Illustrations will be handled conventionally. The preferred storage medium is a 5.25 or 3.5 inch disc in MS-DOS (or MS-DOS compatible) format, although other systems are acceptable, e.g., Macintosh. Please specify the type of computer and word-processing package used (do not convert your textfile to plain ASCII). Ensure that the letter "l" and digit "1" (also letter "O" and digit "0") have been used properly, and format your article (tabs, indents, etc.) consistently. Non-standard characters (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should be used consistently throughout the text; please make a list of such characters and provide a key. Do not allow your word processor to introduce word splits and do not use a "justified" layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.

Tables

Tables should be typed in double spacing on separate pages and numbered in arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. Each table should have a brief descriptive heading which makes its general meaning understandable without reference to the text.

Illustrations

The figures should be submitted in a form suitable for reproduction, drawn in Indian ink on drawing or tracing paper with lettering. They should preferably be of such a size that the same degree of reduction can be applied to all of them, and particular care should be taken to make any lettering sufficiently thick and large. Photographs should have good contrast and intensity. Sharp, glossy photographs are required to obtain good halftones. Photographs should be supplied in their final size. Draw bar scales on all micrographs instead of providing a numerical scale in the figure caption. Each illustration should be numbered according to the sequence of its appearance in the text, where they should be referred to as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. Each illustration should have a legend, all the legends being gathered together on a separate sheet.

Units, abbreviations, footnotes

Authors are recommended to use SI units. If non-SI units are used, a conversion factor to SI units should be provided. Authors should follow the recommendations of the IUPAC Manual of Symbols and Terminology for Physico-Chemical Quantities and Units, Pure and Applied Chemistry, 21 (1970) 1, and its appendices. Widely accepted forms of abbreviations should be used. The full expression followed by the abbreviation should be given the first time it appears in the text. Footnotes should only be used if absolutely essential. They must be indicated by asterisks. They should not be numbered and included with the references.

References

References in the text start with the name(s) of the author(s) followed by the publication date in brackets, e.g., Jones (1960) has shown the importance of... or,... has been described (Jones, 1960; Brown, 1961)...; using chronological order. The reference list is in alphabetical order and typed (double-spaced) on sheets separate from the text. The full title of the paper should be given. Examples:

Moore, J.N. and S.N. Luoma, 1990. Hazardous wastes from large-scale metal extraction: a case study. Environ. Sci. Technol., 24: 1278-1285.

Novotny, V. and G. Chesters, 1981. Handbook of Nonpoint Pollution: Sources and Management. Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, New York, NY, p. 89.

Abbreviations for the titles of journals should follow the system used by Chemical Abstracts.

Proofs

One set of proofs will be sent to the author to be checked for printer's errors. In the case of two or more authors please indicate to whom the proofs should be sent.

Reprints and page charges

There is no page charge. Twenty-five reprints of Regular Papers, Short Communications and Notes will be supplied free of charge. Additional reprints can be ordered by the authors. An order form containing price quotations will be sent to the author together with the proofs of the article. All contributions will be carefully refereed for international relevance and quality. Submission of an article is understood to imply that the article is original and unpublished and it is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
