About the journal
We cordially invite you to subscribe to the Chemical & Pharmaceutical Bulletin (CPB) and the Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin (BPB), which are the main journals published in English by the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan. Originally, CPB covered all aspects of the pharmaceutical sciences, however, since the topics covered by the journal became increasingly diverse, a new sister journal, BPB was created in 1993. Thus, CPB covers physical and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry including natural products chemistry, medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, pharmacognosy, and physical pharmacy, while BPB covers analytical biochemistry, biochemistry/molecular biology, pharmacology, toxicology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy, and biopharmacy.
Instructions to Authors
The Journal will accept original and innovative submissions in English from both members, and non-members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, on the understanding that the work is unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPT The Journal publishes Regular Articles, Notes, Communications, and Reviews. With the exception of Invited Reviews, manuscripts will be reviewed by two or more members of the editorial board, whose opinions will form the basis of the final decision by the editor. It is recommended that an English check of the manuscript by a native speaker has been completed before submission. If English checkers are not available, English check at the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan will be performed.
- Regular Articles: New, significant, innovative, and original findings are suitable as Regular Articles.
- Notes: Papers containing new facts and important data derived from incomplete or partial studies may be suitable as a Note. In general, the papers should not exceed 4 printed pages.
- Communications: Communications should contain new and important information that interests readers of theJOURNAL and urgent publication is desirable. An explanatory statement is required for urgent publication. In general, the papers should not exceed 2 printed pages. Indicate "Communication" in red on the envelope.
- Reviews:
i) Regular Reviews: Describing the research results of the author. ii) Invited Reviews: Reviews are submitted by invitation from the editorial board, and encompass recent important scientific discoveries.
- SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
- All manuscripts (in duplicate) should be submitted to:
- Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin Editorial Office
- The Pharmaceutical Society of Japan
- 2¨C12¨C15, Shibuya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150¨C0002, Japan
- MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
- 1. Manuscript Form. All manuscripts should be typewritten in English on A4-size white paper, double spaced. All subsequent pages should be numbered consecutively.
- i) Title Page. The title page (page 1) should start with the type of manuscript (Regular Article, Notes etc.). This should be followed by the appropriate section for the manuscript (i.e. one of the follows: Analytical Biochemistry, Biochemistry/Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Biopharmacy, Miscellaneous.), the title, name(s) of the author(s) and affiliation, mailing address, and E-mail address. An asterisk (*) should be added to the right of the corresponding author's name. For contribution from Japan, the corresponding author's name and address in Japanese, telephone number, fax number, and E-mail address should be given at the bottom right.
- Examples of affiliation and mailing address are as follows:
- a Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Taipei Medical University; b Department of Pharmacology, Taipei Medical University; c Department of Pathology, Taipei Medical University; and d Graduate Institute of Biomedical Technology, Taipei Medical University; No. 250, Wu-Shing St., Taipei 110, Taipei, Taiwan.
- ii) Summary and Keywords. Page 2 should contain a summary of less than 250 words and 3 to 6 descriptive keywords, listed in order of importance. The first 3 keywords must be independent, as they will be used in a keyword combination in the index (less than 80 characters).
- iii) Main Text. The text, acknowledgments, and references should be presented in this order. Figures, tables, and charts showing chemical structures should be collected at the end, each on a separate sheet. All pages should be numbered consecutively.
- 2. Figures, Tables and Charts Showing Chemical Structure. In principle, figures, tables, and charts showing chemical structures prepared by the author(s) will be used in the printed version of the journal. All chemical structures, figures, and tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers, and figure titles and legends are to be typed consecutively on a separate sheet. All figures, tables and charts should be prepared on A4-size white paper.
- 3. Abbreviations. Abbreviation must be spelled out in full at their initial appearance, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter, the abbreviation may be employed.

X-RAY CRYSTAL STRUCTURE ANALYSES When structure determination by X-ray crystallographic analysis is a central theme of the paper, the data required for registration with the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) should be attached as supplementary material. Although this does not apply in cases where crystallographic analysis plays only a supplementary role, crystal data (unit cell parameters, space group, Z density) and R-factor should still be noted. Atomic coordinates will be printed when the structure is important. Bond lengths and angles, thermal parameters, and torsion angles will be printed when they are important for the issues addressed in the paper. When papers have been accepted, the authors are advised to register the data with CCDC.
ETHICS In scientific investigations involving human subjects, experiments should be performed in accordance with the ethical standards formulated in the Helsinki Declaration of 1964 (revised in 2000,cf. http://ohsr.od.nih.gov/).Similarly, animal experiments should follow the ethical standards formulated in the guidelines issued by the Science and International Affairs Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, No. 141, 1987: "Animal Experiments in Universities etc."
