About the journal
International Journal of Climatology
The International Journal of Climatology aims to span the well established but rapidly growing field of climatology, through the publication of research papers, major reviews of progress and reviews of new books and reports in the area of climate science. The Journal’s main role is to stimulate and report research in climatology, from the expansive fields of the atmospheric, biophysical, engineering and social sciences. Coverage includes:
- Climate system science
- Local to global scale climate observations and modelling
- Seasonal to interannual climate prediction
- Climatic variability and climate change
- Synoptic, dynamic and urban climatology, hydroclimatology, dendroclimatology, ecoclimatology and palaeoclimatology
- Application of climatological knowledge to environmental assessment and management and economic production

Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission (excluding the Americas). Submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) by post to Dr Glenn R. McGregor, School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT, UK.
Submissions from the Americas: submit an electronic version of the manuscript, including tables and illustrations (PDF or Word format preferred), to Dr. Andrew C. Comrie (e-mail: comrie@climate.geog.arizona.edu). If electronic submission is not feasible, submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to Dr. Andrew C. Comrie, Department of Geography and Regional Development, 409 Harvill Building, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721-0076, USA.
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Initial electronic submission. The electronic copy of the initial submission should be e-mailed to the appropriate editor, preferably in PDF format (Word or WordPerfect are also acceptable), and should include embedded graphics and tables where possible.
Final electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be e-mailed or sent to the editor on CD-ROM. Write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect (and TeX or one of its derivatives).
Final illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel and Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, short title of up to 70 characters, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply an abstract of up to 300 words for all articles except book reviews. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to eight keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
The submission of short communications is encouraged. These are papers of less than 3500 words of text with a limited number of figures describing in brief research in progress, new research results and innovative analysis techniques which are fast-tracked through the production and publishing processes.
Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a, Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998)
All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
- Kidson JW. 1997. The utility of surface and upper air data in synoptic climatological specification of surface climatic variables. International Journal of Climatology. 17: 399-413.
- Isaaks EH, Srivaslava RM. 1989. Applied Geostatistics. Oxford University Press: Oxford.
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Supply artwork at the intended size for printing, which must not exceed 215mm x 160mm.
The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be calculated on an individual basis and charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in each volume of the International Journal of Climatology. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
