New Perspectives on Turkey

NEW TO CAMBRIDGE IN 2015

New Perspectives on Turkey (NPT) is a peer-reviewed social science journal published biannually. The aim of the journal is to provide an intellectual platform for scholarly debates and ideas relating to the history, politics, society, economy and culture of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. In addition to research directly concerned with Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, comparative perspectives and theoretical contributions relevant to such research are also actively solicited. The variety of material in the past issues - ranging from Ottoman history to contemporary politics, from sociological inquiries to economic analysis, and from general theoretical concerns to interventions in specific debates - reflects the diversity of the journal’s area of interests. New Perspectives on Turkey publishes articles, book reviews, review articles, commentaries and reports on conferences. Each submission goes through a double blind review process. NPT’s policy is that published articles make original and strong theoretical and/or empirical contributions in their scholarly fields.

Instructions to Authors

Submissions to New Perspectives on Turkey

The following is a brief overview only. For detailed guidance in formatting your manuscript, please refer to the NPT Style Guide for Authors.

Articles should be submitted online here.

NPT publishes articles in English only. Submission of an article implies that it has not been simultaneously submitted or previously published elsewhere. The entire manuscript, including notes, tables and references, must be word processed and submitted electronically. The main text and footnotes should both be double spaced and left aligned (ragged right). The first page of the manuscript should contain: the title, the name(s) and institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s), and an abstract of no more than 200 words. Author contact details and acknowledgments of any sort should be typed as an Author’s Note above the first footnote.

Authors are responsible for acquiring their own image permissions. Digital files of images should be of the maximum size and resolution possible, with a minimum resolution of 200 dpi, and are to be provided as separate files. Graphs and tables are to be provided in a separate, editable document, not as static images. The preferred location of all figures should be indicated in the main text, and a full caption and any source citation / permission provided beneath the location of each figure. All authors should read and follow the Cambridge Artwork Guide, available here.

All non-English words found in an unabridged U.S. English dictionary (i.e., Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary) should be treated as English words. All non-English words and phrases should be in italics on the first instance. All non-Roman alphabets must be transliterated, and authors are responsible for the consistency of their transliterations.

When spelling Turkish words, authors should always use the additional Turkish Latin characters: Â â Ç ç Ğ ğ ı İ î Ö ö Ü ü Ş ş, e.g., Istanbul à İstanbul.

NPT uses both footnotes and a final reference list. The author must provide a complete list of all the published sources (published books and articles) at the end of the manuscript. However, archival material, statutes, newspaper articles, and unpublished theses and lectures, etc., should only be mentioned in the footnotes.

As NPT is a specialist scholarly publication, authors are discouraged from giving courtesy translations of the titles of every work originally published in Turkish or other languages in footnotes and references.

The style of footnote citations and final reference lists should conform with the Notes and Bibliography style detailed in chapter 14 of the 16th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style (sometimes called the Humanities Style). When a work is referenced more than once, for the second and consecutive citations use the author’s last name and a shortened title of the book or article. When references to the same work follow without interruption use Ibid.

The Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide to formatting footnotes and references in the Chicago Notes and Bibliography style is available at the official website of the Chicago Manual of Style (www.chicagomanualofstyle.org)]

English Language Editing Services
Authors, particularly those whose first language is not English, may wish to have their English-language manuscripts checked by a native speaker before submission. This is optional, but may help to ensure that the academic content of the paper is fully understood by the editor and any reviewers. We list a number of third-party services specializing in language editor and/or translation, and suggest that authors contact as appropriate. Click here for more information
