Instructions to Authors
Nutrition provides an international forum for professionals interested in the field of applied and basic nutritional sciences, and reflects current research results and practices of nutrition in its widest sense. Constant components of Nutrition include reports of original investigations, a broadly based review on a relevant nutrition topic, a nutrition/metabolism classic accompanied by a relevant prospective overview, and editorials which usually relate to material in the current issue. Other frequent components include special articles, case reports, letters to the editor, and proceedings of meetings. It is the intent that all published material both enhance the education of and increase the nutritional awareness of its readers. Potential authors are encouraged to consider topics relevant to women and ethnic minorities, technology transfer, and ethical considerations pertinent to medical nutrition. Manuscripts incorporating applications of outcomes research are especially welcome.
Manuscript Preparation
Manuscripts are copyedited in accordance with the CBE Style Manual, Chicago Manual of Style, and Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition. Terminology related to nutritional support follows the style of the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
Manuscripts must be written in English. Manuscripts are accepted for consideration with the understanding that they have not been published elsewhere except in abstract form and are not concurrently under review elsewhere.
Authors are requested to suggest the names of two or three potential referees. All manuscripts are subject to peer review and approval by the editorial board; the decisions rest on the scientific merit of a contribution, the likelihood of its interest to the journal's readers, and its intrinsic contribution to the literature on the subject.
Manuscripts should be typewritten, using DOUBLE SPACING and 1-inch margins, on 8?x 11 inch bond paper. Pages should be arranged and numbered consecutively starting with the title page.
Body of Manuscript should include:
Title Page Structured Abstract Introduction Methods and Materials (including statistical methods used) Results Discussion Summary (50 words) References
Title Page
This should include 1) title of paper, 2) running head of fewer than 55 letter spaces, 3) name of author(s) including first name and highest academic degree(s), 4) acknowledgment for research support, 5) the complete mailing address (including telephone and Fax numbers and e-mail address, if available) of one author for correspondence, mailing of proofs and reprint requests. The title of the paper must not be presumptive or pejorative (as in, "Nutrient X Cures Disease Y").
Structured Abstract
It is the opinion of the Nutrition Editorial Board that structured abstracts, that is, abstracts that describe a study using requisite content headings, provide more informative content than the traditional alternative. In addition, their use has the potential of improving the content and organization of the manuscript itself, because of increased awareness by authors, reviewers and editors of important areas of focus. The structured abstract should be organized as follows:
Objective. The abstract should begin with a clear statement of the precise objective or question addressed in the paper. If a hyposthesis was tested, it should be stated.
Research Methods & Procedures. The basic design of the study and its duration should be described. The methods used should be stated and the statistical data/methods provided.
Results: The main results of the study should be given in narrative form. Any measurements or other information that may require explanation should be defined. Any important information not included in the presentation of results should be declared. Levels of statistical significance should be indicated, as well as any other factors crucial to the outcome of the study.
Conclusion(s) of the study that are directly supported by the evidence reported should be given along with the clinical application, and speculation.
Acknowledgments
Acknowledge only persons who have made substantive contributions to the study. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission of everyone acknowledged by name. If the name of the individual performing statistical consultation is not included with authors, acknowledgment must include name and degree of statistician. Acknowledge any and all sources of direct and indirect support for the work represented by the manuscript; this will include commercial, institutional, and other forms of support.
Units of Measurement: Authors of articles must express all measurements in Systeme Internationale (SI) units, but they may include older conventional units in parentheses if they desire.
References
References: Number references sequentially in the order in which they first appear in the text. REFERENCES MUST BE TYPED DOUBLE SPACED. Use the form of citations adopted by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and used in Index Medicus. Use Index Medicus style for abbreviations of journal titles and for punctuation of references. When there are six or more authors, list only the first three and add et al.
Reference examples are as follows:
Aulick H, Wilmore DW. Increase in peripheral amino acid release following burn injury. Surgery 1979;85:56
Fong Y, Lowry SF. Metabolic consequences of critical illness. In: Barie PS, Shires GT, eds. Surgical intensive care, 1st ed. Boston:Little, Brown, 1993:898
Reports of original investigations should limit references to 25 unless by special arrangement at the time of manuscript review. Review articles should limit the references to a total of 75. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references, since the editorial office is unable to check these in appropriate detail. A copy of the first page of each bibliographic citation will be required (as proof of reference accuracy) prior to final publication.
For references to articles in press, supply the name of the journal. References to unpublished material, including written (not verbal) personal communications, should be included parenthetically in the text with investigator's names and initials.
Illustrations
Tables: These should be typed DOUBLE-SPACED with each table on a separate page. Legends should contain sufficient information to provide an adequate understanding of the table by the reader without reference to the text.
Figures and other graphic material: Must be either 1) good quality unmounted glossy prints usually 5 by 7 inches (12.7 by 17.3 cm), or 2) computer-generated graphics from a laser printer on sturdy bond paper -- computer graphic printouts from dot matrix or daisywheel printers are unsatisfactory. Manuscripts containing illustrations unsuitable for reproduction will be returned to the authors without review, because they are not suitable for publication. Do not send original artwork or negatives. All photographic material, whether of patients, apparatus, or microphotographs of histologic material, should be good quality unmounted glossy prints usually 5 x 7 inches (12.7 x 17.3 cm). Illustrations and photographs should be identified by pasting a label on the back that includes figure number, first author's name, and an arrow indicating the top for orientation.
Black and white illustrations will be produced without additional cost to the author; material in color can be published only if the authors defray the extra costs of printing.
Submit one set of original figures and three (for a total of four) illustrations and/or photocopies in a heavy-duty envelope.
All material submitted must have been originally produced with proportions that will remain legible when reduced to the width of a one-half page column in the final publication (Column width: 20 picas, 3⅓", 8.3 cm).
Figure legends must be typed DOUBLE-SPACED.
Copyright
Copyright: Publications are made subject to copyright for the protection of the authors and the publisher. A Transfer of Copyright Agreement will be sent to the corresponding author. The form must be completed and returned to the publisher before the article can be published.
Manuscript Submission
Regular mail: Authors should submit an IBM-compatible (sorry--no Macintosh please) 3? computer disk to the editorial office along with three hard copies of the manuscript. Once the paper has been refereed, revised as needed, and accepted, a disk and hard copy should be sent of the final version. Both should be labeled "final revision." Make certain that the disk and hard copy match exactly (otherwise the diskette version will prevail). Specify what software was used, including which release, e.g., MS Word 7.0. Specify what computer was used. The article file should include all textual material (text, references, tables, figure captions, etc.) and separate illustration files, if available. Be sure to keep a back-up disk for reference and safety. If unable to provide disk, please contact the Managing Editor.
Electronic Submissions: Papers may be submitted electronically via e-mail attachment, in IBM-compatible format only. Software used may be MS Word, WordPerfect, a text file, or PDF. Send papers to nutrtn1@upstate.edu. All illustrations should also be sent by regular mail in order to insure their accuracy.
In the letter of transmittal include the following statement: "The principle author and all co-authors (if any) hereby transfers, assigns and conveys all interest in and ownership of copyright ("title of paper)" to Nutrition: The International Journal of Applied and Basic Nutritional Sciences until such time and unless said manuscript is rejected in writing by Nutrition." The letter should make it clear that the final manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors and that they have taken due care to ensure the integrity of their work and their scientific reputation. The letter must be signed by all co-authors, or duplicate letters must be submitted if obtaining all signatures on the same letter is impractical.
Unless otherwise noted (see "Alternatives" section below) manuscripts should be submitted to your regional editorial office:

Alternatives to Full-Length Original Research Paper
Nutrition publishes on a number of nutrition-related topics in a variety of formats, including the following:
Research Letters: Nutrition separates the two types of correspondence that formerly appeared as Letters to the Editor. A Research Letter contains new data or a clinical observation, in a format which allows for rapid publication. All those published are peer reviewed. Nutrition wishes to be flexible but ideally a Research Letter should have no more than 1000 words, a maximum of 10 references, one table or one figure, and no more than five authors. Conflicts of interest should be declared and the signatures of all authors are required. Letters are not acknowledged. A proof will be provided, usually by fax, and the authors must respond immediately because the journal may wish to publish quickly.
Correspondence (Letters to the Editor): Letters pertaining to a recent article in the journal are particularly encouraged. Such letters should not duplicate similar material being submitted or published elsewhere and should not contain undefined acronyms or abbreviations. Submission of a letter constitutes permission for Nutrition to use it in the journal. Unpublished material will not be returned to the author.
International Ward Rounds in Clinical Nutrition: Interesting case reports of educational value, consisting of case report and management, rationale for nutritional management, and reference to literature citation. Please submit to:
Gordon Jensen, MD, PhD Director, Vanderbilt Center for Human Nutrition Vanderbilt University Medical Center 514 Medical Arts Nashville TN 32212 USA Tel: (615)936 1295 Fax: (615)343 1587 E-mail: gordon.jensen@mcmail.vanderbilt.edu
Preliminary Reports: Contributors are encouraged to submit articles of original work in a concise form as preliminary reports when appropriate. Articles so submitted and accepted for publication will be published promptly regardless of backlog of regular material, i.e., in the next possible issue following acceptance for publication. Such preliminary reports should not exceed 4 double-spaced typewritten pages of text (excluding title page). Textual material should be appropriately shortened if needed, to allow space for a table or an illustration.
Columns: Nutrition publishes several columns, the topics of which circulate every few years in order to give attention to the large (and ever-increasing) number of areas in which nutrition plays a major role. We are always open to contributions, which should be submitted to the appropriate editor, as well as to new column ideas. Please contact the USA editorial office for more information.
Collections of abstracts, representing the proceedings of organizational meetings, are not subjected to customary peer review. It is the view of the editorial board that it is of service to the nutrition community to present such material as promptly as possible.
Please send questions or comments to NUTRITION at nutrtn1@upstate.edu
