Instructions to Authors
Growth Factors is a journal dedicated to the communication of significant basic and clinical research on the expression, structure, function and use of growth factors on cells, in animals, and in cancer treatment. The journal is intended to provide rapid publication of research papers, reviews and short communications from protein chemists, molecular biologists, physiologists, cell biologists and clinicians working on the control of cell production and differentiation.
Manuscripts. All submissions will be subject to the normal process of peer review. Manuscripts should be submitted, by either post or fax to one of the editors, or the Editor in Chief, Antony Burgess, Melbourne Tumour Biology Branch, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Melbourne, Vic 3050, Australia. Fax: 61-3-93413104. If submitting by post, please submit three copies of your manuscript, single sided and double spaced, as well as an electronic version on disk (see below). Please include original photographs with each copy of the manuscript. If submitting by fax, ensure that the total number of pages is clearly indicated on the cover sheet. Contributors should note that material submitted to the journal must be original, must not have appeared in another publication and must not be submitted for publication elsewhere while under consideration by Growth Factors.
The preferred order of presentation is: Title Page, Abstract (less than 150 words), Introduction, Methods, Results (and/or) Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Figure Legends and Figures. The Title Page must include the title, authors, institutional affiliations, keywords (up to 6 words or phrases), running title (less than 50 characters) and full correspondence details (street address, telephone, fax and email addresses) of the corresponding author. All pages of the manuscript must be numbered. Manuscripts must be submitted in English. Footnotes should not be used. Non-standard abbreviations should be defined when first used in the manuscript.
Disk submissions. Authors should send the final, revised version of their manuscript in both hard copy (paper) and electronic (disk) forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the Journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5-inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word (PC format), but can translate from most other common word-processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".
Tables and figures. Tables must be typed on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The figure legends to figures should be gathered and typed on a separate sheet. Tables should be numbered by Roman numerals and figures by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the paper. Please supply clear copies of artwork (preferably the originals) for figures in a finished format suitable for reproduction. Photographs intended for halftone reproduction must be good glossy original prints, of maximum contrast. Clearly label each figure with the author's name and figure number, indicating "top" where this is not obvious. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher. The author(s) must arrange permission for the reproduction of illustrations and tables within articles. Figures may be sent electronically, preferably in either TIFF (tagged image format) or EPS (encapsulated Postscript) formats. However, we can also accept PICT or JPEG formats. The publisher will normally reproduce colour figures in black and white.
References. These should be cited in the text with the author's name (et al. may be used for citations with more than two authors) and the year of publication. References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. Examples:
Savage, C.R., Inagami, T. and Cohen, S. (1972) The primary structure of epidermal growth factors. J. Biol. Chem. 247, 7612-7621
Leblond, C.P. and Cheng, H. (1976) Identification of the stem cells in the small intestine of the mouse. In Stem Cells of Renewing Cell Populations, A.B. Cairnie, P.K. Lala and D.G. Osmond, eds. Academic Press, New York, pp.7-31
Unpublished results (including manuscripts in press or submitted) and personal communications should be cited in the body of the manuscript. Personal communications must be authorized by a letter of permission.
Offprints. Fifty offprints and a copy of the journal are supplied free for each article. Additional offprints and copies of the journal may be purchased and should be ordered when the proofs are returned. Offprints are sent by accelerated surface mail soon after publication.
Copyright. It is a condition that authors vest copyright of their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may use their article elsewhere after publication provided that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis Ltd. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
